    When Letterman asked a dying Zevon what advice he had for viewers, Warren said "enjoy every sandwich." This video, with it's brilliant trip down memory lane, makes us all appreciate, with time's relentless passage of time, the incredible music that has been a part of our lives. Thanks, Mazzy, for helping us enjoy every meaningful album in our collections.

    1974, 18 year old hard rock kid, left butt hole new york for Arizona. I was driving across the desert, when I spotted six jet planes, leaving six white vaper trails across the bleak terrain. I was standing on the corner of Jerome Arizona, it's a girl my lord in a flat bed ford. It's a lazy day. Burrito brothers, Byrds, eagles, amazing rhythm aces, brown, dylan, band, django, gabor zabor, and joni mitchel. Arizona opened my ears to jazz,blue grass, folk, country. I have most of the records you talked about. Great video, brings back memories.

    Warren Zevon and Tom Waits have become my favorite Asylum artists as I've aged. I think its because they both have a sense of humor, and they both can sympathetically portray the sadness of some folks.

    This was a great episode man, thank you.
    I loved Excitable Boy but really only got into Warren Zevon after reading I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, the biography by his ex-wife. Yep, talk about flawed genius.
    Tom Waits version of Somewhere is sublime. Completely repurposes and elevates the source. Jeez, I must have something in my eye (sniff).
    Cheers man.

    great segment Mazzy. I remember watching a PBS "American Masters" feature on David Geffen and after that I kind of always had my eye on records from Asylum, not just the individual artists. Some great albums that you can still find dirt cheap in good condition. the Sad and Sinister 70's...

  • @johnhpalmer6098
    @johnhpalmer6098 2 года назад +3

    So glad you mention the Eagles as I happen to like them and many of their hits and are such an iconic sound of the 70's in my estimation, them and Fleetwood Mac, yes they were on different labels, but both are synonymous to the 70's, most especially the mid to late 70's.
    I have One of these Nights, Hotel California and the Long Run and Eagles Live that a buddy gave me many years ago, the rest I got from the Goodwill around 15-18 years ago when you could still find good records at the Dearborn store in Seattle. Bought a bunch of stuff at that store in the early 2000's to about 2006 or so and the occasional record or so after that as the good stuff more or less dried up.
    Rumours smacked it out of the ballpark for dang sure, but love It's a Mystery to Me and their self titled LP's as well. One of my favorites form Mystery is Hypnotized. First heard it on the radio in the 90's and loved it's bluesy feel. Back to the Eagles, agree, the tracks One of these Nights, and Lying Eyes are both most excellent songs and should be on most everyone's playlist for the 70's, with Hotel California, Life in the Fast Lane, and the Long Run, along with In the City, and Heartache Tonight from that album, but it is all good.
    Other songs from Fleetwood Mac I love most especially from this period are, Over My Head, and Say you Love Me from their self titled and the two songs from Rumours the most, Dreams and You Make Loving Fun. Anyway, I can see why some may dislike the Eagles, but I think they were great.

    I bought the Blue Valentine album by Tom Waites, taped a copy, and sent it to my girlfriend who was at college, with a gushing review handwritten on Basildon Bond paper... she played it to her college pals, I don't think the girls got past Toms growling version of 'There's a Place For Us' I think they would have preferred David Essex! So, FYI, "Midnight Flyer" on that Eagles album was written by the late Paul Craft, a great songwriter (RIP). It's not a Randy Meisner song, but a Paul Craft song. Carmelita what a great song. Linda Ronstadt’s version is one of my favorites. Dwight Yoakum does a fantastic version. Leland Sklar has such a great channel. I love when he plays with a recording on his channel. Don’t you wonder why Poco , with their harmonies, wasn’t better received. jD Souther I always liked. I agree with you about Linda Ronstadt doesn’t get her creative due. The Prisoner in Disguise album cover was done by John Kosh , I think. I like Heart Like a Wheel but I kinda of lean to Hasten Down the Wind, love hearing Rivers of Babylon. Lo Siento Me Vida a great song. It was written by her father. You should listen to her album, Live in Hollywood. So different than her studio album. I think Kosh arranged almost the rest of her album covers. I think. You can correct me if I’m wrong. I lost count of how many of the featured albums that are also in my collection. I graduated in '76 and do not stray far from the 70's for my music today. Ashamed to say, I have few Joni Mitchell albums, but Hejira still amazes me with each playing. The Eagles were later embarrassed with the whole cowboy thing of Desperado, but it’s my favorite. There was talk of making a film around the story. Their tune ‘Hotel California’ is probably the most overplayed song of all time. One could equate Linda Ronstadt with Frank Sinatra as among the greatest interpreters of songs. The pieces they choose and record become definitive. Great show today.

    • @johnhpalmer6098
      @johnhpalmer6098 2 года назад +1

      Agree that the song Hotel California was a bit overplayed some at times, but I find it still holds up really well all these years despite that, and the entire album was really, really well recorded, especially on a more than decent system. I can play that song on my system and the bass can hit rock bottom after the acoustic guitar intro, then the kick of the kick bass drum hits before the song really begins is visceral, and that's on vinyl too.

    Laura Nyro was to be Asylum's first signing, but she decided to stay with Columbia which broke Geffen's heart because she was his best friend and he considered her the greatest artist on the planet. In 1969 Geffen received over $2 million from the sale of Nyro's publishing. Jackson Browne was Nyro's support act and boyfriend 1970/71. All this and more is in the documentary Inventing David Geffen, where Nyro features heavily. Judee Sill ended up Asylum 's first signing. Nyro was Geffen's first artist under management and her genius set up his future success.

    Jackson Browne's "These Days" on her 1967 "Chelsea Girl" debut album should be the earliest release of the song, not a real cover version. Browne (uncredited) is even accompanying her on guitar on that recording if I got things right. The duo of young Browne and Nico were doing Club gigs for a certain time. Kind of Nico's early post Velvets career.

      No one covered These Days like Jackson's good friend, the great Gregg Allman! RIP..

    A great subject for a video - but the "Asylum"-albums that really counts for me are Judee Sill (2) and David Blue (4)

    There’s a great Geffen Documentary on Netflix, talks about how Asylum was created with artists in mind retaining as much freedom and creativity as they could. Very unique for a label at the time. Hope to see more reissues from Mofi or AP of these artists personally. Not nearly enough Linda out there. At least the Eagles are in progress and Warren Zevon is getting the treatment soon. Tom Waits and Jackson Browne would be killer.

      It's good, but it totally omits Judee Sill who was David's first artist signed to Asylum.

    Actually, Werewolves of London is about the 1970's and what the hippies had become/were becoming. Unusual insight into the LA rock thing itself, forewarned of disco and Ronald Reagan.

    I had a friend who SUPPLIED Berkley with Peyote from about 1958 tille 1968 or 9!
    .... My buddy gave me the Last of the Peyote before I got drafted, but I'm scared of drugs other than Pot. ....
    I should have never read Junkie (at 13) by William S. Burroughs 1st book. I never had bad habit drinking or even kids daring me to try bad drugs... except for Pot.
    Story, you won't' read, but I'm writing. A person I knew who lived on the other side of my Tracks because he was 'Mexican American' and I were known in town as the most Crazy Beatle Freaks. We met because we both were racing to get the latest release and the lady who own the record store told us both about it.... not knowing the other existed.

    Despite some good records, rock's move to LA in the 70's ultimately proved disastrous.

    • @mazzysmusic
      @mazzysmusic  2 года назад +1

      Not sure it was a disaster but there sure was a lot of coke. The punk scene soon changed that in London New York San Francisco and LA ✌🏼
