Thank you Anne for posting up the video. I had experienced the exact same noise from my Nutone heat pump over the winter time. This unit was only 8 month old and the first winter after installation. Initially I wasn't sure the noise was actually coming out of my newly installed Nutone (l lived in a townhouse), but over time we confirmed it was my unit making that unbearable noise. Eventually, I contacted local dealer and my installer with the video clip you posted. Unfortunately, it is not my video evidence, but demonstrated them how noisy the sound can be. I have to wait for this winter to record the noise by myself to collect evidence before anything could be done. I just wanted to thank you for sharing the video, and tell you that you did a great job capturing the problem. I will do the same as you did with my unit this winter and hope it to get fixed at some point. I will keep you posted.
Great news - the manufacturer replaced the heat pump. The entire unit is quiet and the trumpeting sound no longer occurs. I'll leave the video up in case someone else can use it to demonstrate the sound their unit makes. Thanks for the all support and comments!
Anne Giles thank you for the video. My unit made this terrifying noise at 1:21am last night and it woke me up in a panic (adrenaline pumping and all). Now I know what it is!
Thank you for leaving the video up. My fairly new unit is doing the exact same thing. I've had this unit for only 1.5 years and the old one definitely didn't do this. Sounds more like a groan or moan than a trumpet though and yours is definitely much louder. Still, the sound was very alarming the first few times I heard it as I didn't know what it was and where it was coming from. Then I noticed it happens only when the exterior HVAC unit is about to cycle the heat off. I do have a 10-year warranty so I guess it will need replacing. Thanks.
Bless for posting this! I’ve got a 3 year old Lennox 5-ton Merritt series 14SEER. It does the same randomly when it goes into heat. I agree it’s a defrost cycle and I’ve located the sound coming a the change over. However, it’s in fact as loud as a person improperly playing a trumpet at 2am. I instantly turn off the unit via NEST. Hvac said, “it’s normal”. A rushing sound, yes. Not the sound of a whale farting! I’ll show them this video next time
Lets start out with the noise. The noise level is unacceptable. Was the old unit placed in the same spot? I find it ridiculous that a heat pump would be installed on a deck near the slider. When the unit was first running, it was loud but more or less normal. The noise when it shuts off is the reversing valve shifting to the deenergized position. That is probably a low voltage wiring issue. It should not deenergize when it shuts off. Another issue is the unit appears to be in defrost after 2:30. If so there is a problem with the defrost because there is no frost on the coil. The unit should not go into defrost until there is frost on the coil. When the outdoor unit was replaced, was the indoor coil also replaced? If not, they are probably not matched. This could cause inefficient and improper operation. I also note you have a drier on the liquid line (blue thing) and you also have a drier inside the unit. That is a big no-no as it causes increased pressure drop. Other things to check are plugged filter and possible plugged indoor coil. In summary, this does appear to be a good install. I would have someone not connected to the install look at it. Let me know how you do. GFM
it probably has one of those dumb defrost thermostats that doesn't compare the coil temperature to the outdoor air temperature, kinda like the ones the goodmans have. a lot of goodmans go into deforst even when they don't need to here in Arizona.
Hello there mine makes noise only when cool is on when unit and condenser shutt off makes like mum mint noise I was guaranteed it reverse valve what u think
My AC sounded like this bc of a Nest thermostat, which was de-energizing my condensers' reversing valve after each cooling cycle. As of the day of my post, Nest still has not resolved the issue with an update, so I switched to Ecobee, and haven't heard the noise since. My AC tech said the valve shutting off after every cycle could potentially damage my condenser, since everything is equalizing too fast, and can create a vacuum, drawing in liquids where they shouldn't be. Nest needs an "always on" during cooling option, rather than to turn off the valve either after every cycle or seasonally.
Ours is a brand new unit and has made this noise from the very first winter. We are constantly told that the Godzilla noise is “Normal.” They replace one thing and another, but nothing fixes the noise. Our neighbors have complained and pretty much are livid that we don’t replace the unit as it wakes them over and over again at night. It also blows cold air and drops the temp so we end up wearing jackets and using blankets to try and get warm.
This is pretty terrible. My HVAC unit was replaced back in Aug 2018 and this winter it has started making this sound. It isn't as loud as this example but it's still very alarming and embarrassing. I was also told it's normal. I wonder how she got the manufacturer to replace it. I personally believe this isn't normal. Homeowners likely have to jump through hoops to get the manufacturer to replace the unit under the warranty when this happens and HVAC repair companies know this so they just tell us it's normal when it's anything but.
Thanks for posting. We have same unit as yours put in last year winter and it makes the same sound when its cold out! HVAC company came out on a warm day and could not reproduce the sound so they did nothing. Now that it's cold out its doing it again all the time but he won't come fix it without charging me! Got a fight on my hands!
WOW! I am here because my new one is making a loud hiss for about a second or two like pressure relief so I think i'm good after listening to your nice video. Thanks. Burrrrrr! ;-).
