- We're diving straight into another Ronnie James Dio masterpiece with an angelic performance from his aptly named band Dio. He wrote this song to show how selfish humanity is, taking place on another world, or another realm. I chose to watch the music video specifically for the visuals of the story taking place.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to the band Dio for the very first time, performing "Holy Diver”.

I did sing it. Even before I read Brian Sauer's reply.
“I hate it when songs by Dio end”
I think we can all agree Elizabeth
The only time it's a good thing when a Dio song is knowing the next one will start soon. :P
Exactly what i was thinking!
The endings are often the best part. That vocal riffing in the fade out is incredible.
Wasn't expecting to see you here, especially after the hiatus. Hope you're doing well and keep up the good work!
wait, has she seen Dio in the Pick of Destiny?????
The most powerful voice in metal. Never got the recognition he deserved. Years ago, I recognized him in a restaurant in Houston and tried hard not to bother him, but had to ask for an autograph. He graciously granted my request. I apologized for bothering him and started to walk away. He asked me if I was in a hurry and asked me if I would like to sit with him and talk. It took everything in me not to lose my mind! I managed to play it cool though. We proceeded to converse for 2 hours about life experiences and spirituality. He also told some hilarious stories about his grandmother. I learned he was in town because of his cancer diagnosis. All I did was listen as he went through his spectrum of emotions. Mainly anger at finally seeing success only to be derailed by his diagnosis. After a hug, we parted ways and I have never met a more beautiful spirit yet mighty force since. I cried for days after hearing of his passing. RIP RJD
Hermoso recuerdo.
Saludos cordiales.
Awesome !😊

Damn that’s a cool story man. Sad to lose such a talent and great guy. Thanks for sharing that
Lucky man meeting RJD
She said “I hate it when songs by Dio end”. It’s great to see that she feels the same way that we do. The man was a force of nature and an irreplaceable legend.
I just commented the similar thing on the other song of his a second ago, it's really a larger than life experience, hearing the god of heavy metal and the roar of his thunderous voice
As fantastic of an artist as Dio truly is, I feel as though the thing that made him truly legendary was his personality. The man was short in stature yet larger than life on stage, a living legend, yet there are countless artists and fans that tell of how kind and welcoming he was. He loved what he did and loved those that allowed him to do it, I mean his live proformance of rainbow in the dark where he calls his fans all his rainbows in the dark made me tear up as you hear the compassion in his voice. Truly a one of a kind and truly disappointing that ignorance allowed so many to believe he was spreading any message other than positivity in the community.
It's also delightful to hear a vocal expert and opera singer say of Dio "I LOVE his God-like voice!"
I love watching her face as she discovers music that has been my life for 40+years.
Awesome 👌
Exactly.
man im so autistic and it's hard for me to watch her. i can never tell if she's laughing at it or just having fun. if she likes something or if she's cringing at it. but i can't help but watch even though it makes me feel like that. people with overly animated facial expressions make me feel strange

I just love how our metal was considered not music in the day to finally get the recognition that dio and many others deserve is truly mind blowing to me
After all the shit we metalheads have had to put up with over the last 50 years, I'm glad I lived to see it finally be recognized.

I just finished watching the 2022 documentary "Dio, Dreamers Never Die" and I cried at the end. He was just an amazing person. He wasn't into metal for the girls, drugs, parties or money. He loved the music and loved entertaining. His voice and music will live on forever! 🤘🤘🤘
I watched it recently too. I also cried. He had integrity, and that seems to be severely lacking in a lot of people.
Im really looking forward to watching it.
I saw it, it was great.
Elizabeth is now slowly becoming a rock / metalhead and she's good
@nunya business yeah shes giddying all over the place
@@jimlotus4428 this is true.
This is an absolute classic, but I feel like ‘Don’t talk to strangers’ is a better display of Dio’s range and control over his imstrument. It’d make for such an interesting analyses
This song is about the catchy guitar riff and melody. It does not showcase Dio's vocals. There are so many better songs to choose from if it's just about vocals.
1983 live version from Holland though. Showcases his voice much more than the studio version
Thats true
“Don’t Talk to Strangers” is an overlooked classic, my second favorite Dio song
Invisible is also awesome.
Dio is a legend, and he shall be passed down through the ages as an immortal.
Dio dropping panties even 11 years after his "official death"
This would imply he has passed, Dio is simply hiding as it would be unfair to impart that much power in one lifetime.
His sauce will mix with ours and we'll make a good goulash!

