It's been 5 years since you made this video. If you still have the couch, fail or not, a follow up video sounds like a good idea. Either way, you could celebrate how well it held up or share a "this is what I learned" experience.
You matched that color so well! I have two (free) faux leather couches and I did this very same thing however, I added fabric softener to the paint to make it stretchy. After 3 years, one couch held up great and the other...well, not so much. I'm going to order the acrylic this time and see if this does the trick! Thanks for the tip! Also! If anyone is taking off a significant amount of the peeling, a hair dryer and a table knife makes it come off like butter! Heat up that vinyl and it nearly slides off with the knife!
PRO TIP: peel, sand with fine grit, spray with artist matt clear, spray paint (not brush) to exact color, spray over with gloss leather polish for shoes. It will last much longer and will not crack. Painting may look good but another six months of body heat, shifting while sitting, etc and you have the same problem but now it's cracking under the varnish you painted on. Spraying with leather coat will keep the spray color perfect for a long time and the underspray will stop the continued peeling.
Great video. A few points tho. Don’t use leather wipes to clean. They have moisturizer In them to hydrate leather and those same things will stop the glue or dye or finisher from properly bonding. Wash that area with acetone. The bond should last years.
I'm impressed with you. I admire people that can do things themselves. I'm 81 and I'm amazed at how helpless so many young people are now. OK, now my ideas to help this go easier and faster. Use a 2-3 inch brush when covering a large area like you had to do. Also on this job if you'd laid the couch down on its back the paint wouldn't have run down toward the seat nearly as much. You did a great job but you spent way more time on it than was necessary. The couch looks great and my computer chair is jealous so I'll be doing it. Cheers, Neill
I used this method. Went to local Lowe's. Spend $20 total. It came out decent. I will buy a protector. I had insurance, so Living spaces refunded my money, and they said keep the couch! Thanks
You know what?! You did a pretty darn good job! I honestly would have never even thought of this as an option, so thank you very much. I think it turned out great! 😉
Thank you!! It lasted another year and even still that part didn’t start peeling again. There were other new areas that started to peel on the couch and I finally gave it away at that point
Hi! So I am doing this patch right now and I have some notes! The paint you found works great but I could only find it in small bottles so I had to figure out how to make it last. Mix the right color, add a layer or two, then do the top coat (I found a satin varnish that is pretty spot on for matching a leather sheen) then keep painting to build it up! I found that the fabric absorbs the paint a lot and makes it hard to build up an even surface. My couch is looking so much better now though!
I have that same question. How much paint did you finally buy? I want to redo a handbag in bronze but I only saw the bottles in one ounce sizes and I have no idea if that will be enough for a handbag . I guess I'll buy 2 bottles and if there's any left over I'll use it on shoes or something.
I was honestly just considering buying a new couch cushion (that’s the only part that’s peeling bad) but this is sooo much cheaper. I’m definitely gonna have to try this. I’m tired of having leather pieces follow me wherever I go!
I see you haven't posted in two years but I hope you see this. Thank you so much for this. Amazon still carries all the products you use and I have already ordered them. Your couch looks great and I finally feel like I can repair the places my cats have made on my couch. Hope all is well
Thank you for this. I have a huge headboard that was cracking and peeling. This saved me alot. It doesn't look perfect but it beats having it reupolstered.
Absolutely brilliant! I watched your video and ordered the exact paints and the Black to mix my brown with as well as the acrylic (white liquid) for the finish. It looks fantastic! Thankyou. Mine was as bad as the one in your video and I bought two bottles of dark brown and 1 black. I have five sections to the suite and the paint was enough. I used approx 5 coats overall and it's amazing. Thanks again.
