    I don't know what I would do without your pool videos.. They are the best instructional videos I have found and are the only reason I know anything about my pool.. I just found that the lid to my basket is both cracked and broken and my o ring needs to be replaced because of this video in particular. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and please keep posting!!!

    OMG THANK YOU!!! Easter weekend and I noticed my pool pump was half full while running. I know nothing about pool pumps. I watched a couple of other videos and just about gave up until I got to yours and saw the impeller thing. I checked mine and it was super full of leaves! Did the screwdriver thing and pulled the leaves out by hand. My pool pump is now back in action full up!!! Thank you SO much.

    Dude, you are a lifesaver (or I should say money saver). I forgot to put the basket back in after removing the debris. Turned the pump on and after about couple of days, pump would not prime and move water properly. I realized my mistake but didnt know what to do. Your video talked about the impeller and I realized right away that what happened to my pump. Spinned the impeller with a screwdriver and now all working well. Thanks buddy.

    Thank you so much. You can tell I'm brand new to pools. We will address it next week after we have all our trees around our pool removed. We probably need to replace the sand in the filter too. We just bought the house, and the pool was badly neglected for years. We just got it re-plastered. Thanks a lot.

    This is typical in any field. I know several honest pool guys.. A referral from a friend is usually a safe bet. It took me forever to find an honest plumber for my house. It's very easy to sell a customer a $100 part when all he needed was a $5 part or no part at all. I've been called out to fix a pool light only to find the breaker was tripped. Easily could have charge the customer $150 for flipping the breaker - true story - you can call her if you want ;)

    Thanks for the great video. My pump wasn't starting. I had noticed that the O-ring seemed a bit loose in the cap over the pump strainer basket. I put some keg lube gel on it and now the pump starts right up. Must have been leaking air into the system to prevent priming. Time to buy another O-ring. Thanks for tipping me off to this cheap fix.

    Not sure if you are referring to closing your pool for the Winter or not. I have an account with these valves, I close them when I clean the pump basket since it is below sea level and it would flood the equipment room if I left them open. I am not sure about closing your pool for the winter as we don't do that much in California.

  • @SPL

    If something is jamming the impeller it will do that. Then shut itself off. Then power back on in a couple of minutes and do the same think. The Diffuser in front of the impeller could also be melted and jamming it up. Take the cap off the back and use a wrench to turn the shaft and see if the impeller spins freely. Most pumps have a cap on the shaft in the back. If not, see if the impeller spins with a screwdriver against it from the pump basket area and use your hand to kinda spin it.

    I just use the glue that I use for my PVC pipes - 2356S POOL-TITE BLUE GLUE .5PT. You can also glue a small piece of plastic with it over the crack if applying the glue directly over the crack fails. I had a tree in my front yard crack a sprinkler pipe and I used this with a tiny piece of PVC pipe to seal it up good. I also use the Pool Tite glue on automatic cleaners and it is very effective.

    Excellent, thanks for the follow up. I'm thinking that my water level may have been a bit low as well. We have been pretty dry lately, so I added some more water. It was about 1/4 up the skimmer, so I filled it to about 3/4 up the skimmer opening.

    Thanks for the advice. I called the guy who plastered our pool, and he said he didn't see anything out of the norm. He said he has seen a lot of old pumps not fill entirely to the top in the pump basket. We have a Hayward pro series. I hope he is not full of it. I'm going to address the suggestions you offered. Should all pump baskets be full of water even in older pumps?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 лет назад +1

      Usually there is no air in the pump unless air is getting into the system. Your pump runs off of a closed system which means only water should be in the swimming pool lines. If there is air in the pump then there is air in the line. Try what I suggested. I have one account with a really old American Products Pump (20 years old) that wasn't filling with water. I cleaned the filter and still it was half way with water. I took it apart and checked the Diffuser in the pump and it looked fine. I changed the o-ring and still it was only half full. There were no Jandy Valves before the pump so I couldn't figure it out. I thought maybe the pump top is just warped from age, so I took the new o-ring and applied gobs of silicone glue on it. I put the lid back on the pump and it filled up all the way with water. It is still like that and working good. The customer was amazed as it never filled up more than half way before. I try not to clean that pump basket out very often - but yes, even an old pump should fill all the way up.

    Learned this insight today: Put a hose and blowbag into my skimmer while the pump ran and bleeder valve was open in order to get a prime, but didn't get a prime even once water started flowing -- because the hose blocked the skimmer and prevented sufficient suction. At that point, I removed the hose from the skimmer and quickly got my prime.

    If you have a cartridge filter you need to take it apart and clean it. I have 2 videos on my site to show you how (one Pentair & one Hayward). If your filter is DE, then you can give it a backwash and see if that helps (I have a video on my Channel showing you how). If it has been 6 months since it was cleaned I recommend cleaning it, I have 2 filter cleaning videos for both types of DE filters also on my Channel.

