Michael Paul Smith it's not nearly as menacing as it appears. It's in a cello friendly key. You may want to consult with a cellist friend for the best fingering. For example, after the intro, you want to repeat the melody on your D string, not the A. Practicing 3-4 octave scales in this key will also help you find the notes in a more efficient manner. This is my go to piece for nearly every occasion. Bonne chance ⚜️🎻🎶
I love the image of someone rising out of their coffin, cello in hand, and just playing and elegie for their guests ant their own funeral, then sinking back down... I know this isn’t what you meant but it’s a funny image in my mind
Much luck and respect for anyone that could play this piece at their own funeral!!! The piece is strikingly beautiful though. I used to play a lot of cello I worked my way through college playing cello and played in lots of symphonies and I played this piece many times and it was always magnificent to play. I still remember playing that low C string for two measures and watching the c-string vibrate half an inch back and forth and just pulling out the raw beauty of that low C. my challenge was to always try to make that string vibrate more than I had made it vibrate before. And when I finally made the string rattle against the fingerboard I knew that I had reached my maximum. Let me tell you as a cellist this piece is worth becoming a cellist for. And later years after I played cello I also bought a violin and a viola and my encouragement to buy the violin was to one day play Massanet's Thais Meditation. I can kind of play it if I hold the violin between my legs like a cello but it doesn't work really well. I've got a long ways to go but there's also a lot of very beautiful music yet to play. I remain resolute.
BaileyRob this is kind of late but this song was actually written about the composers wife that died, the song literally represents death, the death is in the last six inches of your bow
+Claire Pierce Hey! I'm also very excited because I've been chosen to dance this in contemporary style in 25/6/16 at my dance school's annual performance!
I've been assigned to play this by my private teacher and it honestly terrifies me. I am a bassist and have never played anything like this before but I love the piece
You got this! The music is so rich, I couldn't stop myself from learning both parts haha, you can do this. Good luck with this piece though, I know some of the stretches can get rather large for bass.
Izzy G I have too, and although I have to do 2 other songs first, every time I hear it I want to play this song more and more. It's so emotional I can't wait to express this myself
Having come to Faure's music at the age of 58 and only having known a handful of his music prior to this I have to say that I am totally captivated by his music and his manner of writing. Before I started to investigate his music and perform a series of interpretations with just piano and violin I had always found his music slightly difficult to listen to. Maybe it was because I was younger or just didn't give enough time to it, but how I missed out! His music is for music's sake and purely from the heart. Don't miss out on a wonderful experience. Open your ears, heart and mind and you will discover another world.
My master was one of his personal students and told me many anecdotes about him. They always come back to me when I listen to his music. Especially this one.
J'ai 16 ans, je suis pas bizarre décalé ni harcelé, j'aime aller voir des dessins animés au cinéma, mais mon père est violoncelliste, et je pleure tellement c'est beau
I am familiar with this in performacnes by more famous performances but really enjoyed this one both for its forthright courage in the heavier sections and its delicate lightness where required - and the gradations between the two. And what a work!
Here from This War of Mine. This original version is a lot more melancholic, the sadness is flowing in a slow crawl. TWOM version is more... Desperate, I could say? The higher pitch and the fact that the survivors are put in such a bleak, horrible place, trying to outlive the war. Definitely gave that vibe. This is really nice.
My mother had a CD of Pavane songs, and this just triggers memories of my childhood. I remember crying because I wanted to listen to classical music at like 9pm when I was about 7 and I had to wait until the morning. I sometimes feel that it's selfish of me because all I associate this with is with my own personal happy memories. I feel it would spoil it somehow if I saw someone actually playing these pieces. Is that awful?
Everyone has their own experiences with music. Interestingly enough, your remark isn't the first time I've heard someone wanting to refrain from getting too involved with the music in such a way. Don't blame yourself for how you choose to appreciate art, so long as it's not hurting anyone :)

@@hithere324 Tbh it sounds pretty even to me! Maybe it's just because I've been attuned to hearing it a certain way for over 6 years now haha. If I were to go out of my way to interpret it, I would argue that the cello is sort of passing off its torch to the piano so they can trade off back and forth at 4:05. But I can certainly see how one would prefer the cello to have the stronger voice at 4:00.
I started learning it when I was a freshman in high school and took it to a competition when I was a sophomore (don’t ask me how I did)(I did good at the regional competition, but a series of unfortunate events caused me to fumble at the state-level competition) Keep trying it! It’s an easy piece to make people cry to lol
Before I respond, I must ask: Can you send me a performance where you think the dynamic markings are played through properly? I'd be very interested in listening :)
Colin Kirkpatrick maybe he thinks about the dynamics of the piano part. By the way, listen to the version of Isserlis, which is not available on RUclips, but which is on his album of Fauré's complete work.
I got to play this yesterday in my orchestra, live on the national radio station. Needless to say that it was a huge success.

Me

Like
The
Flame
Oooh...
Golden droplets
No don't stop it

What’s the speed?
It's 69 bpm.
It says in the printed music: Molto adagio. Most versions I heard are more in the Andante side not even Adagio let alone Molto adagio
óriási élmény Gabriel Fauré zenéjét hallgatni, megnyugtató, de ugyanakkor felcsigázó

Maybe it just me but I think the piano is over powering the cello and I was missing a lot of cello. Thoughts?
Which parts?
Like in 4:00 the cello doesn’t really embrace the notes that he or she has, even in the after the forte it sounds... “blobby”
Other than that I love this duet, it’s very expressional and beautiful
@@hithere324 Tbh it sounds pretty even to me! Maybe it's just because I've been attuned to hearing it a certain way for over 6 years now haha. If I were to go out of my way to interpret it, I would argue that the cello is sort of passing off its torch to the piano so they can trade off back and forth at 4:05. But I can certainly see how one would prefer the cello to have the stronger voice at 4:00.
give me a this song sheet please :o

very very thanks :)
The music sheet is like Braille for me😂😂😂
It's more likely to be a mazurka than a Waltz
c-moll
I’m not sure why I’m trying to play this, im a freshman 💀
I started learning it when I was a freshman in high school and took it to a competition when I was a sophomore (don’t ask me how I did)(I did good at the regional competition, but a series of unfortunate events caused me to fumble at the state-level competition)
Keep trying it! It’s an easy piece to make people cry to lol
I’ll keep trying, I’d love to be able to play it for an audition or performance some day, thanks for the encouragement :)
I have a recital for this in a week, can’t play the 32nd note section at all 💀💀
It is a shame that the performers appear to have completely ignored Fauré's careful dynamic markings.
Before I respond, I must ask: Can you send me a performance where you think the dynamic markings are played through properly? I'd be very interested in listening :)
Colin Kirkpatrick maybe he thinks about the dynamics of the piano part.
By the way, listen to the version of Isserlis, which is not available on RUclips, but which is on his album of Fauré's complete work.
who cares it sounds really good in this recording. not everything has to be exact
