Bay City Romance is her other best song IMHO. Another fun track similar to this.
Hey man a reaction video I would love to see is kekkai sensen end 1, in my opinion is the best anime end song ever.
Can u react to one last kiss and Beautiful world by Haruka Utada from The Evangelion Anime plsss these songs are soothing to hear 😍
But have you listened to crazy frog
Yes, please react to more Japanese city pop songs. Thank you very much.
The fact that it became so widely recognized years after Miki's death adds an extra emotional value to this great song
It become popular again not because her death. But some youtuber made cover song
@@danurkresnamurti3598 the Indonesian?
@@danurkresnamurti3598 hard to believe since i had never heard of the guy nor his version but I hear this song weekly atleast
@Danur Kresna Murti was listening to it before it came big. I miss the days, when this was still underground.

Rest In Peace.
Even if she regretted spending the time she spent on her career, she truly left a legacy
Yeah, she was dealt such a sad and terrible hand. If you knew you only had 39-40 good years to live and another 4-5 of chemo, I think most people would choose spending it with family.
@@Parker-- yeah its sooooo sad, cancer fuckin sucks
she loved music. no way she regretted it. might have been reggretting it one month one year, but no way she regretted it for lifetime.
@@lunascomments3024 It's like her famous last public words. She loved music, no one doubts that, but if she had known she had such little time, she wouldn't have focused so much on her career and spent time with family. And her career isn't the same as her music btw.
@@Parker-- wdym her career isnt the same as her music
This song was released 44 years ago…unbelievable!
So this song released in February 1979? Wow that's crazyyy..

Holy shit that's crazy this would be a hit in any radio station today

You should definitely give Mariya Takeuchi's Plastic Love a listen sometime. It's one of City Pop's GOATS imo.
Agreed. Plastic Love was how I found this and a few other City Pop tracks.
I came to make the same comment HAHA

Agree! more City Pop. Plastic Love is my favorite too.
personally like friday night plans version more but i agree! such a beautiful classic
No matter who you are, where you are, of what you doing, when the 'STAY WITH MEEEEE' drops, YOU SING.

I dont
even the auto caption does the "stay with me" lmao
Man I could be in a court room and still would sing this if it was to somehow came on
Miki's debut single (1979), when she was 19 years old. It reached #28 on the Oricon Weekly Chart. Tetsuji HAYASHI, who composed and arranged the music, also worked on Mariya TAKEUCHI's "SEPTEMBER" around this time and composed many hit songs after this. Yoshiko MIURA, who wrote the lyrics, also has many hit songs.
Studio musicians who colored numerous City-Pop and J-Pop numbers, such as Tsugutoshi GOTŌ (ex-Sadistic Mika Band) on bass, Tatsuo HAYASHI (ex-Caramel Mama/Tin Pan Alley) on drums, Masaki MATSUBARA (PARACHUTE) on guitar, participated in the recording sessions.
U can feel the Harry Hosono "PACIFIC" album (1978) inspiration.
I'm half Japanese, this is my moms favorite song! Its been in her kareoke repitoire for years! I'm so happy to hear you enjoying all the details of the song
It sounds very Americanized. A lot of the beats are American
Love from India. Love this song. So happy to listen to this legendary song
Its absolutely insane how much fun this song is during night driving! City Pop is strong lol Thanks for checking this out and fantastic request, Caleb!
So true, just had this pop up in my watchlist as I was driving home from work, the ambience & feel of this song is perfect for Night driving.

