This brought me to tears. I'm a 59 year-old woman who just bought property in Alaska and I plan on building a cabin. I'm not skilled in that type of work so someone will be building it for me but I have to say you are wise beyond your years and I feel exactly like you do and I've wasted my life on stupid things. Thank you for inspiring this 59 year old woman to do what she loves. What I told my family what I was doing they said, "You're not moving to Alaska." I said, "Watch me."

Yesterday was figuring out my rain gutters. And the irony of getting rained out before finish is not beyond me. Skipped college and moved to Valdez, Alaska at 19 years old to kayak guide and build my life here. Now, 10 years later, I am thriving with some property and filling our freezers and pantry each year with fresh veggies from our garden, foraged foods, and all the fish and moose meat we can eat! If you're ever down this way visiting Valdez, you're welcome to come crash at our home! Just shoot me a message and we'd love to host you! Best of luck on your journey! Through all the highs and lows, just know it's all better than a cushy cubicle life wasted to stagnation. Grow and be inspired by our amazing land, mountains, lakes, rivers, and oceans. Chop lots of wood; more than you think you'll need. Warmth in the dead of winter feels like real luxury. Subscribed!

Is everybody forgetting how often his parents have gone to Alaska? Much less how many times he has been there? And how many homes and off grid living he has been drenched in from birth because of his parents. They raised both their kids well and they think for themselves, the kids. It is so great this kid is doing this. We can’t begin to imagine where his life will take him. Okay okay, will stop.

@@jordansmith5754 Yeah brother! You should make the leap up here if the opportunity is calling yoh. I'm in a single family property situation at the moment but hoping to build some tiny home rentals on the property here on Valdez for the future to build up a cool little community of friends and dogs living and supporting each other. Mostly as housing for our town's kayak guides who move in permanently.
Hardest part is getting here. Once up here, Alaska is the land of opportunity. Don't stay stuck in Anchorage for too long. Move around and find work doing anything. Explore until you find the area you want to settle. Then spend a winter there before deciding on property. You can make good money here and if you can live frugally and find cheaper rent, you can stockpile quickly to put a payment down on some land. Think about where your property will be in relation to money making opportunities in the area. With the advent of youtube and starlink satellite internet, I think this kids going to be successful wherever he's at. Get creative and practice talking to strangers if that's not something you're already good at/comfortable with. Getting to know the local community will open so many doors, then you've just got to take your pick of what you'd like to do with your time for a living. Build the dream!

Life is tough for those that can't read, can't write, can't add or do geometry or simple algebra. Might feel like a waste but that is only because you excelled. Building that cabin, buying the land with extensive contracts, figuring costs and accurately cutting geometrical pieces all come as a result of the toiling through years of the education system. School feels like a waste but this very complicated and wonderful tool called RUclips is designed by educated techs and engineers which is allowing you a chance to make a living in Alaska. Be grateful and go far.

