Value proposition of the Tenere 700: It's cheap to buy, cheap to insure, cheap to run. Parts are readily available, based on the MT-07 engine platform that's proven reliable with low maintenance costs. No fancy electronic gizmos that can get faulty or intrude in your riding, you learn to become a better rider rather than having the electronics save your mistakes. Imo electronics should be there to save you in hazard moments, not to make worse riders "better" by doing the job for them. Also, saves cost and weight. It's a simple bulletproof package out of the box, even if something does go wrong its going to be 10x easier to fix than anything that might happen to the KTM. And this is probably the biggest factor in chosing a proper ADV bike, and not just the highway slayers that are approved for knobbies (looking at you, GS1200). In the end, when saving 3 grand on an adventure bike, how much suspension can you get for that kind of money, and still have enough left to pay repair bills and fuel for years? The whole point of adventure riding is to have a sturdy reliable machine that is cheap and easy to fix, and you can depend on it getting you to your destination. The Tenere ticks all those boxes, so everything above that becomes a surplus where value for money play the biggest role. Here, all the KTM bikes start losing out to the competition.
I couldn't agree more. Simple, affordable Japanese reliability. I hope Yamaha keep their wits about them and not give in to the whims of "bad riders" to add a host of rider aids like what happened to the Africa twin. Great review and comparison! One little thing I'd like to point out that if you have the KTM in Rally mode (maybe you have to purchase that option on the non-R?) the settings stay even after turning off the ignition.
Im confused , I have the 790 Adventure R and you don't need to reset the settings every time you turn it off. It stays in the modes you leave it in. Does this not happen on the standard ?
So, best comparative review I've seen to date! I own both a 1290 Super Adventure and a 790 Adv R and the 790 Adv R is the bike I would have bought over the 1290 Super Adv had it been available in 2017 Most of my previous bikes were Yamaha, my first being a YZ125 when I was a kid, an XT500 when I was 18, then came the IT enduro bikes, Maico 490 Alpha 1, a TT600 and quite a few road bikes too.. When I test rode the 790 Adv "S" (non-R) at the dealer, I was impressed, this one had "RallyMode" enabled as well as the QS+ (quick shifter +) enabled and I was sold, but I wanted the 790 Adv R and ordered it then and there with QS+ and cruise control (I live in France and it's almost as bad as the UK with "safety cameras) Then came the announcement of the T7, so I had to mull as to whether I should have bought another Yamaha or my 2nd KTM I made the right choice, as you fine gentlemen said, the 790 Adv R is in a class of its own... Why didn't do a rundown on the RallyMode electronics and did the 790 Adv R you rode have QS+? Thanks for this video and I'll say it again... best comparative review to date!
Al, have you tried leaving the key in the on position and using the kill switch instead when you're stop-starting on the KTM? It didn't used to reset the ABS on my SMCR this way, but would if I turned the key off.
Yep, won't be long before there'll be fork cartridges and shocks for the Tenere 700 in the aftermarket, solving any damping issues on rough stuff. That would jack the price about 1500-2000 dollars above purchase price, but that's still outside the price range of the 790A and 790AR.
Great video - really enjoyed it. I seem to want every bike that appears in a 44T vid.......BTW - is that bike at the end the limited ed rally version? Akra can makes me wonder..if so, the suspension is even further upgraded over the ‘normal’ R ??
🙋🏻♂️ 790 owner here... I’m confused that you have to reset your settings when you shut the bike off. I know this was an issue with the other bikes in their ADV line but it’s been updated for the 790. At least the one I purchased in August and have about 3700 miles on the odometer now it has always kept my last settings upon killing the ignition and re-starting the bike.
Brilliant review mates! Mossy had me spitting me kafe all over the place ! He's a KEEPER ! Rides the shyte out of those steeds as well ! Very very well done, keep up the proper vid's guys !
I bought my Africa Twin DCT brand new for £9k in 2017 (pcp at £70pm) and come September I'll have to decide if it's worth £6.4k to buy it completely or is the yamaha worth an extra £2.4k..?
Thanks for the comparison review it’s really helpful! Just wondering whats the maximum cruising speeds for both the ktm and t700 without stressing the engine?