Listen to Rainbow in the Dark, in fact just listen to everything, you won't be dissapointed 🙂
i say shame on the night. holy diver is the most popular song but by no means his best vocal performance... rainbow in the dark is my favorite song btw lol
Rock and roll Children.
Last In Line too please.
Children of the sea and die young by black sabbath are also great dio songs
Mob rules with sabbath too...
The church this was shot in is the St Mark's Church, Silvertown in eastern London. It was partially burned down a few years before the music video was shot. The good news is, it was repaired and is now a music venue, so you can definitely live your dream of singing there!
Designed by S. S. Teulon, the maddest of all Victorian Gothic revival architects... Silvertown is just so wilfully fuck-you ugly that one has to respect the sheer balls of those who originated and OKed such a wild design! St Stephen Hampstead (which also lay derelict for many years) is even wilder...

I wish Dio could see this. He always seemed a little sad that his influence on the genre's evolution rendered him to be left out of the conversation or forgotten in some way. He'd probably light up seeing this

@@takaorobinson8719 Are you English? Or British? Because it's hrd to understand your comment.
In Bruce Dickinson's autobiography, he mentions that at one point he tried to put together what he called "The Three Tenors of Metal", which would have been himself, Dio and Rob Halford. Sadly Bruce's manager didn't trust Dio's manager (his wife, Wendy Dio) and had Dio replaced with Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche. Unfortunately the chemistry just wasn't there and the project fizzled out. But can you imagine Bruce, Ronnie and Rob collaborating on an album? It would have been amazing.
That would have been awesome!
Dio, Rob and the guitarists of Iron Maiden were all on "Hear n' Aid", but not Bruce. I can only dream of a shot of Ronnie, Bruce and Rob singing "We're Stars" in unison.
Wow!!
That would've been epic.

This song is 100% responsible for the existence of jack black. It spawned him out of thin air.

Rainbow in the Dark. Lyrically inspirational but equally bad-ass. We both know it's only a matter of time before you enjoy another Dio
Rainbow in the dark my faves ,
Hell yeah!
Dude for sure. Bitchin song.
I had the pleasure of seeing him live both with Dio and Black Sabbath. Never Disappointed!🤘
What's strange is a memory you resurrected. I saw Joe Lynn Turner open for Pat Benatar years ago.
So lucky. I hadn't discovered him before he died :(
Lucky s.o.b.
Heaven and Hell tour I'm guessing. Was epic.
I am happy I managed to see Dio live at least once. My childhood was spent listening to Holy Diver, Last In Line and Dream Evil, over and over again. And drawing DIO logos on my school books. Not just as a kid. Some years ago, I painted digital, 3-D looking, versions of the DIO logo, just for myself, for no apparent reason. I've been meaning to have them printed on a coffee cup or a T-shirt or something. Maybe a decorative painting on my wall?
You should definitely go for “Don’t talk to strangers”
Agree with that 100% additionally going back to Sabbath days Children of the sea displays Ronnie's range very well
Probably my favorite Dio song
Rainbow in the Dark!!

