Nice to see a new Pixhawk/Mission Planner series. Will give me a chance to see what's changed since I last done an Arducopter build. But nice to see the compass procedure working without issues. I remember that could be a headache in the past, with things like the flight controller refusing to disable the internal compass, leading to compass variance errors, even though you had told it to only use one compass. That normally meant a trip into the full parameter list to knock the internal compass on the head from there. So nice to see it all working nicely from the compass set up page. I have a 5kg hexocopter that is still running on an old Pixhawk clone that must be 5 years old now, and no doubt still running a 4 year old firmware version. It's always flown beautifully. I thought about upgrading the flight controller, but it's quite a complex built that uses all 16 radio channels, so am a little reluctant to tear it apart whilst all is well.
Thank you so much! I am not sure how I would have navigated through all this without your help. Also doing the Holybro copter with Pixelhawk 6c and using a Taranus +plus. Your step by steps really help me to understand the process and get through it. Actually have had to go back through it multiple times to get it right which is the whole point of learning. Cheers.
I’m loving this series as I’m getting ready to start my first Arducopter build. Question: for Ardupilot do you prefer SBUS or have you accepted the quirks of ELRS and use that?
See the video from the weekend on mLRS. It depends on what you want from your R/C link, if you can handle limted telemetry range and some of the 'quirks' like CH5 still controlling the system, then ExpressLRS is becoming the defauly choice for huge parts of the hobby...
I really appreciate all that you do for this hobby. Thanks for another informative video. I started with Ardupilot back in the 3D Robotics days. In fact, I live only about 15 minutes from where their offices were in San Diego, CA. I've been away from the hobby for a few years now, but want to get back in, and I have several of the older Pixhawk 2.4.8 clone units lying around. Can they still be used with today's versions of Ardupilot and firmware?
I've been building/flying for decades and while I like building, I hate programming. Currently cheating and using a slightly modified Inspire and Litchi to do remote weather balloon retrievals but it's barely adequate at a mile out and plagued by the typical hard-coded restrictions. Had to forgo the retrieval of a package on the side of a mountain recently because it's above the 500 m limit. Not sure the Inspire would have had the battery for the mission anyway. Last recovery the battery overheated and I barely made it back. Started a big custom retrieval quad a few years ago but got stuck because of the lack of decent and reasonably priced digital video systems. Now that a few are out there, I'm continuing the build. Finding your video series was perfect because I'd much rather follow your steps than trial and error them on my own. I have a couple of big hex's but find them very inefficient for long-range remote retrievals. This build will be a Tarot 680 with either 5008 or 5010 motors at around 300kv and 18" props. Thank you for making the series!
great lee, waited a while for this video. i have started my build with an s500 frame, could'nt get a pixhawk 4 so got the 6c but soldered up my motors, esc's & signal wire onto a holybro pm07 power management board. wasn't sure about where to connect my x8r receiver, now i see on sbus with the correct lead. looking forward to next video. regards steve reed.
Just discovered this channel, and thanks so much for all the videos, theyre so useful! :) Do you have any recomendations for an affordable flight controller to run ardupilot for autonomous missions, or maybe somewhere to get them second hand?

Very cool video and list, as always... A request, please: if you don't have it yet (I couldn't find it), would you find interesting to do the same with PX4 and QGroundControl?
I've not had much luck with those for newer pilots and builders, and all of the professional pilots I know use Mission Planner and Ardupilot too... Happy flying
Hi, great video. I follow many of your tutorial when I stuck somewhere. I was wondering do you keep all these flight controller or sell them? because if you are I am intersteting in buying.
Great video, all your content is top quality! I just started my first build. I am using a pixhawk 6c and a radiomaster xt12 (EdgeTX - ELRS) transmitter with a rp1 receiver. Is there a way to connect the rp1 receiver to the Flight controller? If not, can I bind the Frsky x8R with my current xt12 transmitter? How do I connect them? What do you recommend me to do? Any tips or resources would be of great help. Thanks!
Connection from the receiver to the flight controller is easiest with SBUS (as shown). Depending on the firmware on the TX12 and X8R, they should be able to talk together. See my video on binding multi-protocol radios. Best of luck!
Hi Lee , I got a question I’m struggling to understand : right hand side on your transmitter you got ch1 and ch2 ( forward / backwards and pitch left/ pitch right ) now you said you reversed ch 2 - push up ( moving forward) goes down and push down ( moving backwards) goes up - why ? Sorry to annoy you Lee ,just trying to understand it 👍 Everything else I’m ready to do it myself thx to your amazing videos 👍🦅🦅
Lee, may I ask why did you reverse the pitch elevator stick.? Is that because when you move the pitch elev up, copter goes back relative to the pilot and vice versa?