Never has a youtuber resonated with me so much; I'm 18 too, fresh out of high-school and starting college. From the time I was 7 I knew the system was broken, and never found much fulfillment, purpose or meaning from school aside from programming me into a "model citizen"; obedient, attentive and closed minded.
I know I said that I'm starting college; specifically I'm going to attend Humboldt University to study conservation ecology, my calling and true passion in life. Even though my selected school is "cheap" it's still a hefty cost to attend, and is still part of the same broken system as any other college or school in the U.S.
I've dreamed of moving out and heading up north to start a small homestead for years. Growing up in a suburb in the hot, dry valley, the lack of natural diversity, cultural richness and freedom has eaten away at my happiness for longer than I can remember, and the "call of the wild" has grown louder and louder each day.
If I could just drop everything right now and move up to Oregon or Washington, buy 10-20 acres and build a cabin/yurt/tiny home, I'd be a fulfilled man. I could actually have the space to grow crops and raise livestock, and live off the land and take on a much more healthy, active and enriching lifestyle than I do now. Alas, I've always subconsciously held that troubling mindset of "That's not how the world works" and felt pressure to graduate, secure a good job as a restoration planner/wildlife biologist in order to earn enough cash to buy that land, as well as support myself until I could provide my own food, water, energy and shelter.
However, while college is still my plan for now at least, your perspective is extraordinarily intriguing to me. I think it's far too easy to feel trapped in modern life, at least that's how I feel each day. But here you are just starting over and heading to Alaska to make a decent life for yourself, living by your own rules and will instead of by the fist of society. I cannot express how much I respect that, and how I long to be able to do the same.
I'm no hippie, but being as close to nature as possible is where I find the most peace. The idea of growing and gathering my own plants, hunting and butchering my own meat, building my own home. Using my mind and body to navigate my surroundings and tend my land, and spending hours outside in the brisk air. Having a like minded community to share resources, knowledge and kinship with. Being surounded by acres of wildlands, no cars or houses in sight. Each day bringing new challanges, joys, and miracles to explore; that is how humans are made to live. Not crammed into concrete boxes sitting in front of a screen all day, obsessed with green paper and power. That life is one I hope to never wind up in.
I'm here for the journey too brother, and I'm eager to see your adventure unfold. Regardless of the outcome, you've given me hope that I don't have to sit and wait for that opportunity to come, and while I'm not quite able to risk everything right now and abandon my responsibilities, you've given me a lot to think about for my near future.
Thanks for sharing your story, and best of luck! Now excuse me while I catch up on 2 months worth of your content, cant believe I only found you now!

Bit of wisdom for you guys. The main purpose of school isn't what you learn or exactly how relevant it is to whatever the heck you wanna do, it's to bring people your age together, people from many different walks of life, together into 1 setting.
You'll learn as you get older that its built into us to not work well with others. We are social creatures but we do not team up very well without a lot of socializing, it's not a skill you're born with, it's a skill you learn. And it sure does take a lot of learning.
That's the main purpose of school and it serves its purpose very well. It's just extra that what you're doing is learning together mostly, with group activities lightly sprinkled on top. It's productive, it's at least semi-interesting(at least some of the classes), it puts people together without having to work together, it keeps you from being a stupid kid(kids have terrible judgement) and getting hurt or hurting someone else(mostly, school can be tough sometimes).
I could go on and on and write a book about the importance of school, but the point is the main purpose is as stated.

What about when nobody is available to work in factories, build houses, work in stores, then what? Is every young person going to just move to Alaska and drop out of society? Who’s going to pay for roads to be built, fireman and police officers? Who’s going to become police officers or firemen? If ALL of our young people decide live like this and remove themselves from society, what does that do to the US military? Don’t you think their are countries who would love to take advantage of a weakened United States military? I’m sure that would really make America great. The quote from Chris McCandless was interesting because in the end, he appears to be no happier than when he left home and he appears to have regretted a lot of his decisions.

First off what I would recommend is ask yourself what do you really enjoy doing? What is something that makes you feel like you would do for free if someone would be willing to pay your bills? Once you discover what that is then pursue it. Because when you find something that drives you and makes working seem like your playing the money will find its way to you. Secondly if living off the grid is something you are interested in start learning the basics. Learn to build a sustainable shelter, how to cut down trees, so you have wood for the winter time. How to hunt, clean and break down an animal. How to cook it and preserve it. Grow your own vegetables. Learn how to make your own outhouse. How to protect yourself against predators. What plants, berries and fungi are edible in your area, which edible plants, berries and fungi have poisonous look alike. Then if you are still working take your vacation or if you don’t like your job quit around spring or summer and get some practice living out in the woods far away from civilization and see how you do. Also it’s not bad to find a companion of the opposite sex that wants this lifestyle as well. It makes things so much better. It really brings things back to that hunter gatherer mind set. Plus it’s just nice to have that comfort of another human next to you. The woods are a very lonely place to be.

