This Might Be How Total War Star Wars Will Play

  • Total War: Star Wars - it's a title I never thought I'd seriously talk about, yet one that fascinates me now that it has become a real possibility. Whether you're excited for the idea or not, one must wonder what such a title would bring to the series, and what Creative Assembly would need to change up in terms of battles, mechanics, and campaigns to represent the Star Wars universe to the best of its ability.

I think the biggest change will occur on the battle map, due to the different ways I assume Star Wars battles are fought compared to the more pre-modern warfare or gunpowder eras of prior Total War games. But what about naval battles? Will they make a grand return, and spawn a revival of naval battles in Total War games? And what will the campaign map look like? I'm kinda skeptical for this one. It could be a great thing or just a meh title.
Personally i'll choose an Empire 2, but if the game is well done could really work.
My only concern is the factions, a friend of mine is a huge fan of SW and not everybody in the galaxy has quite the large army, maybe 4 factions at least (this based on Clone Wars setting which can be Republic, Separatists, Mandalorians & The Hutts)

@@AndysTakethere are also the crime syndicates and neutral factions (one lead by Mandalor). There could be a mechanic to get the support of the mid-rim planets (who follow the lead of Kashyyyk) or play as them and choose a side.
For the separatist and republic, you could play as a certain general :
Grievous, Trench, Poggle the Lesser, ... for the separatist
And the systems armies generals (Kenobi, Mace Windu, Plo Koon?...) for the republic.
That way you have different specialisations at different places on the map.
Then you could have the main republic (Palpatine/senate/jedi council) and separatist (Dooku/separatist senate) factions be a bit like the Emperor in three kingdoms TW.
If there is a transition to the Empire, there should be a choice between the jedi general of the systems army or the army commander (so you choose to continue for or against the empire afterwards).

Better to have a Total War set in Middle Earth.

    • @classical4872
      @classical4872 4 месяца назад +2

If you were not already aware, there is a mod for Medieval 2 called "Divide And Conquer" (currently in its "V5" ) that takes place roughly around the war of the ring in LOTR.
Now, there is also "Third Age Total War" which is the OG LOTR mod for Medieval 2... but it hasn't been updated for over a decade (i think) and thus does not have as much content as one might expect. TATW does have a literal campaign for the war of the ring where you play as the Fellowship itself and get to experience battles from the books/movies such as the battle of the Pelennor fields ( i won't spoil more than that though).TATW only has like 10-15 factions though (ish, i cannot guarantee that there is more than 10)
Meanwhile, Divide and Conquer has a ton of factions (more than 20 at least) , thus also tons of units and to an extent also a bunch of scripted events, such as being able to reform/remake Arnor or the Reunited Kingdom as the Northern Dunedain (a faction in DAC) ... but again, i do not want to spoil too much lol. IMPORTANT: This mod does have a ton of fan made content including a black numenorean faction that starts as a horde around Umbar... so the mod isn't 100% faithful to tolkien canon, but it's still majority canon-friendly. :)
TATW has something similar to this as you can at least form Arnor in that mod (maybe RK too, but idk for sure).
My point with this essay being that a Middle Earth Total War / Total war set in the third age of LOTR/ Middle Earth already exists which is something i doubt even CA could do better than these modders already have.
Now, there is a 4th age mod for Rome 1 ... but i forgot what it's called but i can look it up if you want to know this too (it is basically almost entirely fan-made stuff tho, but with as much as possible from actual Tolkien canon included as far as i know)
In addition, there is a 2nd age mod for Medieval 2 but i haven't seen anything on that one for at least 2-3 years (almost certainly is still up tho).
And finally, there is a 1st age mod currently in development (no properly functional campaign but they do have skirmish more or less set up) which is called 'Silmarillion total war'. I forgot which creator/YTber usually posts skirmish replays on STW but it's something along the lines of 'monster' so if you search 'Silmarillion total war monster' / 'Monster Silmarillion total war' or something like that... you should find him with ease, as he could serve as an introduction to STW to some extent (at least for the unit rosters.
And honorable mention, there are 3 DAC / LOTR mods creators i recommend
      - Ligizd (seemingly borderline retired unfortunately- or something happened IRL, idk. Crap ton of content to watch.)
      - Izzy (basically on break/ quit / retired... one of the three, but there is a crap ton of letsplays from this man.)
      - Augimund (more of a 'i impose restrictions on myself to make a difficult mod even harder' creator but you might enjoy this content aswell)

