Thanks for the helpful video. I'm a tree surgeon and just to develop a couple of cutting tips: - When doing your under-cut with the saw, stop about a third of the way up through the wood, otherwise you risk removing too much strength from the branch causing it to lean down and pinching your saw. You may then crack the branch by trying to twist or bend it back off the saw blade. - When using anvil loppers, think of it like a saw: the blade side does the cutting, the opposite side merely braces the blade against the wood. Flip the loppers accordingly so the blade is cutting on the top side (the tension side) of the branch. This will give a much quicker, easier cut and again will avoid trapping the blade. All the best.
I use a saws-all for the big stuff because I'm a sixty year old woman but thanks for showing me how to prune my elderberries. Josh is cute. I know you are proud of having such a good son.
I love your son Rachel, such a fine lad! This made me nostalgic about mine when they were teens and used to help me out with the hard work and heavy lifting.
Thank you so much 😁 just received my rooted clippings and read to not prune for two years but wanted to know how to take care of my bushes/trees once the two years is up this was very informative
Central Texas zone 8b. My elderberries are Adams and York. They looked like yours but not quite as tall. I didn’t know I was supposed to prune them. Well today’s the day then. Thanks for the video!
How nice of your son to help you. It doesn't look like an easy job. I'm looking forward to seeing updates on these trees when they start to grow in the spring. :) You are having such a nice weather! We are covered by snow right now.
Such a FANTASTIC how to vid Rachel :-) and you guys have done an amazing prune on the Elder bushes :-) Thanks so much for sharing and sending heaps of love and happiness from Waterford to Wexford for a FANTASTIC Sunday XXXXXX
+Gardening at Douentza Haha, no problem. :D Buddleia is one of my favourite bushes, but now that it's not available anymore I changed my vote back to Forsythia.
I just planted one, how long did yours take to get that size? I don't think I would have the patience to rejuvenation prune that bush with a manual pruning saw, that job definitely calls for a chainsaw. Those were some thick stems!
Hi there. I just had a look through my videos and I never took a shot of the sambucus in the summer. But I can tell you that the one we cut very low grew enormous with fresh new growths! Thanks for watching.
@@GardeningatDouentza Do they produce much flower and fruit? Both can be used for making delicious Cordials and wine. Would be great to see them in flower and in Autumn to see the fruit.
Loved it and love those trees do you use the berries to make Jam or jellies ? Also do you take the dormant woody cuttings and try to get them to root ?
Fantastic video, mine is six years old and we really haven’t done any real pruning on it, it has three main trunks growing out of the bottom, none would be considered the main trunk from what we can see, we are afraid to cut any of them because we think the tree would look very lobsided, what do you suggest
February???? It would be May here in Canada. What are your lowest winter temperatures in Ireland? Do you have ample snow and how long are your winters? What zone are you in?
Yes, Canada is a lot colder than Ireland. We don't use hardiness zones here but our climate equates to about US hardiness zone 9 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Ireland
I pruned my black lace tree in February this year. I used loppers and cut back just above buds, on larger branches. There was fresh growth on the smaller branches but i cut all that back, just leaving larger more established branches. Im a bit concerned that it wont grow back. How long would you expect it to take before new growth starts from buds on the larger branches I cut back to? Thanks
Hi there, I love your video. I have a Elderberry for about 3 years, and this year only 1/3 if the benches have leaves to come back. I am not sure if the rest of the tree die or not. The bulbs on the stems look dry, do you know what happened to the shrub?
To check if a branch is dead, scratch the surface with your nail or a sharp knife. If green appears then the branch is still alive. If it is brown then it is dead and the branch should be cut off. Cut back to green. If you cut off the dead branches then the live part of the tree will need to expend less energy and will do better. Good luck.
+tina jordan I remember that well. It was so funny when you came back with it :) I loose my felco several times a week but up until now it always finds its way home. Touch wood!
Better and simpler. Your bush is not nice of growing model; difficult to harvest berries. However, the roots are full grown. Cut it off ar groundlevel; totaly. In winter. It will then run out, straight up from the ground. In August will be carrying fruits and it will be 2 meters minimum. And easy to harvest

Okay, thank you 😊
Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you. And I'm so sorry for the loss of Josh. 😢
Yes, I am sorry too. Thank you
Thankyou, second year running I have used your video when pruning my elder bush. Very clear and suited to my strength level.
Glad to help
Great thanks, I've put this job off for years. Mine 'Black Lace' is enormous, a tree! Wish me luck!
A good time to get to it 👍😁
@@GardeningatDouentza much easier than the hibiscus I pruned the following weekend!

+Georgina Rodríguez It all changes so quickly. Yes, we need to enjoy them while we have them :)
This have been so helpful. I’ve just got some trees and am learning how to prune them. Thank you!
You are very welcome. Often it's good to see how things are done, rather than just reading instructions. Have a great day.
Thank you, I need to prune a Sambucus this weekend, I'm confident to start it now I've watched your video :)
Good that you are confident. Be confident! I bet yYou will prune your sambucus beautifully!

Such an easy and rewarding bush. I am glad you found the video useful and wish you much success.
whewww!!pruning is hard work. I would have to get me a 9 volt battery operated jig saw. Thanks for sharing and happy pruning..
+SHARON SHORT Ha ha. That would come in handy. Thanks for watching.
Its my life saver. Yum! :-)
Thank you! Great video....hi from Canada
Hello to Canada and thanks for watching.
Very helpful video, looks like I'll have to wait til next spring to get busy with our overgrown tree.
Glad it was helpful!
This is exactly what I was looking for - thank you. Hopefully I can now do it as well as you did
It's the right time. You will do a super job I'm sure!

Thank you so much for this video. It was just what I needed.
You really should try the Silky saws. These are fenomenal💪🏼
Oh nice, I could change my vote to Buddleia. :) Very nice video as usual.
I remember it's always nicer to have company and help in the garden.
+Bumblebee I see people are voting for buddleia but unfortunately I've done that pruning for the year already. Silly me :P
+Gardening at Douentza Haha, no problem. :D Buddleia is one of my favourite bushes, but now that it's not available anymore I changed my vote back to Forsythia.
+Bumblebee Okay then. Forsythis needs pruning after flowering so that won't be immediately :)
Pruning after flowering - already learned something. :)
Oh Josh!!! Rest In Peace bud. ❤️
Thank you, Christopher. You are one of the people who remember and for that I am grateful. Take care, you!

I think you should prune for appearance.
Will the older trunks air-layer?
Propagation is by softwood or hardwood cuttings

You should expect to see new growth by now. If buds have been damaged or a branch has died back then the bush should reshoot from lower down.
Hi, really nice video. Do you get much flowers and fruit off the two Elder bush's? Both are great for homemade cordial and wines.
Thanks for watching. Yes, we make jam from the elder fruits in autumn.

+tina jordan Thanks, Tina. Well the secateurs is felco, the loppers is Aldi/Lidl and the saw was my mother's. I obviously display brand loyalty :D

Which month is this you did the pruning?
This was done in February but March is fine too
Remove the branches from that larger base cuts to get the weight off and help prevent splitting.
What month did you prune this and did it come back ?
The pruning was done in February, as I said at the beginning of the video, and, yes, both trees regrew beautifully.
You did. I am a fool. Thank you

Yes, this is an option. However, it can require machinery to cut sambucus to the ground and then there is the problem of what to do with all the wood.
Good day ! Yo ! Grow more plants!
