Grip strength has been a weakness of mine while doing pull ups. Started doing dead hangs each time I left my room since I have a pull up bar attached to my door frame. Up to 50 second holds now :D
I don't consider my grip strength to be a weakness, it is optimized for the physical activity I'm doing which means I am being as efficient as possible. I have no reason to have any more muscle than I do currently because that would decrease the efficiency of the overall system with little or no benefit. Thank you.
Yes - good advice. Dead hangs not only improved my grip strength but importantly got rid of my shoulder impingement. I was in chronic pain from over-developed deltoids relative to the weaker smaller rotator cuff muscles. Dead hangs (passive and active) strengthened my shoulders in a balanced way and I have no more pain. First time I tried dead hangs, I could only manage 10 seconds. Now I do them in every work-out (3 or 4x, and have worked up to a 150 seconds).
Hanging is fantastic for back issues. ( Also, upside down if you can find suitable equipment ) Learnt this exercise from Taoist alchemy training. The minimum target was 40 seconds hanging then rest for a minute - repeat 3X. This also improves tendon strength that will stay with you longer than muscle strength if you happened to stop exercising for any particular reason. Superb exercise that is seriously overlooked. Also, try to get good form when hanging in regards to being calm and breath control.
Wow I guess my grips did improved without me noticing it. I do pull ups using the wood bridgings in my house because I don't have a pull-up bar . It is challenging because the wood really hurts my hands overtime and them being not easy to grip
How would these be incorporated into our routines though? My forearms always seem like the weakest link and the most exhausted muscle after a workout, because of this I feel they also need more rest. If my main exercises are limited by grip, then it's not possible to just add more grip work at the end of my usual routine.
Do it at home, or invest in some form of grip trainer you can take to work. Do it on your rest days, or if on the same day, try to do it as far apart from the rest of the workout. E.g. workout in the morning, grip training before bed. Or vice versa.
My struggle is not my grips but my calouses are getting really painful every time I go on the bars. I mean I do see to them (file and moisturise) but they are progressively getting really painful

i couldn't do 1 pull up aur chin up and starting dead hanging and active hangs for 6 days and was able to do my first pull up.... and also when i started i was able to hang for 38 sec but now 90 sec with eazz
I tried to do dead hang but always when i do it. It instead make my hands hurt then training them. Is there a solution for this? Or should i continue to strengthe my hands through pain?
I'm currently doing your level 1-program. How can I implement this in my scedule? How many sets should I do? Should I just add 3 sets of maxtime at every end of a trainingsession? I can hold myself for ~80 seonds. I want to improve for my climbing/bouldering.
Yeah a few sets at the end of the training is a good option. Since you already able to hold yourself for 80 seconds i woiuld try towel and/or one arm deadhangs too.
I have a pull-up bar attached to my room's door, I can barely hang for 7seconds. I hope I can someday increase it to 30s with perseverance and consistent hanging
I've been going to the gym for years, but only recently started doing hangs. I don't know why, but they are a lot harder than I assumed. I could only manage about 40 seconds on my first go, and it's taken me weeks to get over a minute.
My left hand always got the perfect grip right from the start.. my right hand on the other hand..(literally on the othet hand) Also, for wrist stability i found sphinx pushups on my fists to be helpful. It's a custom made exercise and i got no idea if it's safe.
Do you have advice for doing dead hangs properly to avoid injury with stretchy joints? I feel like the idea of a dead hang is to be muscularly engaged to keep the joints in place, but I'm not sure exactly the proper muscle activation pattern, or if doing it that way negates the "decompression/stretching" aspect of the hang altogether and there's a better approach.
In my workout routine, I have to do Bent knee raises for abs but i am never able to complete it before my arms give out not my abs so I switched them out with dead hangs so i can hang a little longer to complete the exercise lol
Its called deadhang for a reason, not active hang. Hanging with shoulder elevation AKA touching your ears you can also tilt your pelvis and get a very good lat stretch