As one who is even older than your parents, I have one piece of advice for you: Everything Has Value. In your journey of life, never discount the value of the impediments in your way. Each and every one of them guides us to the next point in our journey. We learn more from our mistakes and our misfortunes, than we do from our successes.
I agree with you, the American Education system has been garbage since the 60's. Public education stopped being the place to teach kids how to survive as adults, and instead, trained them to be mindless robots. I learned more from reading on my own, than I did in school.
Yet, I am gratefull for school: I wouldn't be able to read, write, speak, and do math- without the start I got in school. I wouldn't have learned history or geography or science without school... even with as bad as it was. It may not have been much, but it got me started.
Everything has value, learn to recognize what good comes with the challenges. Your entire mantra, manifesto presented in this piece, is a direct result of your experiences in School. I suggest you be thankful for that. School made you who you are, but your family helped you define who you WANT to be. You couldn't have one, without the other.
You would not be heading into the Great Unknown with courage and anticipation, without the negative experiences you had in school. Something to be greatful for.
Everything has value, especially our misfortunes, but we must learn to search for the value. Faith in the Heavenly Father makes that search a little bit easier.
I won't wish you luck, because I don't believe in luck. Everything happens for a reason, so we learn to value everything. Congratulations on finishing your 'ahem' Sentence, and I look forward to your journey with all it's glorious mishaps and wonderous exploration.

My parents dont believe in this tho, theyre always like: "no you have to get a job you have to do this or this or do your homework bla bla bla" Im planning on scraping some money together to leave all this and live as i want to. Build a cabin somewhere and live in peace. I have a lot to learn but im willing to risk my life on it rather than living in captivity.
Ive always been in the wild so its not new for me but there are many things about gardening and meat storage i dont know anything about so right now im just taking as many trips as i can, to educate myself about nature and survival.

My stepbrother went to a trade school, on the G. I. Bill, and walked straight into an HVAC job at Honeywell that paid him to move to South Carolina. After a couple of years of missing our family, he moved back here to Pennsylvania shortly after marrying the wonderful girl that went with him to live wherever he was living. He made a nice profit from the sale of his home in SC, too.

I moved to Alaska from Ohio at the age of 20 with my ex husband and a three year old horse in 1992.
31 years later, I’m still in Alaska. Lived a LOT of life: could write a book about raising 4 children and living in the backcountry for 12 of those summers.
Laid to rest on our property that horse 2 years ago at the age of 31.
I’m going to follow your journey.
I own two businesses here now, so if you run out of $ you can come bank up again and go back to your cabin.
Also, my husband is a carpenter in the off season and has built plenty of cabins here.

35, and I'm what the marketers call a millennial. I went to school because I was told to, I got a job for a company that pays my loans and mortgage because thats whats expected, I have a house in a state that requires both me and my wife to BOTH work to afford everything and our daughters... Hearing you speak about pursuing the things you love almost sounds like a luxury. I'm told I shouldn't hate what I have work wise, but all that I have feels shallow. I worked hard to have a title at some random company, but I did it to pursue my passions on my time off. My generation was duped, but I feel yours is seeing the BS for what it is worth.

I felt the same as this man, forced into work or society that you do not like for 8 hrs a day basically everyday. I was so tired I couldn’t enjoy my days off because I couldn’t stay awake. This has been the best decision I’ve ever made because now I’m building something for the future vs just surviving doing something I hate. Yes I’ve had to sacrifice some of the Luxuries of being on the grid with a 9-5 job, but the pros outweigh any cons because I have free time now and I’m able to do what I want ( I couldn’t have dogs or even hang a painting where I was renting)

You spoke right from my heart and took the words right out of my mouth. Since I was a child I've had a strong pull towards Alaska, and growing up in such an oppressive society that has left me with only trauma and pain, my longing for Alaska has only gotten stronger. So has my determination, despite having to work paycheck to paycheck to survive in a rough part of my town. I want to believe that there's more to my future than just two-faced people droning on about meeting their "numbers" daily, more than all the chaotic city noise and heartless individuals. I crave nature and the cold, to be able to breathe the scents and finally let my guard down for that moment. I only hope that I'll be able to make Alaska home someday. It feels like where I should have been born.
Normally I'm shy, but I wanted to thank you for making this leap and for following your gut on this. You have my respect and I'm cheering for you!