@@DWyn-xq4yf Yes! Like when he told the people at his concert to stand up and get rowdy because they weren't home having a beer. Ha ha
I was fortunate enough to see Dio once in the mid to late 80's. He brought @ least a 20 foot 🐉 on stage that blew 🔥. It was a great visual to go along with his emotional voice. Ms. Charismatic seems to build more true admiration for his talents with every video. Great to watch her eyes open wide with her face filled with emotion when she couldn't believe the ending like she did with the Sabbath live video Heaven & Hell. She kinda reminds me of a cross of the 2 actors Jenna Fischer & Sofia Bush. Not bad company indeed.
The documentary about Dio's life is suppose to be released this fall. I watched the premier with Eddy Trunk and Wendy Dio. It shows footage of him singing in the studio. The movie is called Dreamers Never Die.😊🖤

Ronnie James was truly one of the nicest people I ever met, he just loved what he did and he was so down to earth. I could totally see him sitting down for a Q&A on this channel, he would've totally loved Elizabeth's analysis and appreciation for his work.
I can second that. He was a lovely guy.
I third this. I got the opportunity to meet him briefly in St. Louis, during their Magicka tour. He was just a great soul.
He's watching from above, and smiling.
I thought the same thing. He would've been delighted by her analysis.
@@rabarebra as far as I read/know that was his wife that treated the band members as replaceable pieces that are valuable only while they stayed silent and took what she/they offered to them as a payment. And I think Dio didn't want to argue with her as much as that'd have probably led her to act even more hastily at such times (I think the main reason for this was he didn't want to harm the charity stuff money making that she handled by taking a stance against her).
I don't think I know enough about them two to make these claims/statements with absolute confidence but it's my take on that.
Dio was an alien. He was one of those exceptional individuals that will make an impact for generations after his short time with us. He had a nearly total recall memory, was the most gracious and humble person to his fan base, raised many millions for charities, and then a natural perfect voice instrument that he was an absolute master at controlling. He never warmed up, he just owned that voice, one of those once in a generation type individuals and talents.
Very well said.
He probably did warm up. Given his reputation
@@Mizelei2012 actually a lot of first hand accounts confirming Dio did not warm up. Would be drinking some wine and smoking a cig backstage...and then it was time to go on...and he just went on. Iommi, David Draymon, others have confirmed this in interviews.

It’s good. That was my first Dio album, but I really feel it’s overall weaker and duller in writing than the Holy Diver album and I feel he reuses ideas from it. It’s just not as exciting overall.
However the song Mystery is way less repetitive melodically than the big single Last In Line which relies on the same 3 notes all the way through. Mystery even changes key in the 2 bars before the chorus. 💰 so much vocal and band melody. That’s just my suggestion for an episode... I may be in a minority?
Another ferocious song is Another Lie from Sacred Heart. Dio sounds PISSED OFF and as a result it’s a killer vocal.

Ronnie Dio and the Prophets??
@@andytwentyman9573 Same band as The Red Caps. I posted a video from 67, with the Prophets name being used, in it's own comment on this video. I had to look it up, not going to claim to know that when I didn't know, and I found an interesting review of the band -
Ronnie Dio and the Prophets was a rock and roll band from upstate New York. The original line up included Ronnie James Dio (vocals/bass), Nick Pantas (guitar), Dick Bottoff (guitar) and Tommy Rogers (drums). The name Ronnie Dio and The Prophets came into use in 1961 but all four members had previously performed as Ronnie And The Red Caps from 1960 to 1961. In fact, Dio, Pantas, and Rogers roots dated back to their high school band, Vegas Kings, that they formed in 1957. Ronnie Dio and The Prophets released several singles and a live LP, "Dio at Dominos", all now highly sought after artifacts for Dio fanatics. Rogers departed in 1965 and was eventually replaced by Gary Driscoll. Bottoff departed the following year and was replaced by Dio's cousin, David Feinstein. In the fall of 1967, keyboardist Doug Thaler joined and the group changed their name to The Electric Elves (later shortened to The Elves and, finally, ELF).