You can feel her emotions. You almost get a glimpse into her life. I cannot hear this song and not tear up. It's real. It's human. It's raw emotion we don't see in our increasingly nihilistic society.
Miki's voice at 8:53 pierces my heart. It's best in the live concert version.
I remember not liking this song/genre the first time I heard it, and last year I came across this song again (after a few months of watching your channel and learning about music) and now I love this, it's just so different the way I listen to music now, thanks man
That'd a fun comment to read
The thing is if Miki was alive and saw westerners saw her love her music she would be so happy. Luckily people like Mariya are alive to see her and be surprised her music being enjoyed.
lol
I don’t know if she would like that considering her last wish before her death was that hoped that nobody would listen to her music anymore.
@@renoahspringsbut the reason is because she felt it wasnt worth, if she saw how massivively her song went viral, even if she still regreted not focusing on family, i think it would make her burden easier
i`m agree with you tho to be honest
Not just Westerners, if you can believe it
Definitely the perfect song. God please let her soul be with you
This is a classic. Yes, it shows it's age, but it shows how age is like a fine wine.
Underrated comment.
Japan in the '80s was a VIBE. Wouldn't mind seeing more City Pop from you! Plastic Love is the obvious choice.
It's a little funny how much of the music on this channel is Japanese. But, it's fair, Japan overall has one of the strongest music scenes on the planet in my opinion.
I agree with you 👍
im japanese thanks
Its all the anime fans
If you like piano/jazz check Ryo Fukui
@@crafter505 Harry styles is also a anime fan? Lmao you salty brother? Harry styles new album is inspired by a Japanese 1970s pop. There are a lot of western legendary singers ( old ones) that respect and admire Japanese music. There were times when korea and some other countries copied Japanese music ( well it's basically regarded as an inspiration) it has 2nd biggest music industry brother what are you saying ,all the anime fans . Get out of that shitty mindset thinking that anime is for kids . The recent creed 3 movie has a lot of anime reference, matrix is heavily influenced by Ghost in the shell, Black swan Oscar film literally copy pasted a scene from perfect blue , inspection took some inspiration from paprika.there is a long list .
The guitar part at the end really adds so much to this song. It's not overly flashy or complicated, just groovy melody.
Proves a song doesn’t have to be very complex to be good and an absolute jammer
Tetsuji Hayashi, who composed Miki Matsubara 's " Midnight Door - Stay With Me (1979)",
was a Japanese composer, arranger, and singer-songwriter.
He made his debut as a singer-songwriter in April 1973,
He composed and arranged an astonishing number of hit songs in Japan in the 80's and 90's.
He was one of the most famous hit makers of J pop songs in the 80's.
Perhaps it would be easier to understand him as the Japanese version of David Foster.
His following songs are representative works, all of which were big hits that were well-known to all Japanese at that time.
(Tetsuji Hayashi's compositions.)
“Midnight Door - Stay With Me" for Miki Matsubara
For Anri "I Can't Stop the Loneliness ", "YOU ARE NOT ALONE"
For Mariya Takeuchi’s "SEPTEMBER”
Masaki Ueda "Sea looks like sad colors (Kanashii Iro yane).",
For Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe
“SUMMER SUSPICION”, “Your Heart is Marine Blue”, “RIVERSIDE HOTEL”
“A Summer Tale of Two of Us-Never Ending Summer”-, “Full of Silence”
"North Wing" for Akina Nakamori
"Love Story (Aijo Monogatari)”,"The Closest Island to Heaven" for Tomoyo Harada
Momoko Kikuchi "Graduation”and others
For Junichi Inagaki "A Dozen Excuses," "MARIA," "Can't Talk About It”
For Junko Ohashi."Rainy Saturday & Coffee Break","White Requiem”,"Last Number""Embraced by Fog"
For Hatsumi Shibata ”My Luxury Night (arr.)”