Great stuff..good to see the Tenere is such a good bike. Yamaha HAVE increased the price to £9100 , still good value. By the way, I hear the people from the Oxford English Dictionary are including the phrase 'Rally Slag' in the next edition.....Cheers, Steve
Great Review you guys are hilarious being vertically challenged at 5:6 I understand your point of view of tall seat heights. We r still waiting for the Tenere here in 🇨🇦.
Shame you guys didn't elaborate on the options you can add to the KTM and how effective Rally mode is. Great comparison though. I got a chubby for the Adv R so I bought one. The up/down quickshifter is bloody marvelous offroad.
As an off-roader I didn’t prefer the quickshift I found that the slightest pressure on the lever would cut throttle as if I were about to initiate a shift. I keep it disabled. The Rally mode is incredible though and contrary to the video my bike keeps the settings between rides.
@@backroads_gb I know what you mean about the quickshifter and some light pressure but I've adjusted the height/angle of my shift lever and I don't have a big issue with it. For me the benefits outweigh the negative. I tend to stick my left foot slightly out so it's not over the lever, which ordinarily would be bad practice for catching things but, they still remain withing the protection of the tank lower. Still have to get the ergos dialed in for when standing (bar height / angle, clutch angle/length) so changing gear without using the clutch is much easier and far more comfortable especially as you can change down with the throttle open on the KTM quickshifter. It's also great for steep slopes where you need another gear and don't want to lose drive/momentum. I am not sure why the S with optional Rally mode would be any different to the R in remembering settings between power cycling. Mine also remembers the last mode it was in. Maybe the S they tested didn't have Rally mode?
Steve Cade I have an S with Rally mode maybe that is the key... I spent about 3 days tearing up a little bit of woods behind my house. Cleared about 700 miles of the KAT (Kentucky Adventure Tour) mostly offroad tracks through KY, WV, VA, and TN and I’m extremely happy with the bike. Totally out performed a buddies 1090r in terms of off road capability. In love with the bike!
I don't know where these guys get their prices from, the T7 isn't £8k, Yamaha states £9k on their website, auto trader dealers state the same. Tenere 700 seems well over priced to me, when you think a brand new Tracer 700 can be got for £6,500. Different bikes I know but same engine and the only real difference is inverted (longer travel) forks, bash plate and spoked wheels. That's not 2 and a half grands worth.
@@chrisredfield3240 Yeah the BMW is a lot of bike for the price and not much more money than the T7. I was looking at getting the BMW or a Tiger 800 xrt, but found a good deal on a Tiger so I bought one.
@@applecorp even the new tiger 900 is around £9.5k i know they are heavier but. Still is it worth paying almost the same just to be a little lighter. Also on the road the extra weight really helps with stability
Those 3000 pounds difference bought me an additional season with lots of fun on the fantastic 790R. Had Yamaha been able to deliver in March this year with zero waiting time, most likely I had bought the T7.
This is an excellent video. It is very informative and entertaining, and the scenery is beautiful. I really like both of these bikes and as I've said elsewhere, both would slot nicely between my KLR and GS... :) Yamaha announced US pricing for the T700 - $9,999. Very attractive. If it ever gets here. For the testers: Did you experience any excessive engine heat on your backside or legs on the KTMs? Their bigger siblings are notorious for engine heat issues. Great video - thanks for posting.
Great and informative review. Anyway, the riding position of the standard 790 is completely wrong, IMO. Seems like when you try to close the door while sitting on the toilette. I love the lower position, but there is something wrong in the overall geometries. The handlebar is too narrow, and should be raised up of a couple of meters as minimum. I tested the standard and returned immediately back to the owner after 5 minutes. It is a total no-go for me. The T700 should be compared with the R version indeed, but the price difference would be too huge.