They will give us historical title and in the same time try key mechanics they want SW:TW operates on (it could make a lot of people happy).
Then they will go with Warhammer 40K to try all the space stuff how does it work with Total War and after that they will know exactly how to model Star Wars Total War.
It has potential to overcame Warhammer I and II.
Side effect of that is that we won't get Medieval III or Early Modern TW any time soon..

We need a dev team thats actually allowed to create a FULL GAME. Not 80% of a video game and then the last 20% is only included in the pre-order. No coming out with DLC 2 months after release that could have been in the base game. No more of this "17% of the entire funding goes into the pockets of ceos that dont do anything"

Surely they'd be combining the FPS stuff they would have been developing with Hyenas with Total War-esque gameplay to create battles where you can actually partake on an individual level?

    A) they already make a game for the specific tastes of a country.
    B) put Alexander plus Genghis khan and Joanne of arc on the same map sounds crazy fun
    C) why not make Aristotle a life wizard? Fate would work just fine with the Warhammer 3 magic system.

I don't like Star Wars, so I won't get it, BUT I respect this if it's a title. Now, I see only one way it could work: if they focused on just one or a few very important planets, maybe divided like the Empire map was between Eurasia and the Americas. That's the only way it could work with the total war formula and, even then, it'll probably have the single-unit and character focuses, which I despise, so eh. Good luck for those that would enjoy it, though.

i think star wars as a concept for TW is awesome/something to look forward to by CA but it also depends.
if star wars gets made by CA then the engine should be so far away, so "alien" from what we are used to in total war games that it shouldn't be even considered a "total war." game, or branded as such and put in the same series as the other total wars.
it should just be branded as a completely different series/game line/franchise, whatever you call it, if the game engine is radically different from what the total war series already is then it should be something other than "total war." and if its not radically different from the total war franchise in terms of engine then it'll already probably fail as a total war and star wars strategy game.
I like to be optimistic for the sake of "possibilities." but I'm also quite cautious and skeptical especially considering from my pov that warhammer 40k would be a better starting off choice for a new engine as there is already quite a melee focus in 40k so its not just "guns gun guns and maybe some lightsabers here n there." (since star wars was not really melee focused in comparison excluding the jedi/sith/mandalorian's whose beskar could compete with lightsabers... if they had beskar that is)

I think those are great news. We shouldn't be so negative about it. Let's think about it this way: CA is literally trying to get out of the failure that was Pharaoh, and they KNOW we want an historical total war, if they just tackled that request, after so many "meh" titles, they could release a terrible game, and we all would be disappointed after waiting so much time for those historical titles. Instead, with this star wars game, they can try new mechanics, ideas and make an experience so they can get feedback and follow a path that makes us comfortable and then release a very good and polished historical title. I personally think this is a better idea so we don't get a bad medieval 3 or empire 2 or any historical title based on Pharaoh mechanics.

I'm unsure how to feel about this, I do enjoy Star Wars but with the current how TW is played I just dont really see how Star Wars can work. I would probably feel better if it was made by CoH dev's or MoW Style of game play with smaller combat groups taking and holding points or in the style of Halo Wars or Empire at War.
I dont know how they will make it feel like TW when there are only a small amount of faction/groups on the campaign map and will they still make it a turn based system/ real time or turn based with all actions taking place at the same time?
There are too many unknowns and differences that Star Wars can bring for TW, Will it feel too different for TW style that we have grown to enjoy? How and If we will get Naval/Space battles?

