    Never understood why people always try to compare the Maverick to a full-size truck when it's not comparable in price or size. . . It's not meant to compete with someone that needs to haul a 12,000lb trailer for their hot-shot towing business or whatever. It's meant to compete in the family car / crossover market to offer some extra utility at a great price without sacrificing fuel economy. And for that I think Ford hit the nail on the head for exactly what the market wanted and to meet 99% of daily needs.

    • @NickyNicest
      @NickyNicest 2 года назад +15

      Yep you said it perfectly. No one ever said it does compete with full sized trucks so not sure why truck enthusiasts all want to make that comparison. Never mind the fact that the majority of truck owners don’t even need a truck.

    • @ShaneWelker
      @ShaneWelker 2 года назад +16

      Exactly, I have a '23 on order and it's not because I have to haul a ton of stuff. It's because I need to haul some small stuff every once in a while that I don't want in the actual cab (fertilizer, wood, etc) The 40ish MPG just makes it a no-brainer.

    I bought one and had it shipped to Germany. I love it and the gas mileage. The size is SOOOOO perfect in Europe! The parking spaces here are way smaller than in the US, so again this is perfect in Europe. I have a wife and 2 kids at home and 2 kids in College, and for us now, this is what I take on vacation locally and in the Alps. There is a dealer hear that does the services, and all is good. I see a lot of those critics who appear to be insecure in their truck manhood; they drive spotlessly waxed trucks (lifted, of course) with huge tires, waxed beds, ultra-bright LED headlights, shiny dressing on the tires, always driving at least 20 over the posted speed limits. The closest they go to offroad is parking in a grass field at an outdoor concert.

    Nice review of the maverick. One thing that I would add is when you drive up hills or over mountains the ecvt works really nice even with cruise control. No crazy downshifting and engine sounding like it'll blow up like with regular transmissions. The engine does rev up a little but doesn't sound too extreme.

    Thanks for getting the description of the eCVT right. It is less of a transmission than it is a means of merging the power output of the ICE and electric motors; its operation in reverse is particularly tricky. Ford really needs to find a new marketing moniker for it.

    • @h8GW
      @h8GW 2 года назад

      I watched a video about a Toyota eCVT that flew over my head, but the important part is that I learned there were NO BELTS inside that could wear down and slip and it was all gears.
      The best I could understand was it used the electric motor to variate the input-output ratio of a planetary gearset.

    I’ve found most of the time when big trucks pull into gas stations the people that climb out are actually smaller in height and stature than the average person. The truck and bed are clean like they’ve never used it for it’s intended purpose. Seems to me the only reason they bought it is there insecurity. When they drive a big truck it makes them feel bigger until they get out again, then it’s back to reality. From your Maverick reviews I’ve ordered one and will use exactly as you’ve described.

    I also purchased a 22 XL. (I added 4 options, being the full size spare tire, trailer hitch receiver, bed extender, and the center console vault, the last of which is the only thing I would caution against.) Most compelling vehicle on the road today. Cheaper than a Civic, yet it's a hybrid, 5 passenger truck with a 1,500 lbs tow rating. Thought Ford was silly to end cars, but if they can do this with a truck, I guess it wasn't so silly after all! That said, I'd have to pony up the $2k for the XLT for cruise control. I can give up a lot, but not that.

    Also had my XLT hybrid for a month (after waiting a year and 10 days) and concur with Sam. Handles great, drivetrain is silky smooth, and the bed easily carries 4x8 sheets of plywood with the tailgate half-open for support. With ratcheting tie-downs I can load and secure my bike in about 2 minutes. My wife is surprised by how much she likes it, and may cancel her ID.4 order to share the Mav. I think that the compact and midsize truck market has been way underserved for many years. For a good part of my needs a compact like this would work great. However, I do occasionally tow over 5k lbs. So a compact just wouldn't cut it. Also of note is another reason I like the 1/2 ton I bought is for the comfort and roominess. For short trips around town I prefer my Tesla as it makes more sense but there is nothing like a road trip in a big comfy truck. If I could only have one option and was on a limited budget I would probably go with a compact truck like the Maverick but maybe not the base model. Your videos are entertaining thanks.

    I've had my hybrid maverick for about 4 months and put 4k miles on it, We love it except for low speed braking issue. The easiest way to reproduce the issue is to pretend you're at drive thru and there are 10 vehicles in front of you. Then take you foot off the brake and allow the truck to go forward about a car length. Wait about 30 seconds and repeat the foot of the brake and rolling forward about a car length. If you have the same issue the pedal will begin to travel further to stop and sometimes produce a jarring clunk of various intensities. When I took it my dealer they had to get Ford engineering involved and engineering decided it wasn't a safety concern because they were able to reproduce the defect in other hybrid mavericks. I was puzzled by their response because I would consider any defect in the braking system would be considered a safety issue.

I loved the original mini trucks back in the 70s and like this as a very good option for those that live in the city/urban heavier traffic/population areas vs the large parts of the country where 2 stop lights are an inconvenience.