I don't like how all the channels are afraid to comment on the reliability of KTM. Let's be honest here, KTM is a nightmare of maintenance and reliability. Especially for people in the USA were dealer support and parts are harder to come by. Since the T7 shares the engine with the Mt07, you have more available parts and knowledge on the bike. There is not competition here. The T7 is the bike that will define dual sports for years to come.
current bike is a 390 duke (dual sport tires) and ive enjoyed it but ive been ready to buy 1 of these 2 bikes. This validated my desire to keep my ktm gear. 790 adv seems to check the boxes. great vid
Nice comparison; came out about the way I figured. KTM all the way for me. I may be in the minority in thinking that it looks so much better than the T700, which I find to be quite ugly. I won't brand-bash like so many others, but the T700 does nothing for me. I do more street than off road for sure, and tend not to get carried away on middle- and heavyweight bikes anyways, so an S might be in my near future. It will take me anywhere I want to go, and I have no doubts about reliability. I've owned 4 KTMs and none of them have had any issues. I'm down to one, my trusty 640 Adventure, which has been just amazing, but the 790 will make a better two-up bike for long trips and won't give up anything offroad. I'm not even worried that the motor is made in China. KTM knocked it out of the park with the 790 for me.
You should do the same test and compare the Yamaha Tenere 700 vs Husqvarna 701 Enduro LR or Husqvarna 701 Enduro with a "Rally kit" from Rade garage instead.
Thanks for the plug gents! Very kind of you.

We would have had even more of Mossy but his helmet camera mic failed - thankfully 😂
@@FortyFourTeeth HAHA
@@FortyFourTeeth How about a comparison t700 vs the original xtz750 & see
1.what yamahas teaser game was, &
2.is the t700 an improvement over what yamaha knew it already had... waaaay back in 89... its taken the rest of biker land 25 years to catch up... BUT... have they
So... WHAT was Yamaha stupid marketing game with its 2 year delay teaser... whats changed from the xtz
Been waiting for this head to head review
So, best comparative review I've seen to date!
I own both a 1290 Super Adventure and a 790 Adv R and the 790 Adv R is the bike I would have bought over the 1290 Super Adv had it been available in 2017
Most of my previous bikes were Yamaha, my first being a YZ125 when I was a kid, an XT500 when I was 18, then came the IT enduro bikes, Maico 490 Alpha 1, a TT600 and quite a few road bikes too..
When I test rode the 790 Adv "S" (non-R) at the dealer, I was impressed, this one had "RallyMode" enabled as well as the QS+ (quick shifter +) enabled and I was sold, but I wanted the 790 Adv R and ordered it then and there with QS+ and cruise control (I live in France and it's almost as bad as the UK with "safety cameras)
Then came the announcement of the T7, so I had to mull as to whether I should have bought another Yamaha or my 2nd KTM
I made the right choice, as you fine gentlemen said, the 790 Adv R is in a class of its own...
Why didn't do a rundown on the RallyMode electronics and did the 790 Adv R you rode have QS+?
Thanks for this video and I'll say it again... best comparative review to date!
ye really need your own tv channel always cheers me up
Al, have you tried leaving the key in the on position and using the kill switch instead when you're stop-starting on the KTM? It didn't used to reset the ABS on my SMCR this way, but would if I turned the key off.
was blooming waiting for this one
Is mossy standing on a log he looks taller than his normal 4ft 2"
Don't worry, he picked it up with his trusty fish slice afterwards.
Fantastic review guys!
its awesome to watch the arguements and guess where it is going- awesome work gents~
In Rally mode the settings stay when switching off/on
Great video chaps- keep up the good work
That gadgee. He cracks me up. Thanks lads - great test.
Bored and need some background moto vids while I'm spreadsheeting, rewatching old 44T vids and this vid just reminds me how much I love Mossy
Yep, won't be long before there'll be fork cartridges and shocks for the Tenere 700 in the aftermarket, solving any damping issues on rough stuff. That would jack the price about 1500-2000 dollars above purchase price, but that's still outside the price range of the 790A and 790AR.
This is a proper great review guys!!
Thanks for an brilliant review
What pricing are you saying the Yamaha is now. ?
Are they not now 9300
Great video - really enjoyed it. I seem to want every bike that appears in a 44T vid.......BTW - is that bike at the end the limited ed rally version? Akra can makes me wonder..if so, the suspension is even further upgraded over the ‘normal’ R ??
Thanks you two. Exactly what I wanted to know.
the contrast settings on your camera needs sorting
The best review ever. Regardless of what you ride, this is a must watch. Love mossy
Mossy is back, nice to see him up and around after his huge smash
bret tcaks said you dont have to reset the electronics.. why is that keep resetting?
