Little late with this but I just got the MIOPS and saw the same thing, that the laser mode gets overwhelmed in daylight. Did find a pretty easy solution. I took around a 1 inch square of gaffers tape and poked a tiny hole in the middle of it. Then I covered the front sensor unit with the tape and placed the tiny hole over the sensor bulb. This took the light levels down enough to use a laser in daylight. The only issue is that you really need to careful aim the laser into the tiny hole you made. The nice thing is the gaffers tape can be easily removed and stuck to the body of the trigger until you need it again. Hope this helps someone.
Hi ! I feel sorry for happened to you ! I don’t know if it comes from this but I saw on Miops website that the laser mode is not working during the day. I don’t have the Miops trigger but I bought the Pluto trigger. I knew the same problem will occur. But I managed to use the laser mode during the day simply by placing a camera ND filter in front of the sensor, it worked for me !
Hopefully there will be a fix for the bright light problem. Gotta say though, you are as persistent as all gitout Jeroen, on getting diving photos of the Kingfisher. Thanks for sharing.🙂
Thank you Jeroen - Useful information which has saved me some money! I think that there is a similar trigger device available called PLUTO and on their website, they make.the point that the laser does not work in daylight. Guess I am still looking for a solution - passive infra red sensors are likely to give me too many false triggers but maybe I will have to give that idea a go.
@@weylintracking-worldwide Thank you. I have just ordered a laser trigger device from VersaTrigger.co.uk who make the point that it works in daylight. The laser itself is a low power device and after communicating with the designer/seller, believe that it will be animal safe. They are a small company with not so much exposure on the internet although I did find one RUclips video describing their first product, the Versa Trigger.
Glad to hear that the video was of help David! I have to add, now they have a new version. It might be solved with that version. I have not tested it myself...
I searched for videos that deal with this problem. I purchased a hahnel product which has exactly the same issue and problem. The reason for purchase was for bird in flight images but as i found it also did not work. I am at present making a fitting to hold a small tube which hopefully will cut out ambient light.

I’ve just had a thought Jeroen. Could you not try using one or two Neutral density filters in the path of the laser..... try a 10 stop or two if needed ! Just a thought
That is something I might try, but did not had the chance then. It was all happening too quickly and fiddling around with the smart+ only took time away from making shots at the location... You already know which of the two I preffered to do ;)
Have you been able to try the ND filters since then? I asked MIOPS support what laser I should buy for a similar project, and they answered 5mW. I think that is more powerful (albeit green) than the cat toy you bought. Also, did you think about using the motion sensor (on a smart phone) as the trigger - the MIOPS can do that and has given me a couple of decent swallow shots.
I would never use a green laser... It is too powerful and if it shines in the eye the animal would be blind. Too risk full for me... I did nooit idee the motion sensor. Only manually as on the video... Maybe next year!
I am still struggling with understanding how and whether the inverse square law applies to lasers; but in my plan the swallows will only fly through it, never be "caught in the beam" for longer than one wing flap. It sounds, too, as though I may need to throttle down the beam with an ND filter (I have a 10 stopper), which should reduce the impact of a beam whose source will, on average, be 7.5 metres away. I did wonder whether you might have had more success had you been able to extend the distance between your laser and SMART device. Ah well, "lijden is leren", as they say in your part of the world.
It all took too much time then, while many good photo opportunities went past. In the end just remotely triggering a burst of images worked out. Miops smart trigger is an awesome device which will come in handy for another project soon, I am sure :)

Hi Jeroen, thanks for this heads up, I was thinking of getting one of those devices, but clearly your experience indicates it’s no good. Clearly the manufacturers have not designed it for wildlife.... that’s very disappointing........ 😟

My wife has bought one and we cannot get any consistent behaviour with laser or sound. The app says laser monitored while the device doesn't. Have found it totally be frustrating to use and no manual to be found anywhere.
That the birds would trigger a bell somehow? I do not yet see how I could implement that... In the end I used a remote control which gave me some great shots!

@@weylintracking-worldwide I don't know what happened, it took more than 300 blank pictures of the game trail. Maybe because of the cange in the ambient light
Im a big MIOPS fan and have each of their 3 triggers - flex, smart + and Mobile . NONE OF THEM work outside - green or red laser. false claims by MIOPS. It works great INSIDE and is very responsive. For any outside or Bird photography where I use the “Break laser beam” idea, I bought the VERSATRIGGER from an outfit in England. (Note there is a non-camera piece of gear with the same name so keep searching). NO ISSUES to date and since they use common 3.5mm and 2.5mm plugs, it is easy to add audio extension cables . I’ve used up to 100 feet without any impact.
I received an updated hardware version from Miops, but its actually still in the package it came in... To be honest I think if I would do it automated again first thing I would think about is using canera trapping hardware. Versatrigger sounds interesting, I will search for it!

A great idea Jeroen and must be frustrating that it wasn't working as you expected. I have tried capturing diving shots on the local river but the distance from camera to the Kingfisher was too great and meant the quality wasn't what I hoped for either. I had the same issue with laser until I used a green laser... then I had success. The green laser is so much brighter that it can easily be used in bright conditions
I think the device itself is an awesome thing. But, don't buy it for using with a laser during the daytime... Might work with a green laser. But those are dangerous, can blind the bird permanently...

Stronger lasers, like green ones, are dangerous for the animals. So for me they were out of the question.
Try a test with a better laser and maybe even different color. It might not be the Miops but the lower light laser.