Hi Lee, very useful series! I am facing an issue with the mag calibration where the green bar fills up and just goes to zero again. It keeps doing that forever. Any solution for that? (I did try pressing accept at near 99% but still didn’t work) 15:23
I am thinking of upgrading my radio. It looks like the current version of the Radiomaster TX16S radio is the TX16S Mark II. There are two versions of the radio, ELRS and 4-in-1, which version do you recommend?
If you have lots of older receivers that you want to bind to the radio, then go for the 4-in-1. If you don't have a lot of legacy receivers, then I would go for ELRS. I hope that helps...
That does help, thank you. I am planning to use a receiver like the FrSky X8R telemetry receiver and install Lua Scripts on the radio to monitor the quad.
Great video! I followed the instructions carefully, but I’m running into an issue. I am setting mine up in a rover. I can see the values move when I use the joysticks in the radio calibration and once that is complete, I plug in the servo and ESC into the PWM out that is plugged into the FMU out but I get nothing out of the servo and motor. Any ideas?
Always great to see these videos coming together! I am part of the px4 dev team and it would be greatly appreciated if you would also be interested in trying out PX4 :)
Should I calibrate the accelerometer and also do calibrate level (below acceloremter calibration) while the Pixhawk is mounted in the drone since my drone surface is not flat?
hey this series is awesome! quick question-how do you supply power at first to the x8R receiver? I'm trying to run through the setup but can't figure out from any video how to solve this issue. is there a read-made part you can link me to? I'd like to try to avoid any soldering of wires if i can. Thanks in advance, and keep up the amazing work! :) p.s Can I calibrate the compass & GPS without dealing with the radio? I'm trying to setup an x9D but would like to at least move on and calibrate other parts of the pixhawk until I solve the above receiver issue...
I believe you set switch six to be mode. In mission planner, there can be six modes, but you set the mode to a three position switch? I suppose you only used the first and last mode, so I think I understand. What switch would you use if you did want to use all six modes?
A three position switch will select modes 1, 4 and 6. Using a six position switch if you want more.. More detail in the other videos in the series. Best of luck
Hello sir, I need to collect some telemetry data from drone ( data logging from pixhawk using sd card and sd card reader. Can you make a video please) I am interested to collect load current, voltage, position, orientation and control inputs
hey the setup was all going completely smooth until I entered the flight modes tab. None of the 6 fields have any info in the drop down menus. The servo output menu tabs are also completely blank. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Thanks!
Hello Painless...been following you for years, went to racing and now want to try a pix again, I want to use one of my racer quads to do a mission and have it dedicated to mission planning only. #1 I need it to be small enough to fit inside the average airframe...I can prob remove a couple stand offs to get some extra room as I wont be planning on crashing it daily.. Is there any smaller FC you recommend? removing the standoffs in a SpeedyBee Master 5 to get about 40mmx75mm free for a FC... but what about ESC, i have 4in1s would they work with a Pix/AMP style? this would be a fun project for your channel for us guys with all this extra hardware laying around :)
Also look at INAV. Basic missions are there too, and most cheap flight controllers are supported. Ardupilot also now supports many non 'pixhawk' flight controllers too. See my builds... best of luck
Nice video. Recently I purchased one Pixhawk6C. I am not able to power the servos for my plane even I used BEC. Any configuration in ardupilot? Any one did this.
Make sure the PWM output is plugged into the PWM connector on the right, the outputs are configured in Ardupilot and the servos have 5v via the ESC BEC... Best of luck
Sorry to bother I watched your video about the Pixhawk 6c I wonder if Pixhawk 6c has Pimavlink support so I can get data from available sensors because I need them for my project. Thanks
Pymavlink doesn’t seems to be directly related to the hardware itself. It seems to be a MAVLink message processing library and both PX4 and Ardupilot uses MAVLink to communicate with ground stations. So their Pixhawk 6C support both PX4 and Ardupilot, which uses MAVLink Protocol.
Hi Phil, Have you run the Pixhwak 6C with Luna script on your radio. Wanting to test. As trying to run pixhawk 6 C on tx16s with inav luna script and got lots of sensors but not 0420 or the tilt, yaw. Works on mission planner.