JAJAJA same for me. the best to start your day on trafic going to see burned people at work.
Idk but for me this is a vibe after work. When you're tired and just wanna relax.
HELL YEAH, city pop on this channel!!! A perfect genre, would be also so cool to see Tony listen to more artists like Kingo Hamada or Taeko Ohnuki 👀 They are all amazing
bohemian by ohnuki is fire
I really love 4:00 AM that's really cool. and u should also listen to i can't stop the loneliness by anri
What a lovely woman and song !! This song is a solid gold.. will live forever !!
i always miss my non existent Japanese 80s memories after listening to this
Miki Matsubara also did the first opening for Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory. The song is called The Winner.
i swear to god the sax is giving me life in this one.... i miss this instrument in music nowadays!
What do you mean you miss it? There are a lot of bands still using it, even in japan
if you're into 80s hardcore punk, you gotta check out xray spex. definitely a favorite from that period of punk.
Tatsuro yamashita is known as the king of japanese city pop, i really recommend you listen to his songs. they're incredible, all of them.
RIP Miki .Her beautiful voice lasts forever.
Good introductory song for the genre of Japanese 80's city pop. The 3 holy grail of new listeners to city pop, Plastic Love, Stay with Me, 4:00 am.
I would recommend listening to Telephone Number by Junko Ohashi or Love Space by Tatsuro Yamashita. Hell, even TheWeekend sampled Midnight Pretenders for a song in their recent album.
この曲本当に良いよね。
数年前にたまたま聴いたら一気に引き込まれて一時期には毎日聴いていた。
100% best music break downs first person I can personally not get upset with when they pause and go back.
Rest in peace miki matsubara, even though you regreted your work, you created some of the most beautiful songs to ever exist in this world
Playing this in a loop everyday while driving home. Goosebumps!!
I bet
THIS SONG WAS WAY AHEAD OF ITS TIME!
Woah, was not expecting peak but here we are.
ok, you are the man! So glad to see you bringing in some City Pop! Some really good ones to check out, Plastic Love by Mariya Takeyuchi, Midnight Pretenders by Tomoko Aran, Magic Ways by Tatsuro Yamashita, Say Goodbye by Hiroshi Sato, man, the list goes on! lol Stay With me is a great place to start!
Awesome suggestions! I'd love to see him react to Say Goodbye!
Bay City Junko Yagami also slaps
I really suggest hearing more of her music. She really had an amazing way of singing.
I heard this song like 2 years ago. This song is an 80's City Pop banger. About 9 months ago, I heard somebody blasting this song in their car as they went down my street. I was like, Hell Yeah! I was shocked someone else in the entire midwest had heard the song, much less bumpin' down my street.
I'm play this song in my Mitsubishi Mirage 1990 model, you feel the retro vibe😎
Rest in peace miki.... We miss you
This is one of those that you can't listen to without a huge smile on your face. There is something about 70s/80s Japanese music that is so nostalgic and chil that i can't describe. I know many others have mentioned Mariya Takeuchi and other great artists but i will say, if you wanna travel to a happy place aurally listen to Takanaka Masayoshi, you will not be disappointed.
Absolutely phenomenal song! So sad I experienced it only after her death. RIP, legend.
I first listened to this music a few months ago and fell in love with it right away, but when I found out that Miki Matsubara died years ago, I burst into tears. This music touched my heart deeply. 😢❤
Miki Mastsubara, Yoko Takahashi and Tomiki Van are some of my oldest singers in my library and all of them have such amazing songs and voices. All have such a unique old cool vibe to them. It's sad to see Miki Mastsubara pass back in 2004 but her legacy lives on in her music.
Music never dies and I bet these songs continue to find the next generation in one way or another.
This was released in 1979. I got this record 45years ago. Time flies, indeed. R.I.P.
Everything by Miki Matsubara is perfect. I'm a new fan
Oh boy …. Let the journey into CITYPOP begin lads!!!
Through this reaction I noticed about 15 different elements that I never bothered to notice before. So cool.
Love 80's City Pop. Being able to understand what they are singing about to a degree helps, but even if you can't understand it, I feel like you can easily vibe to it.
This song always gives me that emotion. RIP Miki ❤
Literally listened to this song this morning on a run. It's one of my favorites.
I was born 1991 and I listen to this kid of music from Japan. Its so relaxing and just make you reminisce a lot of things while listening to it.
this is the reaction i've been looking for. admiring how the song was produced.
you can't hate this song it's that simple it's just art perfected
Songs like this release my soul to the heaven.
Been listening to the song for years. Makes my heart happy and more people are finding it now
This song never fails to cheer me up
That octave shift on vocals at the end just brings it all together!
I enjoy the slowly smile you made when the saxophone started playing. Great reactions as always
city pop can never grow old. loving her voice
Thank you for this Tony! You made me notice things about this song that I would've never appreciated!
This song makes me tear up knowing Miki, we miss you!
Literally one of my top 3 songs, man I love your videos literally not a single bad vid AT ALL AHHH
4.00am and tasogare are also absolute bangers
the intro to this song sounds magical, and ethereal, something no song has ever given me.
Been a massive fan of this obscure gem for a couple years
First time hearing this song, and I'm instantly in love with it.
Japanese City Pop is absolutely addicting. Gotta check out Dress Down by Kaoru Akimoto, that's another must play
She did not need vocal ai work, she is natural.
Japanese City Pop is just amazing.
Its the perfect for Night runs/ or a Night drive around the City.
Tune the worries out and let the Tune carry your feets.
Her life story is pretty sad. R.I.P.
japanese music is really amazing, 太好听了!