Thank you for this! I couldn't get any results searching "heat pump trumpet sound" but it's exactly what yours sounds like! How old was your unit when you did this video? Our unit is only a few months old--starting its life during August heat and the weather very quickly went sub-freezing, now that we are in November and already have several snows under our belt. This was EXACTLY what I was hoping to find on the internet. :)
I replaced my heat pump about 6 weeks ago and I've got exactly the same noise. Yours looks to be a Nordyne, the same as mine. Mine is a 2.5 ton unit. I realize that heat pumps do make a noise as they go into and out of the defrost cycle, but like yours, mine has this additional, metal to metal grinding sound, that lasts a couple of seconds. It woke me up a couple of nights ago, it was so loud. Strange, during the recent cold snap (0 F) I didn't get that noise, just a "whoosh", when the unit went into and out of the defrost. I'm having the installer come out next week to look at the unit. I'm real concerned that the answer may be, "that is normal". My old heat pump, the same brand, didn't have that noise.
I'm with you, Lou Linn - my former heat pump experience has not been like this. It's a Gibson unit and the recent cold gave it a hard workout and lots of opportunities for me to experience the "metal to metal grinding sound" you describe. The installer is willing to swap in a new reversing valve but apparently the dryer the weather the better, so I think that will need to be timed. I tried to feel grateful that at least the heat pump was working, if noisily, during that record-breaking cold! Thanks for your comment!
Anne, Nordyne makes the Gibson unit. If you go to their website, nordyne.com and scroll to the bottom, you will see "Our Brands", you will see Gibson's name. They make units for a number of companies. Our units are built by the same company. I had my installer come out today. I had also videoed my unit so he could hear the noise. He also put it into defrost mode and agreed it was too loud. He called his supplier and asked if they have had similar problems and the supplier said yes. He suggested replacing the compressor. The compressor that came with the unit is a scroll type unit and apparently when the heat pump goes into and out of defrost mode, the refrigerant will change direction and can cause the compressor to make excessive noise. The new compressor will be a reciprocating compressor and is apparently less susceptible to this problem. My unit is under warranty and they are going to do the change under the warranty. All this info is coming from the installer. I'm hoping it will work. Good luck on your issue. Lou
Lou Linn Thanks so much for your help, Lou! I have shared your comment with our HVAC company and will keep you posted on what happens to my unit. Very best wishes to you on your issue, too!
***** Hi Anne, Any luck on getting your system fixed? My installer is how telling me that Nordyne won't warranty compressor because "nothing is broken". Apparently being excessively loud is not a problem, in their book. I read with interest the post that the another person submitted who indicated that the reversing valve is the problem and replacing the valve is a long job. I am wondering if this might be an issue, with my contractor. They have delayed this thing for so long. Its either too cold or too wet, etc. They now tell me they are going to put a cover over the compressor that will muffle the noise. Just a band-aid so I'll go away. It is so frustrating. The new unit wasn't cheap, I paid on the same day as the install and now no one seems to want to do what's right.
Mines a Nordyne and it’s always made this noise when the reversing valve comes on since it was installed I was concerned but it’s been going strong thankfully for a few years now
Thanks MrCraz6r. It's not my favorite location either, but it's a townhouse on a very small lot so there's no place else to put it. The new unit is quiet so all is well. Thanks again.
Anne, Can I ask what you did to get a new unit.....Mine sounds EXACTLY like that and I am told that is normal and it is running fine. There is NO WAY that is normal. I have talked to my technician and he says its normal and then another he seems to think there might be something wrong but not sure what and says a noise it normal. I just didnt know what steps you took to get a new one....
It's been awhile but if I recall, my repair company worked with the manufacturer to have the manufacturer replace it. My repair company was small and local and really took a hit on the labor to take out the unit and replace it. My sympathy goes out to everyone involved when an expensive piece of machinery goes bad!
Sorry to hear! I wrote this in an earlier comment: "My repair company was small and local and really took a hit on the labor to take out the unit and replace it." So I didn't pay for the labor but I also don't know if the repair company is still in business. :(
Do you remember what you said to them to get a new unit? Mine is a gibson/nordyne, 2 years old, and although not as bad as yours it is making a similar sound.
I took the video, uploaded it to RUclips, sent them the link to the video, and asked for help. I think each situation is unique - a complex of unit/manufacturer/vendor/customer variables - and the outcome of each case will be unique, too. Again, I'm so sorry you're having trouble!
***** Did you get that valve replaced? Because any time your reversing valve moans like that, it's already bad, and will stop working, i'm also hearing a lot of hissing after it turns back on, which means your valve seals are shot!
Ha! Those units suck. I've had so many service calls for that issue on newly installed units (by the builder) and the manufacturer ends up replacing them. Defective reversing valves.
Yes, I think that's right. The challenge is that the noise is so loud that it wakes me up several times per night. The HVAC company will try an additive today. Hopefully that will take care of the problem. Thanks for the comment.

Havcguy84, it is normal to have a hiss coming from the reversing valve, BUT it should not be nearly as loud as this unit here. It should also not have that loud “trumpeting” sound. Anne, I see that the unit was replaced in some of your other comments. Is it still going strong?