    Just the one in the back. The one in the front is the main drain bypass. It should stop the water flow for you.

    Thanks for the video. I have a 310T Hayward filter and a pump that has the two black knob clear cover. The problem is the pump is not holding a prime. When it is turned on it takes a few minutes for it to pull the water in. It then rolls good at the top of the cover. When it goes off all the water rushes back from the sand filter and the prime is lost. I did recently change the sand and it is worse now. I also noticed water squirting out of the cover and replaced the gasket and tightened the knobs when it was working. It helped but it still squirts it a little. I did the smoke test for leaks on the suction side and could not find any leaks. Any suggestions?

    I came home to my pool pump off today. After shutting the breaker off for a while I turn it back on to hear a humming sound. It’s a pentair 1.5 hp that might be about 3 years old. I saw another video suggesting it could be a capacitor? The shaft does in fact spin freely so is that a good sign or is it RIP? Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated as usual. Thank you!

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 лет назад

    Sounds like your pool equipment is below sea level & you don't have any ball valves to shut off the water flow -if I am reading your question correctly. If that is the case you will need a 1 1/2" threaded pug to put in the skimmer or do what I do, just stick a tennis ball in the skimmer pipe blocking the water flow. If that is not your question please let me know

    One of the most informative videos Ive seen. Thank you. I only have loss of suction when vacuuming.I use a skim vac plate so my cleaning is quicker. I noticed plastic vac plate was not seating down tightly in skimmer. I found a gasket that attached to vac plate and it stopped air leak so well Im able to use my vacuum hose that has a couple small holes in it. I wonder if you have seen this product? I think co. name is poolvacsaver.

    • @toddhuffer7854

      I agree, its a gasket that adheres to my vac plate. Very simple, but it overhangs beyond vac plate. The extra material seems to give it more surface area to stop air leaks around vac plate. I purchased based on sites explanation of product. You are correct they need pictures showing how it adheres to vac plate.( They do have pix with instructions when purchased). I have been a viewer of yours and in my opinion you have a wealth of solid advice and a knack for delivering it. Thanks and keep it coming.

    Please help..... My pump won't prime. If I fill my pump it doesn't stay full, it drains out of the pump into the pipes. I checked the lid for cracks--there are none and the lid washer is fine and magic lubed up. Adjusting the placement of the pump relieved the stress/pulling at the attachments and stopped the leak at the screw valve/pipe coming out of the top of the pump. When I adjust the jandy valve that adjusts the skimmer and vacuum there seemed to be a problem there. The vacuum works, I'd say, excellent when the valve is positioned at 3 o'clock. At 1:30 is supposed to be the even split between the vacuum and the skimmer. The skimmer works poor there and equally poor at 12 pm where the skimmer is suppoed to be at full force. There are random bubbles, sometimes more than others, that come out of the jacuzzi jets and pool jets--especially at the start of the pump. I've disassembled the jandy valve and the knob moves the valves as it should, the plastic square shaped washer and cover seem to be fine too..?? So I am sooo confused at where the problem lies. Can you please help me? I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thank you so much. I tried to spin the impeller, it does spin slowly. Not sure if it's because of the amount of water in there. But if something was clogged, I assume I would need to remove the 6 bolts to gain access to it back there? My pump is not priming

    • @SPL

      It could be a bad jam or the impeller may be cracked. Yes, remove those and inspect.

    Is your equipment far from the skimmer? I have this problem in some pools that have their equipment pretty far from the skimmer and slightly above the pool level. Gravity is working against you then. Try using a 5 gallon bucket of water - that should do the trick - I use an old 3" chlorine tablet bucket in some cases - they are usually pretty large.

    Could you give me some tips please.....? My pool is around 2.5m below the pump, main drain another 1.5m below that. I am trying to prime the pump, it is brand new. I cannot get the water to a full level, only around 1/1,5" below the pump lid. The return ports are only giving, what I would say half pressure/flow back in to the pool. Do you think the levels are the problem (pump been running 4 hours now), or do you think I should be looking at one of the problems in your video? Or is there a trick with the valves, maybe half opening one valve or both. Grrrrrrrrr!!! I've tried letting the air out of the top of the sand filter, but I keep getting air trapped there.......help!!! Oh, pump is also 30m from the pool!

    Is it common for the impeller to get blocked up from long hair? My pool has only been in about 2 months and it lost prime multiple times this week. I manually spun the impeller each time to free it up. My daughter has long hair and i have noticed hair in it on a couple of occasions. Is it going to just keep happening or is their some remedy?

    • @SPL

      That is not a common problem as the pump basket should trap most if not all of the hair. However there are a few solutions besides a haircut ;(.
      Installing this in the skimmer basket (not the pump basket) should solve the problem. www.amazon.com/Pool-Filter-Savers-Skimmer-5-Pack/dp/B00373PFT8/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1404783875&sr=1-1&keywords=filter+savers
      If you have a suction side cleaner you will also need this canister.
      www.amazon.com/Pentair-R211084-Clear-Handle-Cleaner/dp/B001E8ZL8S/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1404783943&sr=1-1&keywords=pentair+leaf+trap
      After doing this nothing should get into the impeller.