Hi Phil, Sorry for the late reply. I am using Flying Dutchman V2.8.0 on the tx16s with Iuacc LUA 2.2.0, as using jumper R8 D16 I had to set the protcol to 4 for frsky, not 10 like the video, as would not get telemtry when set to 10 Regards Dave.
Hi Lee , I was ready to apply all your knowledge and I stumbled across a problem - I have a Flysky FS I6x transmitter and receiver , I set them up nicely and i couldn’t not connect the transmitter with the receiver despite the fact they are bound and I had them working yesterday and I even calibrated the transmitter ,I stopped because I encounter some of the problems you suggested it might happened so today I fixed those but I couldn’t get the Tr to connect with the Rc. Any help or suggestions will be highly appreciated. By the way I created an Sbus cable for the receiver to connect it to the Orange cube plus Fc by myself .
@@Painless360 that’s exactly what I want to find out , I had the connection on ardupilot where I have done the radio calibration but I couldn’t turn on the drone ,I had that issue with the throttle as you said , so I came in the house to watch your video to see what I need to do , after that I didn’t go back again until today , I was so hopeful today I plugged in everything again and I couldn’t get it to work … no idea . I read something in ardupilot about changing some parameters , I guess back to the study board .
@@Painless360 it seems to me nobody has used a Flysky Fs I6x to connect to an Orangecube plus flight controller, how to ,what cables and what protocols need to be enabled on ardupilot .This is a beginner Remote controller.
I can't know what you changed so very tricky to help. FlySky isn't something I use here as it uses proprietary protocols that can cause new builders to get caught out, like this. The good news is that you got it working once so I'd start from scratch again and follow the same tutorials as last time. Best of luck!
Hi painless, i want ask a about my problem. So i cant arm my quadcipter because there is a massage "prearm: battery 1 below minimum arming capacity" do you know how to solve it. Thank you
@@Painless360 thank you very much, it works. But i have another problem. My mission planner is already clear, but my motor wont spin even though it said success. Can you help me again ?
I just armed my quad this morning! I'm almost there. Got a weird thing happening though-my throttle is engaged when moving the left stick left/right instead of up/down. I tried rewatching your video to see where i might have been going wrong but I wasn't sure. I can vary the throttle level as is but having to control it left/right instead of up/down is just not intuitive. Any idea what I can do?
Sounds like the channel map is wrong in Betaflight or you have the channel order mixed up on the radio. You could have also missed other critical steps so check out my Quadcopter building for beginners series... Best of luck
Hello I have pixhawk 6c I use every step you talk about in the video When the time to try to fly the copter Won’t fly but fly sideways I don’t know what I am doing wrong Can you help out
When I do my compass calibration the orientation of the external compass doesn't let me select "none" from the dropdown and seems to default to "Yaw270", but I just installed the new firmware and calibrated the accelerometer. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this. Great videos and look forward to hearing from you! :)
Hello pilots. Please help me with the initial settings for the 680mm frame on Pixhawk 2.4.8. Motors 5010.360KV. 15" propellers. The copter always stalls during takeoff. The parameters are stock. The battery is 6S. All motors and ESC are tested. Please advise where to start (at least for the HOVER mode)
How to use pixhawk with celf centering stick? My throttle goes to 50% automatically... I tried to change the pilot_thr_bhv to 7 still it didn't help me. Please help me Thank
Hello, Sir Your videos are very helpful. Unfortunately I have a problem which I don't understand how to solve. I have pixhawk 6c, radiomaster tx12 elrs and RP3 receiver. So binding is fine, telemetry is on the transmiter, also transmitter calibration is fine on ardupilot. But I can't make ESC calibration with my TX 12, it looks it not see it at all, but it not make sense because I get all the telemetry.
Check that all of the controls move in the radio screen and that you've calibrated. If they don't then see the post in the community page (www.youtube.com/@Painless360/community) about checking model match numbers..
and also in the device manager, the comport is not showing the Pixhawk name or any other info. it simply shows two additional com ports but it can not be connecting anymore with the Mission Planner, If you please give me any suggestions, I will be very grateful 🙂
I'd try another USB cable and delete and reinstall the latest Mission Planner onto the PC as covered in the video. One USB port should be for the FC. The other is for pass thru to CANBus.. Best of luck!