Metalheads: "All hail Dio the metal god!"
Elizabeth: "He has such a good H!"
His Hs are pretty good, but his Es are better
Linguistically, Hs are interesting since they are used so differently in many languages. Russian doesn’t use H, so they usually substitute K or G instead, Novaya Gollandaya for New Holland (a neighborhood in St. Petersburg). In English, we technically should use H more aspirated than what it is, more hinted at than pronounced, as “an” should be used instead of “a”. “An historical document” rather than “a historical document.” The hard Spanish J is really taken from the Arabic H rather than a Latin H. It’s also fun to here Brits and Aussies to pronounce the letter H since they say it more like “Huh-aytch” instead of the North American “aytch”
@@michiganscythian2445 err no, the Brits should say "aiych" but we are plagued by commoners. People that say "haitch" should be shot on sight.

Since you have such a strong reaction with this song, and how you have a similar reaction to Killswitch Engage, you may be tickled to know that Killswitch engage covered this song and it's phenomenal
Seconded
yessssss
I would love to see her review Killswitch Engages Holy Diver. I love their cover!
I came here to say this!
Im glad she did it! And her appreciation for the song was so great to see
Dio truly was one of a kind. Give "Children of the Sea" or "Ear in the Wall" from his time with Black Sabbath a try. Both are great
Ear in the wall? Sabbath what album
The dio years album
That "scream" transition early on in the live version of Children of the Sea, CRAZY!
Yes, ‘children of the sea’ is a great showcase for his voice.
Sorry, but the melodic voice of RJD was for me a misfit to black Sabbath, just because I loved Ozzy as leadsinger....later on I learned to appreciate his voice to the black Sabbath sound. As it became more familiar.but still could not see RJD apart from DIO. BUT STILL HE IS 1 OF THE TOP 10 VOCALIST IN METAL.....
“Don’t talk to strangers” should be next from this album. Also, the guitar solo is the bomb followed very closely by the drums. You won’t be disappointed. Please listen to the studio version first before live, that way you can hear all the nuances of his voice. My favorite lyric? “And I - am darkness. I’m anger. I’m PAIN!”
Thank you! You’re great at what you do!
yeah that's a song that he shows off his entire ability with.
Yep, that was one that I recommended also. It's Ronnie at his best. All the dynamics.
One of my all-time favorite Dio songs.
That song is one of my favourite Dio songs too. The live version from Spectrum '86 is just awesome 🤘
I was fortunate enough to meet DIO (and the rest of the band) backstage in 85’. A friend had a local cable TV show and he would do interviews with major bands when they came into town for a concert. I was a senior in HS at the time and the Holy Diver album was my favorite. As an artist I created an alternate album cover for Holy Diver and my friend gave it to DIO during the interview. DIO said he wanted to meet me and gave him backstage access passes. After the show we were escorted to a room (by Ronnie’s wife Wendy) where the entire band was eating and drinking with “guests”. Of course Ronnie had a long line of fans waiting to speak/meet him while he sat on a couch. My friend interrupted the line (because it was getting late and he was aggressive like that) and introduced me. DIO immediately shook my hand, asked me to sit with him on the couch and apologized to the rest of the people in line saying he “really needed to talk to me” then he started asking me specific questions about my artwork (so I knew he had looked it over thoroughly) and complementing me. It was a surreal moment. We spent the rest of our time talking and we even shared a little “smoke” that someone handed him...lol. After several attempts which Ronnie initially ignored, his manager convinced him it was time to go. We took several photos and he signed a tour book for me, which I still have. And I’m now 54. As a testament to RJD, he still asked about me, by name( wow ) a decade later when my friend interviewed him again. I had singed my name to the artwork. Great memory!!
Watching a beautiful woman get giddy over HolyDiver has made my day
How about a middle-aged man getting giddy over HolyDiver?