So excited to do this! I just bought a new couch and I was moving it into my apartment , it was super heavy and I peeled the side of it on the brick wall of the apartment 😤 so I really hope this will work
Wow you did an amazing job 👍I have a small peel my couch is dark black so it's hard for someone to notice it but I do so I'm going to get right on this. Thank you so much I feel a lot better since watching your video your the best
You did a GREAT job in your video. I actually just came back home from buying me a used faux leather recliner for only $75. The leather is doing the same as your video shows so I'm going to do just what you did. This recliner doesn't have as much damage as the one you repaired but still can use some repairing. Thanks for providing the video.
I hope it works just as well for you! Only thing I might do different is use a bigger paint brush to make the job go faster! Also some people in the comments recommended trying sandpaper instead of peeling it by hand. Good luck!
thanks, alot ! it looks really good! for everyone that needs quick cash, go to all the offices in your home town and tell them that you will remove any old leather chairs for them for free. most time these offices throw away really good chairs all they need is to paint the leather over and that some quick cash in your pocket.
Somebody need to do a class action suit for all these defective fake "bonded leather" couches. Plastic more Durable-- car seats don't peel as much as a fake leather couch. National disgrace !!! Nice try but you shouldn't have to paint your couch.
Real leather is so much nicer, I agree! But this couch set was actually given to us and we didn't have to pay anything for it, so I am grateful to have it, even if I have to fix it up a bit every now and then :) It really helped us have enough seating for all the family since we're just starting out. Thanks for watching and commenting and sharing your opinion. One day we'll get to upgrade to a better quality couch and that will be very nice! :)
I think lightly sand the peeling edge. Also, I'd use a small foam roller for the final coats of paint and acrylic. Gonna give it a try! Thanks for the video
I am going to be trying this. I looked at all the patches but my peeling couch is too big for them. So I did a google search and here you are. Very helpful!
Maybe I’m stabbing in the dark here but wouldn’t one of those nail sponges work better for paint applications? Would it be a little better to use less abrasive sandpaper where you can tape up a square and get the paint to blend a bit better, no expert here but trying to gauge if maybe someone allready has thought about this and probably have done so.
I was just about to throw away two $1000 leather couches tomorrow, but then I saw your video. I am going to give your method a try! Only concern is matching the color. Is there a service that will take a couch sample and tell you the colors you need to buy and mix to make the color you need?
Thank you very much for this valuable information. My wife wants to buy new couches and I want to show her we can save a lot by just reviving our it ourselves and keep them...their only 4 years old. I'm all for dyi instead of throwing money at stores. 👍🏿
@@SimpleMomming One question. I did everything you said. It looks great, but the the painted area isn't as soft as the rest of the couch. It's pretty ruff in that area. Any ideas on how to smooth it out? Thanks.
Fight The Bully! Yeah, like I mentioned in the video it doesn’t take it back to brand new but it does look pretty good. Mine was also a little rough because it’s fabric underneath the paint. One person suggested that I might have gotten a smoother result if I would’ve used some sand paper to smooth it out first. I’m not sure if that would have helped but I thought that was a good idea. The only thing I can think of is if there is something you could paint over the area first, like to give it a thicker foundation (it would need to be thicker than paint) and then paint on top of that once there’s a smooth texture. I’m not sure if a product like that exists and being a little rough hasn’t bothered me personally, but I know everyone’s couch is probably a little different. I’m sorry it turned out rough :( I wish I knew of a product you could just coat on prior to painting that would give it a smoother base. If you find anything that works, you’ll definitely have to come back and share it with everyone here! I’ll let you know if I hear of anything too!
@@SimpleMomming Ok. Thanks for the reply and will do. I will try to buy cuts of the same fabric or something similar and stitch it to the piece I cut out and blend it in with the paint. Yeah, I understand it won't be perfect but my wife's a tough critic. Lol I'll definitely updated you on the outcome. Once again thanks for your help.