Us yanks are still waiting for the T7 - Excellent video gentlemen!
Great review, love the Tenere cheers lads.
Where's Chris the 🐱? Al's struggling to get his words in again 😂.
Another great video chaps, makes my week watching your videos. Thank you.
Must be something different in the European version of the 790. Mine keeps whatever ABS/TC/throttle setting last used, even after shutting it off.
Anybody know what the tire sizes are? The Tenere's front looks so thin.
Thanks for the comparison review it’s really helpful! Just wondering whats the maximum cruising speeds for both the ktm and t700 without stressing the engine?

Great test. Love the KTM but hate (hate!) the styling. Really looking forward to the Husqvarna version...
I think all it needs is cover up the naked neck of the bike
Think without trying to dial in the suspension for one's weight isn't fair to say it's shite without stating what suspension is on each🤔
Cracking review lads
Another good video gents, thank you.
What if you buy the Yamaha and fit for 1 to 2 grand the suspension of the KTM R
Great stuff..good to see the Tenere is such a good bike. Yamaha HAVE increased the price to £9100 , still good value. By the way, I hear the people from the Oxford English Dictionary are including the phrase 'Rally Slag' in the next edition.....Cheers, Steve
Great Review you guys are hilarious being vertically challenged at 5:6 I understand your point of view of tall seat heights. We r still waiting for the Tenere here in 🇨🇦.
Just out of curiosity, does the Yamaha have adjustable suspension, and if so, did Al adjust it before riding?
Is the tenere a parallel twin? Thinking of buying a Tenere 660 XTZ or F800 GS
"If I had the money" Everything I have heard , read and watched now is pointing my back to the Tenere.
Shame you guys didn't elaborate on the options you can add to the KTM and how effective Rally mode is. Great comparison though. I got a chubby for the Adv R so I bought one. The up/down quickshifter is bloody marvelous offroad.
There was quite a lot we couldn't fit in - it was already too long really. But yes, agreed, the shifter and blipper are exquisite
Congrats! I hope to get one soon. What an incredible machine. KTM nailed it and all the rest will have up their game.
‘These guys’ get their prices from the manufacturers at the time of the shoot, which was only a few months ago.
@@FortyFourTeeth Fair enough, that's one hell of a price hike though in just a few months.
I would be looking at a bmw f850gs if the 700 is £9k the bmw is £9.5 seems like a lot more bike and 95hp and tubeless tyres
8:20 That can be a very dodgy situation to find yourself in when out trail riding...... Great video as always, keep up the great work.
Wheres bazza von grumble missing the dude
Those 3000 pounds difference bought me an additional season with lots of fun on the fantastic 790R. Had Yamaha been able to deliver in March this year with zero waiting time, most likely I had bought the T7.
Looking forward for a 390 adv review!
Any chance you can share the route with us? Thanks.
Absolutely impeccable B roll and banter.
Great review. I've just bought a standard 790 for £9500 new. Would have liked a 790R, but I'm Mossy sized, so it's just too tall for me.
Brand new? Blimey. That's a deal
@@FortyFourTeeth without VAT 😆
Yes, they are not selling and so discounted already. Some horror stories on them online
Could you guys do a new version of this, very curious what changed in 4 years.
Brilliant so enjoyable, two great characters and great chemistry between them.
Great video gents. What did you think of the Bridgestone AX41s on the road???
current bike is a 390 duke (dual sport tires) and ive enjoyed it but ive been ready to buy 1 of these 2 bikes. This validated my desire to keep my ktm gear. 790 adv seems to check the boxes. great vid
guys you are awesome ! I really enjoy it !
Damn, that's some proper off road testing!
i think some of the clips were posted before color correction
The little bloke is a classic. Keep him on. Laurel and Hardy on bikes.
"The little bloke" xD
Awesome photography
When are AC:DC back on tour?
Amazing marketing lesson.
Now I really want the new defender.
You should do the same test and compare the Yamaha Tenere 700 vs Husqvarna 701 Enduro LR or Husqvarna 701 Enduro with a "Rally kit" from Rade garage instead.
regarding the suspension of the Yamaha, does this description not just believe that they set it up for a lighter rider?
