I worked at the Roanoke steel plant the last 3 years after steel dynamics bought it ! Loved the job, diagnosed with m/s running a overhead meltshop crane carrying 80 tons of melting steel, I was not putting the guys on the ground lives in danger for my problem ! Miss those guys, loved that job, but all good things come to a end they say !!
I'm watching this as a model railroader who wants to figure out how to model a small section of this. Pretty informative and helpful. Always looking for more info though, so if you know more about the rail cars going in an out, let me know please.
I was told once that the research report Bethlehem Steel wrote on why thin slab casting wouldn't work was thicker than the slabs cast by SDI and Nucor.
I work in the electricity industry in the UK and one of my Substations supplies an EAF, and boy do they take some current when operating! Makes the volts on the 33kV side jump around like crazy.
It's awesome...we use 33kV primary too...450V secondary...currents playing around 250-350Amps. LMF facility current downsized to around 100-150Amps. It's just an amazing process I have experienced for more than 15 years.
2nd largest processer of scrap, man thats two indiana companies that made it big, I belive omnisource started out in fort wayne or indy, and sdi that is dekalb county indiana born and is like number 2 steel producer in the nation and they are less then 20 years old that is an accomplishment, though with some techniques Mr Busse learned while at nucore with the mini mill concept, it is not a small feat to get that big in such a short time in an industry like steel that was dominated by heavyweights many of who are no longer around or as big as the heyday.
I wonder how this compares to a coking plant where they capture the gasses and use for power generation. Not just gas, but other chemicals that can be sold.

Carbon neutral by 2050. I guess Iron Dynamics can kiss it's rear end goodbye. Best thing really. Gas based direct reduced iron processes like Midrex are the superior technology.
Midrex is not carbon neutral by any stretch of the imagination. It uses copious quantities of natural gas. The mini mills that melt scrap are far closer.
@@lowercherty Yes Midrex with a natural gas reformer does use a lot of natural gas but Midrex fed with hydrogen from electrolytic production is carbon neutral. There is no making Iron Dynamics carbon neutral. I work with the man who designed and commissioned Iron Dynamics and even he said iIron Dynamics is a doomed process. Even the mighty Steel Dynamics invests in bad technology from time to time.
The promotioal and advertising guru's make you feel pathetic if you dont have the latest car , washing machine , fridge or any other comsumer goods that are made predominantly from steel . The environmentalists frown upon any one that drives an older car . The off set of 1 mpg extra doesnt equate to the pollution produced melting down a older vehical and then produce a whole new set of emmisions to made a similar vehical . I read some rants on pollution and carbon foot prints on a blokes fb page named Gregory O'Meley Interest points on subjects that Greta sourthumb hasnt touched on
How comical and misogynistic 😆 I work in one and was told I am one of the best coilers they have. There are many of us working there. We even drive the semis and operate the cranes. We’ll run circles around you.

Everyone should see an electric arc furnace in action; it's the definition of spectacular.
Instablaster.
Indeed.
I worked in a big steel mill over 30 years and the first time I heard electric arc I thought it was the end of the world. HAHAHA .
DIRTY JOBS steel worker, that was my world!!
@@danielmota1095 ..and earning a clean living in it too. I relate well to that. Thanks.
Wow! Excellent video. Thanks for showing and explaining the processes so well. I appreciate the recycling end of your business, too. Very well done!

I my memories internship in 1998 with SDI. I loved that moment.
I get the pleasure of working in this plant time to time as a contractor with Horner Industrial and it’s an amazing facility. Hard to take it all in.

Its always cool seeing places you have worked at thru the years.
I was told once that the research report Bethlehem Steel wrote on why thin slab casting wouldn't work was thicker than the slabs cast by SDI and Nucor.
True. I actually worked for Beth Steel at that time. Several years later, I was with SDI-Butler and enjoyed quite a few yrs there!

WIsh it was longer video,,place looks great!
I really enjoyed this video! Educational and well done.
somewhere, someone had to think up all this.... amazing
I would enjoy seeing a video of the structural and rail division mill in Columbia city, IN
farmerboy9207 I get to work in these two locations and let me tell you it is not only amazing but it’s just hard to take it all in. I love it.
Worked out there in the late 90’s , it was pretty cool
Thank you Sir and SDI.

My dad love doing this a driving truck 👍
Fantastic thats the way to make it Great to watch thanks
I wish they could do the same with all the plastics that end up in the oceans.
Very interesting and informative.
Excellent
Electric bill of 8 mil a month? With 115 megawatts they might as well build there own powerplant 😅
They'd save a lot of money that's for sure

@Mateo Jamari whats this? A new subtile way to spam? 🤔
It’s amazingly amazing
is this company still in operation?
Absolutely!
@@marka5478 Glad to hear it. I'm not sure if there are any iron or steel mills left in UK thanks to being in EU.

See I think these type companies should get free electric, or natural gas or what ever they are using,

7 to 8 million a month electric bill. I have to call BS on making a profit
We make a huge profit!

Check steel prices multiplied by the tonnage quoted in the video before making that comment
😂😂😂😂 SDI is extremely profitable

Ridiculous comment. SDI employs many women and they are a key part of the company’s success