      @rie20100, well-said! And Mick, also well-said!
I turn 60 this year and always let the stupid stuff hold me back. I got a chronic pain illness at 40 and can't do things the same way as before. BUT, I have learned to put the crap out of the way. It will take longer to have my dreams, but I will have them. All the best!

Well said kiddo, and I am a man who has done so much in my life, I am burned out and my kids are grown adults. You are on your way to happiness and I am along for the journey. I have seriously done more things than any will ever do in one lifetime. I have played professional football, been to Iraq, played semi pro-soccer, just to name a few. Now I have lost it all as well when a pill addiction took over my life and it made my awesome wife divorce me after 20 years to save the family. So I have had the very big ups and the very lowest downs. Now I am back on top and enjoying my kids and their adventures. don't let anyone ever tell you no, that is impossible, because there isn't anything we can't do!! Good luck and I will be here watching and waiting to see what you do next!! Good luck and God Speed my friend!

I have 4 different YT accounts and have subscribed with each, watched the video all the way through with each and liked with each, not that you needed the help. It is abundantly obvious you will not need to sell your stuff & start a business any time soon. You got this!🎉

    absolutely brilliant.
my mans, you hit the nail on the head, and I’m stoked out of my mind that you not only verbalized this and took the risk to go for something crazy different, but also that you are welcoming us into this journey. You’re touching something our disillusioned generation recognizes and are desperate to fixed. Praying that your pursuits become a beckoning to an alternative way of life for this generation! God’s speed, my friend!
Get after it bro, you have my support ✊💪

Looking forward to seeing future videos. My son just moved to Alaska for a summer job and I shared your channel with him. He too is looking for new avenues and adventures in life, something he felt was kept/stolen from him in his youth.

🙌 🙌 🙌 You’ve got my support! I feel the same way about our schools. I’m 59, and I thought it was waste of my life back then and still do. I raised my kids the same stupid way. Not realizing there was a different direction. So proud of this new generation, taking back their time, their rights. Way to go!! Best of Luck!!

When you get away from all those people. Trapped in their little job. Give it four years. You'll regret you ever spent one day in it. You will feel so bad for them. I ran from the land to into the city for fifteen years. Made more money than most and it was the biggest waste of my life. You're still young. You can do the same thing h a u l ass.

Be smart and listen to your parents. They went through a lot to learn get where they are. Don't be proud but appreciate the free knowledge waiting to be shared with you . I'm 73
and really advanced in my life when I started listening to older experienced folks. It took me to age 21to start listening 😢.

When I first viewed this video, I thought how can an 18 year old begin a RUclips channel and it has 29K subscribers in two months with only ten videos. Then someone mentioned that his papa has a channel with nearly one million subscribers and mom has a channel with over 500,000 subscribers (as of July 2023).
I was not familiar with any of these channels until I read this.
      Sorta explains things.

I do not think that you are giving this young man enough credit. His parents' channels may have given him views, but he earned the number of subscribers.

Having grown up in a RUclips family and having two parents who are already very versed in how to make a video that will get a lot of views, plus how to build a successful channel, is incredibly valuable for any eighteen year old setting out to have their own channel.
Someone who grew up without this advantage (i.e. a young person with parents who had no connection to the business of RUclips) would undoubtedly take longer to reach this level of success, both in number of subscribers and number of views.
I am not being critical in any way.
This happens all the time in the entertainment industry.