She always seems so genuine and has that wide eyed princess Leia vibe.
You should check out "Man on the Silver Mountain" from when Ronnie sang for Richie Blackmore's Rainbow. Great song and voice.
Second that.
From the Rainbow - Live On Stage album is my favorite version.
I think you would be impressed by Dio's "Last In Line".
I just came here to say this! Ditto on Last in Line!
"The Freddie Mercury of metal" - That's the absolute best description I have heard about Ronnie's voice, ever!
I'd like to disagree. Rob Halford is more like the Freddie Mercury of metal. Dio is just Dio, he has no synonym. Suffice to say Rob and Freddie are just as good.
@@dogeofgreatness2222That's totally OK! Dio as in "Cher" "Bono" or "Madonna", yeah I like that =) You know what all of these guys have in common? Artistry, stage presence and a whole lot of guts! I love it! =)
Ha!!! I always thought Freddie Mercury was the Ronnie James Dio of Rock... But what am I know!!!? 🤟🤷🏼♂️🤟
Freddie Mercury couldn't hold a candle to dio - especially live
Don't get me wrong I'm a huge huge huge queen fan, but Dio is a better singer, at least from a technical standpoint
@@lattelucks4924 Freddie could more than hold his own. Go and watch the Live Aid performance. That incredible performance was done when he was extremely sick, with growths in his throat.
Ronnie's voice never failed him, his physical body did
This made me cry a bit
Dio didn't die. He left the mortal realm to protect us from dragons and demons
He was a rock star in the '80s with the voice an angel......his body didn't fail him, it just couldn't keep up with the nonstop rockin
@@drsatanrx ….from dragons demons, and disco. 🤘🤪
Love Dio and all of the energy that all his songs not only hold but that they generate when you listen to them, that moment you are on the bus heading to work and holy diver comes on your headphones you become filled with energy. I would suggest to have a look at a band called liliac they did a cover of this song and its phenomenal they are a band of brothers and sisters who play music together but the vocalist is insanely talented
Rainbow Eyes is Dio at his most melodic, with some breathtaking use of head voice. I think you'd love it! I do.
there's more melodics sounds of him, but that's a must hear
I heard my local rock station interview Dio several years back. He was a big advocate for using voice coaches to prevent damage.
Get you a woman that looks at you the way this one looks at Dio when he pronounces those vowels.
I didn’t think I needed this in my life. Lol. I love your brilliant and edifying take on such iconic and timeless songs I grew up listening to. You being super stinking cute is just a bonus. I’m definitely a fan.
Stinking? Funny way to describe cute, don't you think?
Dio's father had him learn trumpet. He practiced 3 hrs a day. It's were he got his breath and pitch control. I mean, trumpet will really get your breathing and ears together if you really train at the instrument.
Which, he did.
Dio didn't sing. He was just telling us about his life adventures where he fought dragons and fornicated with fair maidens.
He has songs of wildebeests and angels
He has soared on the wings of a demon!
He was more of a biographer. Dude rode tigers under rainbows.
@@KTF0 in the DARK
But what about that time he was a huge fat frog in the butterfly ballroom?
Love Is All. That'd be a great song for a review too.
So true....this was from a time when men could be men
Black Sabbath : Falling off the edge of the wolrd.
Real good Dio vocals in that one.
Yep. Great vocals on that one.
"Man on the silver mountain" and "Mistreated" and "Catch the rainbow"plz!most passionate and fantastic examples of Dio's vocal range!
"Mistreated" oh hell yeah, and you can add "Still I'm Sad."
One of the best things about getting older is watching a new generation discover and enjoy the AWESOME music you grew up on. It's like discovering it anew. Keep it up!
Your facial expressions when listening to DIO is like a young girl. So adorable.
I regret to inform you that your compliment may have not sounded as flattering as intended.....

Lol, she is saying the same thing but explaining the "why" technical language. It is awesome that we took this sweet, innocent opera singer and turned her into a metalhead 😂😂 I love how she was sort of fangirling on Tati during their interview 😉
Edit: Her giggle when they launch into some good unclean vocals is the cutest thing ever.
🤣
“I Could Have Been A Dreamer”
...’Cause dreamers never die.
RIP
I love that song!!!
I fell in love with RJD when he was lead singer for Black Sabbath (Heaven and Hell being the song that did it for me). I was lucky enough to see him a couple of times in concert. His voice was just as clear and strong live. PLUS he was quite the showman. Whips that had a light changing feature. Mythical creatures around the stage. It was the total experience. BTW first time I saw him he was the opener for Aerosmith, the next time Whitesnake was his opening act.
There are so many more Dio masterpieces that will always amaze you. I vote for "Children of the sea" as the next one and then I would say "Dont talk to strangers" and "Shame on the night" live from 1983 concert if I remember well. (Would love to see you react to some Scorpions, like the classic "Still loving you")