(I spent at least 20 minutes typing all this and i'm pretty sure that even with grammar-checking etc through it twice i screwed up somewhere but i'm not sure where i did)
There is a mod for Medieval 2 called "Divide And Conquer" (currently in its "V5" ) that takes place roughly around the war of the ring in LOTR.
Now, there is a 4th age mod for Rome 1(it is basically almost entirely fan-made stuff tho, but with as much as possible from actual Tolkien canon included as far as i know). EDIT: 4th age mod: Fourth Age: Total War . There is a youtuber/maybe even dev of the mod called 'Count MRVHS' that i recommend for those interested in this mod.
In addition, there is a 2nd age mod for Medieval 2 but i haven't seen anything on that one for at least 2-3 years- EDIT: 2nd age mod is called "DCI Last Alliance"
And finally, there is a 1st age mod currently in development (no properly functional campaign but they do have skirmish more or less set up) which is called 'Silmarillion total war'. Personally, I feel they should have the era focused on in this Total War be the Old Republic; perhaps High Republic. While the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War eras are what started the whole franchise, there are ALOT of mediums where those stories are the focus, or touched upon. May be time for a new feel.
I would also be happy with starting out in the Clone Wars era, for familiarity, but expanding to other eras as well; Mandalorian Wars, Sith Wars. Could be a nice way for Disney to also start making some things canon again.

I would like to see more combination of space battle with ground battle, it would be probably hard to do both at the same time, but they could use the timer to determine at what time the battleship was able to bombard troops on the ground if the landing was before the space battle was won, like lets say your battleship or carriers lived until certain minute and had certain amount of amunition or fighters in excess, and those can be used in the ground battle :D , probably the most used would be if we talk about Rebels against the Empire, where space battle would be about giving time to the ground forces to complete their capture or task they needed to fulfill

Not a huge fan of the idea tbf.
Essentially a Star Wars Total War will not be a Total War game, but a Star Wars game by the team of Total War.
The IP is actually quite limited in factions (like, 4? max? maybe some additional internal strife mechanics to have emergent factions?) but quite large in territorial scope, a whole Galaxy...
I could envision it being a fleet-focused title, that is a hybrid of WarNo and Ultimate Admiral. i.e. not quite base-building RTS, but assigning land units to ships/fleets and some sort of battlegroup system to assign those units to landing divisions, boarding parties and garrisons. And the companies/battallions of said battlegroups then being controllable in real-time battles.
And there are ideas unconsidered, like with the size of the space ships: a space ship battle can be real-time, but one could also make that the turn-based campaign system where attacks get a choice of combat styles between fighter duels, boarding action or broadside bombardment. 2 of which are Real Time battles with units (fighter duels and boarding).
Something that could be done with 40K too...
If I think positively about it, it basically comes down to how fun and practical it could be to expand the tiers of conflict of this style of game with multiple map-levels: Galaxy (turn-based, fleet movement), Star-System (turn-based, ship movement) and Planet/Ship (real-time, unit movement). Leaning into the idea that Space Going Warships in SW and 40K are the size of continents, rather than just flying aircraft carriers/battle cruisers.
Empire II would be my preference still ;)

They’re only doing this because Star Wars has a big fanbase. Due to CA messing up on a “historical base game” “called Pharaoh” failed launch which costed them a substantial amount of money loss. They are now then having to go find a bigger fanbase to make up for the losses. So a historical game will have to come later in years to come. As this Star Wars will be focused on a 1, 2, 3, and probably even 4th game series. Like what Warhammer is today for them. They’re playing a risky game into creating this/these series. If this is a success for them. They’ll either keep going with the same mechanics for whatever historical game to come. For example… TW TROY with TW Warhammer mechanics

Total War's very idea doesnt fit to any science fiction realm. Total War excells in medieval or ancient or maybe modern, but early modern warfare. I dont see this comming. And Im not really waiting for game that will feel 2d (even if it will pretend being 3d) and will be kind of medieval science fiction... I guess there are already really good games with realistic space warfare, like for example Nebulous... or even older Homeworlds. These games show how it should be done. Homeworld 3 failed by not adding anything interesting to this core and by being boring. So what will Star Wars deliver?
Not to mention that Star Wars universe is bit stupid. If we stick to the lore we have single Xwings annihilating full squadroons of Ties. Or we have Millenium Falcon easily doing whatever Han Solo wants to do no matter how strong enemy is. And we have rebel capital ships known for... well... looking interesting, but not having much sense in any battle. And we have star destroyers or super star destroyers much more powerfull than anything rebel has. Star Wars cant be balanced and remain Star Wars.
