Yo frozen! I just recently found your channel after getting back into Mario kart and love the content. I was wondering how I can get started playing in the competitive scene as I’ve looked for many things but a lot is either outdated and idk how to get in touch with the ppl in this community. Seems very underground. If you know any links or any recommendations I’d really appreciate it
Also do you play on a tv screen or a monitor connected to your computer? If it’s possible to play at my desk or connect it that way somehow it would be easier cus that’s where my whole setup is

One person from each team goes the wrong direction to try to be in last so that they have the best chance of pulling the shock, which is the best item in the game and is even more impactful in team play than it is in solo

They’re called “baggers” and they drive backwards to race for last place so they have the best chance of getting the shock. Due to the point distribution it’s usually just better to forfeit that potential placing to gain control of the shock for your team

everyone votes for the track before the start of every race (he edits it out of the vid), a team decides which track they should all pick based on what spots they’re starting in (most tracks have spots that are beneficial to start in)

I’m not super sure but I think it’s to try and get either a blue shell or a shock to use at the preferred time
It’s for shock basically (you can’t pull a blue in 9 or 10). As you can see they’re racing to be in last, which means you have a higher chance of pulling shock. You can still pull it in 9, but the odds are far lower. Shock is their primary focus since it can be dodged using power items, or by being in a cannon/during respawn with lakitu and it can be used to cancel the effects of a blue or target shock a member of the other team off the track. This is why you hear the bagger (guy running backwards) calling out a bunch like “they might have” or “shockless/nobody has” so the rest of the call can play around that knowledge. As you may have seen/heard too baggers can offer to take thunderclouds at times and deliberately drop a star (like when using a zapper on Koopa Cape) for one of their teammates if they don’t pull shock.
Also shock only becomes available after 30 seconds have passed on the clock, and after its use there is a cooldown of another 30 seconds before it can be obtained again. Finally, on some tracks like Toad’s Factory you can’t drive backwards because of the way the track is laid out. For this reason you’ll see the baggers hanging around the first set almost playing a game of chicken. There’s a lot of strategy that goes into these matches and it’s great to see top tier gameplay from the best team and hear how they communicate too.
If you’re interested in mkw at all you could consider looking up “mkw CTGP” or how to play online just changing the built in connection settings on your Wii. Otherwise, I hope you keep enjoying the MKWii content😃

Really nice races. But why are there always people going the other way around? And also why aren´t you riding the fastest way possible sometimes?
People going back are called baggers. You have a higher chance to get shock in last, so they race for last because shock is so strong. Sometimes he slows down because his team mates are ahead of him, so he's more useful slowing down the other team instead of overtaking his own team.
For a good example of slowing down, on the DS yoshi falls race, you will see a spot where he let's his teamate pass him because he is the one who still has defensive items. Red shells attack the closest player in front of you. So if you and a teamate are 1 and 2, you only really need a defensive item in 2nd. And you can switch back and forth when necessary.