This channel is my new jam. Watching Elizabeth listen and react to some of these classic rock and grunge songs (that are some of my favourites) for the first time is priceless. Also as someone from a classical background, she’s really into this genre - a rock chick at heart without a doubt! 🤘❤️
Not only is she cool, she's hot too! Sexy eyes!
One of my all time favorite songs. Been listening to it since 1983, and I still do from time to time. It's AWESOME!
Since you like the metal and the opera, the legend Sir Christopher Lee, who once considered a career as an opera singer and was known for his powerful voice, released a symphonic metal concept album about his ancestor Charlemagne a few years before his death. Could be fun for analysis...
did he not do some talking on (some?) Manowar songs?
@@cango5679 Orson Wells did Defender. Lee did some with the band Rhapsody.
@@cango5679 He sang on Rhapsody's Symphony of the Enchanted Lands 2. He narrates the backstory to the tale on track one, and then on track 9 - Sacred Power of Raging Winds (a very powermetally title btw) he summons a couple of angels to protect our heroes. After his summoning a great and quite menacing riff boosts us into the journey that is this song.
Also, Lee sings on the single version of The Magic of the Wizard's Dream from the same album. Check it out. The album has a different version though.

Ronnie James Dio has the greatest vocals in Metal history. This is undisputed. Even Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden said that.
uhm i think this is questionable. Metal has a f... long History, Hes good no doubt but i wouldnt give him this. No offence tho,, :) Everyone can have his own one at the top
Funny considering the first time I heard rainbow in the dark I thought it was iron maiden
I'd honestly say Freddie Mercury, dio and Bruce are on par, though Freddie didn't have the power of those two, the way he sung was just magical
@@davydod :D Oh.. i get this. I had soo many songs wrtong during the history haha
Ozzy wouldn't agree. 😄
You'd probably also like "The Last in Line" and "Rainbow In The Dark," also by Dio.
I got to attend an after show party with him once her in my home town and because it was a smaller venue it was more like a party than a sign and dash. When you hear people talk about meeting him being a profound experience, I can tell you it absolutely true. When he is in the room interacting with people you know and feel that you are in the presence of an amazing soul. It is almost magic. I only ever had that vibe with one other musician and that was Lemmy of Motorhead.
Couldn't agree more. I got to meet him once after a show in Australia & it was an incredible & emotional experience for all of us there. Such a great bloke to chat to - a superstar to be sure yet so humble. One of the greatest thrills of my life. Lovely to hear Elizabeth's appreciation of his wonderful talent.
W as Ritchie Blackmore there at this party ? 😂
Many years ago I got to see motor head and dio together in a tiny club called the yellow rose here in south Texas. Was amazing and I was too young to truly realize the magisty I was experiencing. Still remember dio at the front of the stage under a green glow singing his heart out. Lemmy was also truly amazing but seeing dio has stuck with me forever.
The sword is bigger than Dio, and the voice is bigger than both.
Great comment 👍👍👍! ! !
The only thing that could make this lady more lovable than she already is... is her genuine passion for Dio's music. The way her eyes light up... 🤯
One of my favorite things about classic music from Dio and Halford is that they sing the chorus everytime and add different inflections to let you know instead of sounding like its copied and pasted each time and it adds so much more energy
I would suggest Rainbow In The Dark by Dio. His voice is awesome in it
Another vote for Rainbow in the Dark.
The entire melody is 3 notes all the way through. But it is a pretty perfect song. I still feel that “Invisible” is a much better vocal showcase, but really the whole album is win.