Thank you so very much. I took your advice and peeled away all of the material first. Must admit, I'm totally surprised. I wish I knew how to upload pics. I am shooketh. LOL
Excellent job we were thinking about buying a new couch and loveseat but now I’m gonna do what you did. Thank you so so much for saving us some money ours is peeling just like yours was ours is black and it’s Matt so I’m going to try to do exactly what you did. Thank you so so much. Again🙏🏽❤️🥰
Great video, very informative. I have a 4 yr sofa and love seat that's in good condition still, but the damn faux leather is peeling horribly! Will definitely try the products/tips to repair them. Thanks for posting this!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is the first video I've watched. I am now satisfied to start my diy. Awesome 👌!! I wanted to throw my couch and love seat away. You changed my mind.
Nice transformation. I have a human touch massaging chair recliner. Bought it about 7 yrs ago. Dark grey leather like. It’s peeling in thigh and calf area and arms. Looks terrible. Paid well over $3k. Very disappointed with human touch. Thought to get it reupholstered but it cost about $1,200 plus fabric! This repair might be an option. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this. 1,000 pound chair almost ruined some cleaning spray caught a gust of wind within days the seat the arms and some of the back looked like a flame thrower had hit it. been covered with fabric cover but it looks awful. 100% be trying this I cant throw a £1,000 chair, thank you
What a great fix! I have a couch that has this problem. Upholsterer wants $1200 to redo it. Yikes! How long does this last before it needs to be painted again?
I used the dull corner of a 5 in 1 tool and the peeling came off pretty quick and instead of a brush I used a sponge. Nice work!! Thanks for the video and idea!!
That was better than most videos. How is the couch doing now 2 and a half year later? Maybe one could carefully disolve 1-2 mm of the rim of the repair -spot with acetone and a brush a few hours before painting to get more even transition. - Just an idea and might ruin the job. I especially like that you didnt make an overly long video. All the best and keep them coming :)
You did a phenomenal job!! I have a sofa that is peeling horrifically-the entire couch needs repair! I am currently covering the damage with quilts. The sad thing is that despite the horrific peeling, the sofa is in great shape. I hate the idea of throwing away furniture that has so much life left.
Nice job, You might want to add a step with some very, very fine sandpaper at the transitions from the skin to the underlayment. You could start more coarse to ultra-fine. You might start with 400 grit and ending with 1000, just need to play with your leather. We have a 10 yr old office chair that just started shedding its skin like a bad sunburn. May give this a try.
Great job 👌🏽 thank you for sharing. I have a really nice vest and some of the trim has faux leather I need to do this process on. I'm excited now thank you
Hi I just followed your directions for my peeling couch and it looks great! Thank you. I wonder how long your repair lasted before you saw signs of peeling again? Please let me know.
It lasted for as long as we kept the couch which was over a year after I made this video. We got rid of the couch in October 2019 and it was still holding up in the spot where I painted (it had started to peel in other new unpainted spots though and so I just got tired of keeping up with it at that point. Plus we moved to a much smaller house and didn’t have space for it any longer).
@@SimpleMomming Could a person just spray the acrylic clear stuff on a new leather type couch say every 6 months or so in the normal wear spots to keep it FROM starting to peel in the first place?
I think this is a great idea! I was wondering would some kind of latex filler for the edges. I was thinking hair glue as I'm unfamiliar with the latex options out there. I researched and the paint will stick to the latex. Also, maybe a drop of red to better match the couch; it has a red undertone.
You make this look so easy. You matched the color perfectly. I have a dress coat with mixed wool and leather. The arms are peeling 😫 and I've only worn the coat about 5 times. It says in the closet on its original hanger and covered with the store bag it came home with. I don't understand why it's peeling. I have thought about bedazzling the arms, its only the under part that is leather and peeling. The side panels under the arms have some cracks trying to peel. After seeing your video I'm thinking about leather paint instead 🤔
I have 3 other leather coats in the same closet with zero issues. Two of them are at least 3 sizes to big for me. So I'm thinking another option might be to pay a seamstress to use one of them to repair my dress coat🙄
My sofa has not started to peel but I can tell it's right at the point where it may want to. Do you think I could just put this on top or would I just need to peel it anyway?