    My pool pump doesn't have any pressure. I have open the lid to see if there is anything in the basket and then I turn the value at the top to let air out and so the basket can fill with water. Then I turn the pump on and the I turn the value again to let air out and then it starts to shoot water out and it goes out about 10 feet and then I turn it off. I then check to if there is any suction at the hole where you put the vacuum hose and it has suction for about a minute and then it just stops. It looks alot like the first one you showed.

      Yeah it was a filthy filter. I had to clean it 3 times before it kept its suction. I need to clean it again so I can have a nice pool for the summer.

    I used to work for pinch a penny. And they would have me start from 9am and they close the store at 6pm. They had me with 15 pools daily and I would do all your doing of checking the equipment and the lines and of course cleaning the pool itself. So it would run me to a little after 6 pm that I'd be done and returning. My boss would be mad and yell at me saying why I couldn't be faster like the guys who were always done by 2pm or less. Does that mean. I'm going too slow?

    What kind of filter is it? DE or Cartridge.

    thanks for the info...Question: My pool cartridges are full of water and not letting the chemicals (DE) go through and shooting it back into the pool. Why is that??
    thanks for your response. : )

      The de grids have a hole in them and allowing the de to return back into the pool. You will have to open up the filter and check each grid for any holes.

    My old pump gave up the ghost. I had the electricians check it and its dead. I have now installed the new pump which is slightly stronger than the previous pump Original was .06KW the new one is .075KW as there are no smaller pumps available.
    All hooked up and filled the bucket to the pipe line would not fill further. I then closed up and Nothing. I cant create any pressure. Ive tried it on backwash, waste Rinse and filter and still nothing.
    Do I have a piping problem? Ie blocked? or am I doing something wrong?

    My pump has cavitation and I think it is sucking air from the actuator. Is this possible? I have a multiport valve leak but that is after the suction side. The air leak is not very bad as only small bubbles are coming into the spa and pool return jets, but it is driving me crazy and over time cavitation will cause problems. Any ideas?

      You will have to use Google. I usually go with the companies that pay for the ads. So any of the 1st 3 listed. My logic? Since they are paying $4 per click they want your business and will treat you right for a good Google Review.

    Water does get sucked when I pour straight into the basket as your's did in the video. I'm looking for a reason why hosed water into the skimmer is going straight back into the pool, instead of priming through the pump.
    I've already blown out the skimmer & watched the water shoot through but then it reverts back into the pool. So the pump is working.
    Any other ideas?

    Discovered my filter basket has very low water level in the morning and the pump wont prime, the filter was also filled with air. I manually primed pump and got it going and will trouble shoot where air is leaking in per this video. After the pump was running I noticed a banging noise in the pipe on the return side after my sta-right heater. Sounds like a part from the heater broke and is banging around inside the pipe that returns to the pool....ever see something like this?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  7 лет назад

      Yes. It happens with those heaters. Be careful the return line doesn't get completely blocked as the filter could explode. /my guess is it is stuck in the check valve - if you have one after the heater.

    My pump, which is for a above ground 5-8 thousand gallon pool I believe and, the pump will turn on but, makes a humming noise and if left on, will blow a circuit. This is a problem that needs fixing because there are now tadpoles and mosquito larvae, please help me with any suggestions. I have cleared the pipes, checked the basket, and even checked the filter itself, all is clear. Any idea what is wrong?? Please get back.

      Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1
      okay, thank you! I am going to try the thing where you check the pump for debris, I have checked all the lines but the pump. My model was actually an older model, that is what the pool man said when he had to replace our filter because the filters were no longer being made for that specific D.E filter. So, I will check out the pump, the pool is really dirty and quite an embarrassment as I know how to keep it clean but with no pump working it is near impossible.

    Wednesday I cleaned my DE filter and after a few minutes I started the kreepy. Today I put the skimmer basket instead of kreepy and all the water in the pool was being sucked or drained by pump. Is it normal. I don't live where pool is located.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  5 лет назад

      Maybe the water level is low in the pool. The kreepy works with a lower water level.

    • @acf846
      @acf846 5 лет назад

      @@SPL Noo, it sounds like it, huh. But, no it was accurate level, however when it was draining into skimmer I even added more water!
      I'm thinking maybe the pump never primed properly Wednesday (the psi wasn't reading properly when I left it was at 1-2psi )

    would impeller issues be a cause of huge amount of air bubbles returning into pool?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 лет назад

      Sounds more like the diffuser inside. This acts to kinda siphon the water into the Impeller so if it is warped or melted the impeller will generate air. Usually the pump runs okay but over time it has less power.
