My boys were in high school band. They graduated last year. High school bands are mostly corps and extremely artistic. It tells a story through the performance. They are HIGHLY competitive. This is a BOA (Bands of America) competition. There are area, state and grand national BOA competitions every year. On top of that there is UIL (University Interscholastic League) regional and state competitions. Our band is one of the top in the state of Texas. Our school district swept UIL in 2016 - we took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place at UIL state competition that year. Our band starts with athletics/fitness (and zumba) about a month prior to the beginning of the school year. They stretch, exercise and practice (learn music/routines) for 6-7 hours a day during that time - it's called band camp. Once school starts they practice 2-4 hours a day outside of school class time 3 days a week. They perform at football games on Fridays. Most Saturdays are full day competitions. The Saturdays that aren't competition they sometimes practice. High school drum majors do not march. They are on elevated platforms so the band can see them. There are 4 to 5 drum majors. The flags are collectively called the drill team - they are not band members but compete with the band. Every high school has one. Our band has their own diesel trailer for hauling all the equipment - instruments. The last year my kids were in band the budget for the band was 1 million dollars. Each student in our band had yearly fees which were probably part of that budget - then there are corporate & private donors. I was in high school band in the 80's. We were a military style band. Our drill team consisted of flags and rifles and they were band members. We had an instrument truck about the size of a small uhaul moving truck. High school band is highly competitive though on a different level than college bands.
@@journeyto100channel2 Illinois marching bands are really good too. For example our school never went to nationals but we always were rivals with Marion cathlic and they literally just won nationals at the 2a division lol. Our school just didn't have the budget to go to nationals since our Jazz band and wind symphony took most of the budget.
I’m a former judge and I can’t stop watching PENstriped!! The technique of the brass and winds are so amazing, no one can touch them. The guard was written well. I wish the rifles were a bit more trained so they could be a more solid. There was only one change I disagreed with. At the end, some guard came out at the end with Blue or White banners at the end of the show. I know it’s probably adding school colors (even though they are Blue and Black,) but it added no effect for such a short duration, it drew they eyes away from the whole. Other than that, it’s the most rounded show I’ve ever seen from a HS. There is no doubt that you would have won Grand Nationals if it was your year to go. I hope next years show is equally as outstanding as this year.
Hebron Pinstriped was amazing! I knew once I saw it that you were going today win BOA San Antonio. And that you most likely understood how it feels to think you could've won.,or at least been a contender. ANYWAY! REAGAN SECRET WORLD better than Hebron Pinstriped 😋 nice try
Rereading this, hate how ugly I sound. Here's the thing, clearly I am a big time Reagan supporter (not participant). I wouldn't go on a RUclips video of Hebron's Penstriped performance and comment "you think that's good, you should check out Reagan's Secret World!" Mind you these shows are 2 years apart Reagan 2019 and Hebron 2021. I guess I take issue with the fact that the comment right away suggests watching another show, without any positive or congratulatory comments on how wonderful of a show Reagan"s Secret World was. I got some dirty looks from Regan band parents last year when I was congratulating Hebron band kids on their amazing performance. Our actual Reagan Band kids absolutely loved Hebron's performance and we're happy that they won. Not one Reagan kid said, "oh you should check out our 2019 performance!" Just sayin. Can't we all share in the love and good feelings and kudos, ESPECIALLY when we didn't even compete directly against one another!!
My brother was in this. This particular school is highly competitive in all of their music and fine arts programs. One interesting thing about this program in particular is that they have strong relationships with the other departments in that school so the dance team is part of the color guard (which is part of why that section is so large and they can do some really cool effects with it) and in previous years the choir has also been involved. They only practice their shows for about 8 hours a week during the school year and yet they're one of the top high school marching bands in the country. Their choir that same year decided to go to Italy for a choir competition, just kinda said "hey who wants to go" from within their choir, practiced for like two weeks before they left, and ended up winning the whole competition. Texas music programs are no joke. They are competitive beyond belief while doing, in some people's eyes outside of Texas, less "time" to work on it....but in reality those bands/choirs have gotten their practice time so efficient they don't need 40 hour practice weeks to be good. Glad you enjoyed!!!
the UIL 8 hour rule makes it so that all bands in texas are only allowed 8 hours of rehearsal a week. very interesting that their dance team is part of the guard tho, i didn’t know that!
@@kentish624 8 hours of rehearsal *outside of the classroom day*. This is important to mention, because there are many schools across the country/world where band ONLY meets before or after school....while other schools practice close to 8 hours per week DURING the classroom day (1 1/2 hours per day during class, 5 days per week). Most of the bands that are nationally ranked are able to practice BOTH during the classroom day AND before/after school. Japan doesn't consider Band to be a part of their national curricula, so Japanese kids will study music history, sing, play recorder or melodica and other general music concepts during their music classes during the classroom day, but will do band, choir or orchestra after school as a part of "club activities". So Japan ONLY practices before/after school. A crazy thought, considering their bands are among the best in the world.
The group of instruments next to the field are called "The Pit". Usually, a pit section includes instruments like the marimba, the xylophone, the vibraphone, the tympani, bells, chimes, etc. I marched in marching band in 8th grade and then all four years of high school in Texas and I don't think I knew what a pit section was called until I got into college, because I don't think my high school band ever had a pit section except maybe in my senior year of high school.

Wheeling highschool marching band. We weren't the biggest school but we won everything we went to to the point that they gave away the trophies. The group on the sideline is called "The Pit" it is full of percussionists (people who play with sticks and mallets and such) that play instruments that can't be marched like a drum set, a xylophone, a gong, etc. There are also pieces of tech down there for the woodwind soloists who can't play loud enough to be heard on their own (like the bass clarinet duet at 3:20 ). This is because most woodwinds have a limit to their sound without literally blowing up the instrument, unlike brass instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone, etc.).