If you paint it on top it will not hold. I tried that the first time and it peeled in no time! You have to have a totally solid surface to paint for it last unfortunately. Someone in the comments suggested trying sandpaper and a few others gave some other suggestions to make the job easier. Best of luck to you when the time comes! 👍🏻
Your couch looked amazing. Great work. Unfortunately my PU “leather” couch suddenly suffered a peeling frenzy (I wish I could show you). It will be gone the second Tuesday of December when the city picks up large pieces of junk from our curbs each month. I watched your video because it’s cited in WikiHow. PU leather is under, inside and on top of everything in the house. I appreciate seeing how repair actually works and skillfully it can be done - when the entire couch is not affected. Thank you again for sharing your expertise.
you did a great job!! ok, now I'm going to go for it - seriously I think I have exactly the same couch! my peeling is nearly alll of the two seats though and foot rests - about how many tubs of the 4oz black and brown colors did you go through for your project please?? Thanks again so much!
If I remember correctly, I think I might of used around 2 of the brown and maybe half of 1 of the black... 🤔 I hope it works out for you! Some people in the comments suggested sanding it first to make a smoother surface which I think may have worked even better than what I did :) Good luck!
@@SimpleMomming hi again! I’m ordering now- if I use your link I hope you get a little credit- I would NEVER have found it except for your video! QUESTION: so if you used about 2 and a half bottles of the Paint should I also get two and a half bottles of the Top Coat? Or maybe less because only one layer? Thanks!
I hope this method works for you! Be sure to check the comments for more great suggestions that viewers added which may improve the method that I used.
Looks a lot better et the end! I saw another repair video a while back and they sanded and even used leather filler to even out the surface before painting
Omg! @Christy Lyn I love this video and my couch is the same way I have couch covers on it now but it's a hassle fixing them all the time 😊 I'm going to try this thanks so much for this how to video I'll let you know when I try it.
Can this work on fake leather?? Anyway, this was a great video. All you need is some cute pillows and a little throw to add some style...no one will notice that part. Great job!!!!
Thanks for this!! I have been living with a couch that looks as bad or worse then yours. Cats destroyed it almost as soon as I bought it😟. It’s been covered with blanket throws since. Going to give this a try.
you probably should've used a solvent instead of peeling... it will make the whole process easier and also it will melt the surface layer and make it stick better to the tissue (if it's not removed with a towel) this will leave the edges less prominent and some sandpaper will make everything even and smooth and ready for the painting... makeup sponges also would have been better than paint brushes. It's possible also to match the skin pattern (ridges) by doing some sort of resin after spraying or applying a bit of oil on a part that is fine and reversing it with another preferable silicon mold that can be used later as a stamp on a thick final layer. Anyway, thank you so much for the tutorial and the products' suggestion.
I need to do the seats of my sofa. I've don't this a few times and it never lasts, but I didn't use the sealer. Duh! I didn't watch any videos. I saw the product on Amazon. I have some spray shellac. I wonder if it would work?
The stuffing is bursting out the tear, what do i do pull or push stuffing back in and try to push the edges back together, im using goop, but i see locktite sell this product and it also fixes vinyl! Can u please help me! Thanks

I saw now that it was still fine after one year when you changed it
This video is a life saver! I wish I could post my pictures! Thanks so much
Thank you Christy for this informative video. I can’t wait to get the materials and rescue my leather chair.
this is very talented and skilled work that requires a lot of patience....
Hi @Christy Lyn, good great! How much paint did you used for the chair? and do you feel any stickiness from the paint?? Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this! My great grandson was picking at the arm of our couch and it looks terrible. Definitely going to try this!!!
I hope it works well for you too! :)
You did a phenomenal job 👌 thanks for making this informative and helpful video
You’re so welcome!! Thanks for commenting!
You did a phenomenal job!! I have a sofa that is peeling horrifically-the entire couch needs repair! I am currently covering the damage with quilts. The sad thing is that despite the horrific peeling, the sofa is in great shape. I hate the idea of throwing away furniture that has so much life left.
