I will never forget the Sunday afternoon my 13 year old sister and her friends bought this 45 when I was 9 in 1970. They played and danced to it for two straight hours, and I've never gotten tired of hearing it. It was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. It was originally on the Miracles 1967 album, "Make It Happen." Smokey was set to leave the Miracles before it was released as a single, and its success led him to stick around until 1972.
Loved this! I was born in Detroit/Motown almost 60 years ago... And classics like this bring back fond and unique memories from childhood. Funny that when my family moved out west to Arizona later in the early 1970s, Mowtown also moved to LA as well and there it died...Such a great reaction as always, well done Enoma! 😎😎😎
This is my all time favorite song by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles from the time I was a little boy! I can relate to this song, because I had a lonely & unhappy childhood with very few friends!
My Mother used to take my twin sister and me to the Circus every year for our birthday every year for our birthday when we were young. Memories I'll never forget. Off topic for the meaning of the song, I know, but a walk down memory lane just the same for me.
Stevie Wonder gave a demo to Smokey Robinson that was this as an instrumental.. Smokey did the rest by adding the lyrics.. One of my all-time favorites. The English Beat also does a great ska infused cover of this song. The story is basically a man nursing a broken heart but he feels he has to hide it all and be a clown. Pagliacci is also a character from an opera.. in which he is part of a trio of clowns but finds out the other two; his wife and brother are having an affair and at end kills both of them. Happy stuff, right?
Nobody as Smooth as Smokie with that MOTOWN Sound!

An all-time R&B | Top 40 masterpiece! It sounded so good on Big 89 WLS.
i'd luv to hear that voice w/ a rock sound behind him. such a unique vocal style (and i didn't know he wrote all those great hits! ...
I really enjoy this song...Very smooth and pleasing to the ear
the Motown sound at its peak
The song was brilliant with the circus-like melody interjected in the refrain.
Awesome reaction from the best!
Great reaction once again 👍

Grew up with this song
When they decided Elephants were being abused the circus died without the Elephants.
Smokey reminds me of a young Michael Jackson.
I can't say for certain, but it is highly likely that Smokey was one of MJ's influences. I hear what you're hearing, too.

thank you
English Beat did an excellent cover of this. You can't out-smooth Smokey, but I like the overall track even better.
