Juditha Triumphans

- First off, Juditha and Adria are both poetic names for the Republic of Venice.
This one was made by Vivaldi to celebrate the victory at the siege of Corfù, but I believe it fits well to celebrate the victory at Lepanto as well.
On 7 October, 1571, the fleet of the Holy League - a joint military force of the major Catholic powers in Southern Europe - met the way more numerous Turkish Navy in the Ionian Sea.
Led by Admiral John of Austria, Doges Sebastiano Venier and Augustino Barbarigo of Venice, Gianandrea Doria of Genoa and spiritually supported by Pope Pius V, who ordered all able men and woman from Europe to pray the Rosary at the time of the battle, we managed to win, sealing the Turk's coffin.
If Vienna's siege stopped them on land, Lepanto stopped them on sea.
And it is because of these men that we managed to secure the existence of Catholic Europe and the fall of the Crescent, to happen three centuries later.
I dedicate this song to my great-great-grandfather, the poet Count Leandro Borin da Padova.
The Lion of the Sea will rise again.
Lyrics:
Salve invicta Juditha formosa
Patriae splendor spes nostrae salutis.
Summae norma tu vere virtutis
Eris semper in mundo gloriosa.
Debellato sic barbaro Trace
Triumphatrix sit Maris Regina.
Et placata sic ira divina
Adria vivat, et regnet in pace.

Don't forget the two sons of Charles V: Philip II and John of Austria. Each were staunch defenders of Catholicism. At one point contemporary sources said Philip was 'more Catholic than the Pope'. ANAUÊ!
Venice had hundreds of dodges as the title could be bought, so everyone from Veneto think they had a noble in their lineage, principally bcs some of their lastnames are still common nowadays, Trevisan, Furlan, Bassan, Lazzari, this is only some of my relatives lastname, ofc we will have a noble at some point with these lastnames as well 😂
@@limao6880 Incorrect, there were only 120 Doges of the Republic of Venice in its history. It was prior a vassel of the Eastern Roman empire. The title was never BOUGHT, they were elected, first by the populace then it passed to the Senate. The noblews of Venice had a long history based upon the foundation of the Republic. There were times when very affluent individuals were permitted to acquire nobility. No one could claim patrician status unless their name was documented in the registry of the "Book of Gold" from 1315 to 1797. The Republic was ruled as an aristocratic oligarchy by only 20 to 30 families of Venice. The original oligarchy was comprised of just 12 families.

Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote fought in that battle. He defended the galleys of the enemy boarding in a small boat and received two shots. One in the chest and one in the left hand, leaving it crippled forever. That gave him the nickname "El Manco de Lepanto" (The one-handed from Lepanto).
I may be a monarchist at heart, but I will always mourne the death of La Senerissima, it truly was a phenomenal country. It should have been re-established after Napoleon's defeat.
If that is hard for you to accept, guess how difficult it is for us Venetians: with the treaty of Campoformido, Napoleon - the bastard - took everything he had stolen and the rest went to Austria. Half Europe was probably waiting to get its hands on the land and wealth of the Most Serene Republic. That also explains why Venice was never invited to the treaty of Vienna after Napoleon had fallen. Since then we've been enslaved by Austrians first and Italians later: the winged lion, though, will rise again!

The man on the left is Marco Antonio Bragadin, who was in charge of the defence of the port city of Famagusta during the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus. The Ottomans had to besiege Famagusta for about a year before being able to capture it. When Bragadin was captured he was tortured and skinned alive.
This delay of the Ottomans in the Mediterranean bought the Western powers time in order to build a big enough fleet that they would later use in the battle of Lepanto.
As a Greek Cypriot I salute Bragadin who died for the freedom of my land 🇬🇷 🇨🇾 🇮🇹
Nope the man on the left is quite similar to Bragadin but it is Sebastiano Venier, one of the victorious Admiral of Lepanto together with the man on the right, El capitano generale da mar of the Venetian Fleet, Agostino Barbarigo. Although his galleys were victorious, he was mortally wounded by a turk arrow in the eye. They were depicted by Jacopo Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese. We Venetians have great respect for Bragadin; we will never forget him. I am glad that he is also remembered on the island he gave his life to defend.