hi newbie here, I have a problem where my pixhawk is always yawing (clockwise) when about to takeoff, when I checked the servo output (dshot600) motor 1 and 2 have higher value pwm value than motor 3&4 when throttling up slowly, I use pixhawk 2.4.8 with m8n (gps & compass) and a hereflow
@@Painless360 Thankyou for your response, I did check the motor direction using the abcd test and all spins correctly, the output of motor 1 and 2 is 400pwm difference with motor 3 and 4, I think it's a hardware or sensor issue but I don't know how to check it
Sounds like you need to calibrate the ESCs as I'm guessing you're not using DShot.. I'd strongly recommend watching the entire series..... best of luck
on the compass selection i only see 1 priority i dont see the 2nd one. i when to config and only change : compass_external2 - 1 , compass_learn-1, compass_autodec-1. i then go back to compass selection and it still only has 1 priority and it now check mark on the external option. but when i go to data and move the gps i doesnt move .... what should i be checking or doing ...
Mission Planner will show the compasses it on knows about. If a flight controller doesn't have one internally then you'll only see the external one in the GPS... Best of luck

What troubleshooting have you done already? Making sure the power module is connected to POWER1 on the flight controller is important. See my build videos or the forums for common causes of the error. Best of luck
It is an optional extension to mission planner. See www.unmannedairspace.info/uncategorized/altitude-angel-extends-mission-planner-control-system-new-airspace-safety-tool/
Thanks for that. I just hope I can disable the thing. I didn’t ask for it! Will get my flight controller today so I’ll see. Thanks for all the great videos and advice.

Always great to see these videos coming together! I am part of the px4 dev team and it would be greatly appreciated if you would also be interested in trying out PX4 :)
I have in the past. Happy to revisit again and make content with some backup from the devs... Happy flying
Awesome! Please feel free to reach out in case you need anything :) Would be more than happy to help!
Don’t forget to send him the latest and greatest hardware. I bet he has boxes of sweet gear people beg him to demo
Should I calibrate the accelerometer and also do calibrate level (below acceloremter calibration) while the Pixhawk is mounted in the drone since my drone surface is not flat?
I calibrate the FC on the bench then use autolevel in the plane.
hey this series is awesome! quick question-how do you supply power at first to the x8R receiver? I'm trying to run through the setup but can't figure out from any video how to solve this issue. is there a read-made part you can link me to? I'd like to try to avoid any soldering of wires if i can. Thanks in advance, and keep up the amazing work! :)
p.s
Can I calibrate the compass & GPS without dealing with the radio? I'm trying to setup an x9D but would like to at least move on and calibrate other parts of the pixhawk until I solve the above receiver issue...
You can power it from the Pixhawk when its connected via USB. Best of luck
@@Painless360 Ah ha! Just found the proper JST bundled with the pixhawk! Thanks again :)
Can you make a video please)
I am interested to collect load current, voltage, position, orientation and control inputs
hey the setup was all going completely smooth until I entered the flight modes tab. None of the 6 fields have any info in the drop down menus. The servo output menu tabs are also completely blank. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Thanks!
I've not seen that here but there are others asking it in the forums. I'd reflash and setup without anything plugged in as step one. Best of luck.
@@Painless360 okay I assumed inav was planes only not quads…I’ll have a look
ruclips.net/video/7Z8QPXio-i8/видео.html
Sorry to bother
I watched your video about the Pixhawk 6c
I wonder if Pixhawk 6c has Pimavlink support so I can get data from available sensors because I need them for my project. Thanks
No idea, I've asked HolyBro and if I get an answer - I'll post it here.
Hi Phil,
Have you run the Pixhwak 6C with Luna script on your radio.
Wanting to test. As trying to run pixhawk 6 C on tx16s with inav luna script and got lots of sensors but not 0420 or the tilt, yaw. Works on mission planner.
What versions?
Hi Phil,
Sorry for the late reply. I am using Flying Dutchman V2.8.0 on the tx16s with Iuacc LUA 2.2.0, as using jumper R8 D16 I had to set the protcol to 4 for frsky, not 10 like the video, as would not get telemtry when set to 10
Regards
Dave.
So, what exactly did you change from it working to not working?
You earned a patreon today 🙂
I've not seen you over there, when I do I'll send you the link to all of the secret stuff Patreons get access too.. Thanks for considering it.
Hi painless, i want ask a about my problem. So i cant arm my quadcipter because there is a massage "prearm: battery 1 below minimum arming capacity" do you know how to solve it.
Thank you
Check ardupilot.org/copter/docs/failsafe-battery.html and make sure the power module is plugged into the right power input... Happy flying
@@Painless360 thank you very much, it works. But i have another problem. My mission planner is already clear, but my motor wont spin even though it said success. Can you help me again ?