    My Ford Ranger 2002 is nearly 21 years old, and since being retired for 10 years now, I only drive less then 3,000 mile a year mainly in town driving. So, I'm ready to buy something and I do haul a little like bags of yard soil, mowers and snow blowers, bags of salt for my 100' driveway winter maintenance. I think I'm all in for getting a Maverick, and I do like the extra you did to yours. I like that side color graphics you had done especially. Good luck.

      Based on a chassis review video I just saw, I don't think it's built to last anywhere near as long as the Ranger in our winter salt climates.

    Great follow up review. I ordered my Maverick Hybrid in September and I just got a build date for it. I'm hopefully going to get it before Thanksgiving. I also wound up getting my truck in Area 51 like yours since I liked the color a little more than Cactus Grey.

    Hey, if I remember right the base curb weight of the Maverick XL is something like 3,700#. There was a motorhome produced for several years that had a built-in office desk as an alternative to bunk beds for the grandchildren. The GCWR of this motorhome was 33,000# which meant it only had a 3,500# dinghy towing limit which puts us outside the jeep wrangler dinghy towing limit even for a stripped-down sport model, even if I remove the back seat and go with the cloth top. Since we don't do any serious off-roading anymore, if I was willing to give up 200# of the motorhomes' OCCC (Occupant Cargo Carrying Capacity) of 3,450#, that makes it easily within range of using the Maverick Hybrid FWD as a Dinghy since for 2022 that combination was listed as GOOD for 4-wheels down towing. The reason that design works is I can carry a couple of spare 20# propane tanks in the bed of the truck and equipped with a hitch receiver I can tow my 25-gallon Blueboy black & gray waste tank at idle speed down to the campground dump station AND carry the Blueboy empty in the back during our RV trip, something you would not have room for in the 2-door jeep anyway. Win-Win. If I still need the jeep, there are plenty of rental places at all of the tourist places where you can take it out for the day. Thanks for the review!!! -Dave

    Your message at the end about insecure dudes calling the Maverick not a real truck was perfect. My dad was daily driving a sh*tbox Toyota T100, hauling tools and lumber on that little thing for his jobs before he finally got a commercial truck with all those compartments on the side. The Maverick is a vehicle that many people have been asking for including me, and when they're finally readily available and dealers aren't marking them up, I'm gonna get one of these bad boys.

    I liked your preachin Sam and you're right. I bought a 2006 Honda Ridgeline back in Jan. 2006 and have loved it and did many 'you can't do that' truck things with it (pull stumps hauled loads of oak logs etc) If I was buying now - and I may for my son - this is what I'd buy. In fact I may order a 2023 XL with the Co-Pilot 360 for him now. Also your video is the first ive seen where you actually tested the hybrid. Everyone else seems to test the 2.0 eco-boost. The hybrid is the one! In 2 wheel drive it'll probably get everywhere on the road with FRONT wheel drive. Normal pickups (I've had those too) in 2wd mode unloaded always peel-out or spin the rear tires easy because the back end is too light to get any good traction - even in light snow. If your not trying to do that it can be frustrating. Not true with FWD.

    Great ending. I went to the Ford dealership back in 2012 to look at a Ranger. The salesman said, sorry Ford no longer sells Rangers in the US. He said Amercans want bigger trucks. I said, well I'm American. Fast forward ten years.

    I find it interesting that some people have a host of issues with the limited tech package, and others can count on their hand the number of times they had any issue with bluetooth, etc. So I wonder if there was a bad early batch or something.

      Wouldn’t be surprised. I‘Ve seen videos showing that the lux package leather steering wheel changed materials at some point, so why not the core radio parts too? Maybe Ford ran out of one older super cheap set of units and had to start using a newer unit. I don’t find the radio as slow as what he showed in this video.

    This would have been the perfect small truck for my need. The only thing I asked for was power windows and Android Auto. Too bad the dealer had to mark up the price of my preorder from $25k to $38k before tax when it was delivered. I ended up with a Santa Cruz and enjoy it but would have enjoyed a hybrid system.

      That would be ridiculous greedy mark up. The Santa C. I am very interested in, higher end interior. They do need some option for increased economy. And available lesser cab, more bed. I dig the grill and lights on the SantaC. Way cool.

    Love the review! I ordered the ‘23 hybrid not really knowing much about it except that it made better mpg than any other vehicle on the market that I was interested in, was at least $3k lower than the next cheapest option and it it’s a truck! Wanted a used Toyota truck but they were like $10-15k. Why not upgrade to a new truck for less than $10k more and be able to resell it for $35-45k to those idiots you mentioned in a year if I don’t like it? Also, that’s a heinous paint job but I respect the hell out of you for it. Retro vibes! Definitely gonna check out more of your vids!

    Good review wish I had mine. Ordered in September 2021, in April it was scheduled for build, after 5 delays over 3 months they are now telling me they don't know when I will get it. Honestly, if they open orders for 2023 this month it will not go over well with those of us still waiting on our 2022's (ordered a base model no options XL hybrid)
