If you had to pick a single innings that marked the turnaround for Indian Test cricket in the 21st century, this would be it. I mean yes there’s Laxman’s 281 and knocks by Dravid and Ganguly’s captaincy and Sehwag’s game changing openings, but this innings was the prototype- it really made the Indians believe that someone other than Sachin was also capable of greatness, that they didn’t have to huddle in his shadow and lose all hope once he got out, that self-belief was also a viable option.
How lower do you want him to be. He mostly played at 5 or 6. Actually, he could have been utilised best if he was given a chance at no.3. He was naturally a very attacking batsman and had almost all the shots. A perfect fit for no.3. Someone like Ponting.
How good a career do you want him to have? 8781 runs in 134 Tests at an average of 46 is a pretty sensational career, particularly given his career is punctuated by a succession of match winning knocks, including multiple match winners against the full power of a dominant Australian side!
This was teaser of what was to come at Kolkata
This innings was a masterpiece. Perhaps one of the greatest knocks ever in a losing cause.

Second Best ever Innings by Indian Batsman in Australia after Sachin 114 at Perth 1992. And also second best knock of Laxman after his 281 at Kolkata
Idiot .. if this is second best knock by indians in tests after sachin's 114, How come this knock be the second best knock by himself ?
@@GaliVivahan He said, "Indian Batsmen in Australia". So no contradiction there.
Childhood memories , next 2001 Kolkata loading 281 😂