Thank you!! I hope this works for your couch!
This is amazing I'm so glad I found your video, just purchased a sectional from the thrift store
Such a good idea! Thanks!!
Great job. Looks good. Can this be used on a purse. And does it come in color.
Thanks, followed your steps and was able to salvage the couch... probably added 2-3 more years to it.. !
@@SimpleMomming omg thanks so much for the speedy reply!!
You’re very welcome! ☺️
Thanks!
@@NYENERGIZERFAVES I don’t remember exactly, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t use as much of the clear coat as I did the color paint... 🤔 Good luck!!
Thank you, my sofa is the same exact color. This video is Truly helpful
Great job 🥰
Thanks for your help...
What coverage did you get with the 4oz bottle? I have about 3 times what you did to cover.
Wish I could show you the outcome of my couch but much like yours. I’m so happy!
Looks great! How long did it last after using the couch like normal?
It was still lasting a year later when we got rid of the couch (we moved into a smaller place and there wasn’t room for it)
Thank you for your video. The painting technique makes the most sense to repair vinyl.
Can you please share the link for these products you use. Thank you
Thank you so much for your video. Followed your steps and my damaged leather dining chairs look almost new.
New subscriber! 😊great job. I never knew you could paint a leather couch. I need to do this, my couch has started to peel too!
I hope this method works for you! Be sure to check the comments for more great suggestions that viewers added which may improve the method that I used.
Thanks so much, I am in the process of using this on my chairs I am really excited about how it is turning out. You saved my chairs!
Brava, Christy, I really like what you did. That repair looks great, and thank you for the video.
Thank you! I’m glad it was helpful :)
I would add a touch of red paint if you do this again. It will match better
Looks a lot better et the end!
I saw another repair video a while back and they sanded and even used leather filler to even out the surface before painting
Can you link that video? I’m about to repair my couch.
Omg! @Christy Lyn I love this video and my couch is the same way I have couch covers on it now but it's a hassle fixing them all the time 😊 I'm going to try this thanks so much for this how to video I'll let you know when I try it.
Hi there! Wondering if you have an opinion on using the leather paint vs chalk paint as I have seen both options.
Thanks so much for this video. I just bought a used ottoman and it's peeling
Can this work on fake leather?? Anyway, this was a great video. All you need is some cute pillows and a little throw to add some style...no one will notice that part. Great job!!!!
Yes, this technique is specifically for fake leather :)
Thanks for this!! I have been living with a couch that looks as bad or worse then yours. Cats destroyed it almost as soon as I bought it😟. It’s been covered with blanket throws since. Going to give this a try.
What do you mean! It looks so perfect to me. You did a great job
Hi! Is it working for headphones? Thanks.
How long did all this take? The end result looks great but I'm thinking it probably took hours of your time to accomplish ...yes?
you probably should've used a solvent instead of peeling... it will make the whole process easier and also it will melt the surface layer and make it stick better to the tissue (if it's not removed with a towel) this will leave the edges less prominent and some sandpaper will make everything even and smooth and ready for the painting... makeup sponges also would have been better than paint brushes.
Wow those are great suggestions!! I will definitely try some of them on another couch I need to repair! Thanks!!
Anoir. Can you explain how?
Looks great. I have the same couch and was searching for a repair option. Yours was the first video I found.
Hey! I’m 2 years late but how did this hold up over time? Anything you’d do differently?
I need to do the seats of my sofa. I've don't this a few times and it never lasts, but I didn't use the sealer. Duh! I didn't watch any videos. I saw the product on Amazon. I have some spray shellac. I wonder if it would work?
I think you would need a paint to bring back the color after peeling off the parts that are already peeling up.
@@SimpleMomming how long do u wait for the paint to dry between coats?
Omg! I must try this. Thank you so much for the tutorial
The stuffing is bursting out the tear, what do i do pull or push stuffing back in and try to push the edges back together, im using goop, but i see locktite sell this product and it also fixes vinyl!
Can u please help me!
Thanks