Please watch my build series, I cover the steps that work for me... Best of luck
Hello
I have pixhawk 6c I use every step you talk about in the video
When the time to try to fly the copter
Won’t fly but fly sideways
I don’t know what I am doing wrong
Can you help out
You've missed something in the setup. It could be lots of causes so I'd recheck evertthing from the start. Best of luck
If you are using the supplied compass then you just follow the steps shown in the series... Best of luck
What doea the model do? I've never heard of one 'stalling' before....
How to use pixhawk with celf centering stick? My throttle goes to 50% automatically... I tried to change the pilot_thr_bhv to 7 still it didn't help me.
Please help me
Thank
I've not used any of those radios here, If you figure it out - let me know!
Hello, Sir
Your videos are very helpful.
@@Painless360 it looks like there is no link between transmitter and sticks/switches
Then you need to check model match as mentioned above.
At this pixhawk 6c
Will px4 will get done what we want ?
Px4 will be similar to this 6c ?
Brother
Yes, very similar. Setup process is the same. Best of luck
@@Painless360
Always 🥰
and also in the device manager, the comport is not showing the Pixhawk name or any other info. it simply shows two additional com ports but it can not be connecting anymore with the Mission Planner, If you please give me any suggestions, I will be very grateful 🙂
Cneck motor direction, the most common error is that one is turning the wrong way... best of luck
@@Painless360I figured it out I had to plug the gps and also the 12c for the two options to show up. My next question to calibrate the gps. Shouldn’t it face north? So it knows what north is? Then spin it 360degrees?
See that process in the video series. It'll figure it out. Best of luck!
flight modes help please
i have ch5 set to arm disarm
ch6 to flight modes stabalize / acro
rc8 to rtl and rc9 to poshold
rc 8 and rc9 are both 3 position switches
how do i set rc8 and rc9 to activate at middle position
1500pwm
at the moment it only activates at 2000pwm
I'd tweak the radio so the channels go high in the switch positions you want. Best of luck
Peace be upon you, Professor. Can you teach me how to program the aircraft, the software that also programs the missile, because I know how to make, but I do not know how to program, I only have a defect in the programming? Can you know anything from the programming?
I am not a coder. I used to program but I am super rusty... Best of luck
I am using pixahawak 2.4.8 then which firmware i should use??
Ardupilot. Same as this series. Best of luck
Hi mate, i had 6c mini after compass calibration successfully i had error gps no fix and blue light’s flashing. How can i fix the error, what set up do i need to change at mission planner. Very appreciate any help

In case of a Failsafe, is it possible to set a parachute release after RTL?
Yes, see my video where we looked at a parachute system (see the Big Boys Toys playlist). Best of luck!
@@Painless360 Sorry, i looked but not found it.
And this all works with all the pixhawk models?

after initial setup how do you know the gps has lock?
Telemetry, osd or via the beeper.. Happy flying
What was the need for reversing elevator channel?
It's been a standard thing with Ardupilot setup for a very long time... Happy flying
Hi great video by the way! Is it possible if someone wish to turn this into variable-pitch quad?
Not without a lot of extra engineering (variable pitch rotors and servos for each motor/prop set)... Happy flying!
I have a Taranis X9D and my controls are swapped. Throttle one the right and roll on the left. Can’t figure out how to fix that.
That depends on where they are swapped,in the radio or in Ardupilot.
I am just trying to set up the drone so not sure which is backwards. How can I figure that out?
Please see the rest of the series this video is part of, I show you all of that. Best of luck!
Bad battery showing in mission planner when I arming what's the problem 😢
@@Painless360 when I arming the motors don't start and in screen in mission planner the bad battery. Do you anderstand sir?

When I start up Arducopter it is asking me to download Altitude Angel. Can anyone explain. Never come across this before.
Sorry meant when I start mission planner. You can tell I’m an old guy!
It is an optional extension to mission planner. See www.unmannedairspace.info/uncategorized/altitude-angel-extends-mission-planner-control-system-new-airspace-safety-tool/
Thanks for that. I just hope I can disable the thing. I didn’t ask for it! Will get my flight controller today so I’ll see.
Thanks for all the great videos and advice.
Do,you have a way to send you a picture of what I have going on and how to maybe fix it?? You other stuff asks not to message you there only here.

Is it normal to have the Pixhawk leans to the right but on the screen in mission planner to show its leaning to the left and then vise versa lean it to the left?