Now this is a masterpiece!
Aaah, man. It's bittersweet hearing this one. The world lost something very special when Miki Matsubara took her leave of us.
This song always gets me so emotional.
Bay City is a banger aswell. Telephone number by Yunko Ohashi is also one of my favourite songs.
Add to that Plastic Love by Marya Tekeuchi, Flyday Chinatown by Yasuha, Ride on Time by Tatsuro Yamashita, 4:00am by Taeko Onuki, Watashitachi o Shinjite Ite by Cindy and so many more. Such good songs and great vibes 😁
This recording is a work of genius all the way around. It gives an ascending emotional reaction in me, it makes me feel that happiness is possible after all. Yet punctuated by the heartbreak of knowing she is gone.
True one of the best song , it's truly Timeless.
City pop is an untapped gem of a genre! Tatsuro yamashita and Toshiki kadomatsu are two standout artists to check out
Even if she kills me after staying... Even if I stay to get nightmares or whatever... she sings like that, I´m staying. this is one of my favorite songs discovered randomly with youtube´s help only a few years ago, another era, impossible for me but I just dream it would be a blast to listen to her live singing, rest in peace!
the bass is a bomb
one of my favourite songs of all time, glad you reacted tot his Tony, love the content bro
The bass in this song is CRAZY good, one of my favourite bass lines ever.
Tugutoshi Goto is one of the best.
Holy crap this is one of my favorite city pop songs and artist. This channel is goated man.
Her soul was too beautiful to have the end it did
I feel like the more we learn and become older the more we appreciate bass players
Such a warmth and beautiful melody. I feel it so beautiful yet so sad. Music is so wonderful!
This is a masterpiece 🔥
In 1979, YMO was popular in Japan, so this song was not very popular, but it is strange to think that many people around the world are listening to it after her death.
You can thank early 2000s/late 1990s anime, a lot had city pop soundtracks.
Díos te guarde en la gloria Matsubara Miki
I heard this song for the first time in a bar in Seoul & honestly though it was black 70s/80s soul until after the first line! They really pulled off that sound, I love this track!!
Thank you Caleb
I think we need more city pop reactions it's just so underrated.
Bro looks like a gigachad in the thumbnail. (And his commentary on this song proves it)
Gigachad lmao
I can't get over how perfectly you put words to such a feeling-based thing such as instrument tone and quality, things that I could never feel satisfied trying to describe you somehow put into words perfectly
Ms. Matsubara has such a unique and noticeable voice. I don't speak Japanese, but I can always tell if it's Miki who is singing. This was a really in-depth and good reaction. 👍
Yayy some japanese city pop! I would recommend "Plastic love" by Mariya Takeuchi if you want to hear more similar stuff
