Watching wrestling for 60 years, he’s the best Hawkeye I have ever seen, and I’ve watched a lot of the great ones! It felt exactly like 1970 when Gable lost.
Ramos’s vision quest with parallels to Larry Owings. Last year when Ramos was at 133 he pinned Luca Byrd. He drops to 125 and pins Lee in a similar fashion. We remember more of what Gable did after his loss to Owings. I hope the same for Spencer and he goes on to win gold at the Olympics.
People don’t understand that Spencer wouldn’t have even wrestled this year if he wasn’t able to go for 4. The fact he fought through his injuries to get his 3rd title is unbelievable in itself. You could see it every time he wrestled this year that his knees were giving him problems. So, the fact that he dominated his way to the semi-finals is other worldly. So, yeah, when his quest for 4 is no more, his team is unable to catch Penn State, and the US Open is not much longer after the NCAAs, it’s not a hard decision to make when you really take a step back and look at the situation. If you’re a 3X champ, 3rd place might as well be the same as not even qualifying for the tournament. Out of everyone calling him a quitter, none of them have accomplished even a fraction of what he has.
If he had gone to PSU they'd have redshirted him to let him get healthy and he would have been a 4-timer. TnT burned him out because they only care about themselves.
You said one sentence that sums up Lee. He came into his first NCAAs with a chip on his shoulders. I didn’t see any of that in his final NCAAs? I saw a guy who fell in love with the media and his fans image of him. He felt he was so dominant, that his opponents should just be honored to wrestle him. The greatest athletes of any sport, will always be aware of the doubters and always have a chip on there shoulders to prove them wrong. He should’ve came into that final college arena pissed off and ready to kick ass, instead of relaxed and not worried about anything.
Well stated. I saw him puff up on pride as well. He had the big head and had it coming. If I was him I'd be ashamed of myself for defaulting out after losing at NCAAs. I'd have rather stepped out there and gotten pinned rather than defaulting out like a dungheel rooster. And he wasn't really injured or he wouldn't have wrestled at the Open a month later.
The thing is he never made excuses about losing even in high school. I don’t think everyone realizes how bad having two bad ACLs are and just the fact he’s still wrestling as good as he is is insane. He honestly should’ve taken more time to fully heal
Gimme a break. That's his fallback excuse. The year before he claimed he won despite 2 bad ACLS and said "NO EXCUSES", this year he lost fair and square then withdrew claiming bad ACLS. He can't even keep his lies straight. He got the big head, got popped, and then showed us his lack of character.
@@genghiskhan7041 have you ever even wrestled with two torn ACLs? Yeah he managed to get through one tournament fresh off the injury but having that injury for almost 2 years and trying to wrestle after surgery without the full rest is insanely tough he only even pushed through to try and make history after he lost there was no more chance to make history, Iowa was out of the team race, and the us open was coming up of course he’d medical FF but even that wasn’t enough. Hell he didn’t even lose at the US open and had to medical FF
@@nrm0051 Hey, HE is the one that said "no excuses. Excuses are for wusses", not me. I'm simply agreeing with his wuss" assessment and think it applies to him quite neatly by his own definition. He did a self own, and I have to say I love it. He was a great kid when he got to Iowa, but he bought into all the chatter and nonsense "GOAT" talk by that halfwit Brands. He got the big head and got what he had coming. To be perfectly honest, he was a limited college wrestler. He used the same move, that arm bar/tilt, over and over and over. If you look at my messages before Big Tens you'll see I predicted he'd get decked by the end of the year. He was very good, not great, got the big head and got decked as a result. I wish him well in the future, but I enjoyed seeing him get pinned. I don't think he's going to make it on the Sr level. I hope I'm wrong on that, by the way.
Well that's the thing. I personally only take issue with how his fans would wave around his photos and posts or tell their sons, daughters, and wrestlers (for coaches) that to be a man you had to be like Spencer Lee. So many kids now fight through injuries instead of healing and being able to wrestle into their 40's. Why? Because we correlate manliness and toughness with what Spencer Lee did. So first it was "no excuses," and now after he forfeits, which came after he lost by pin, the same fans have excuses. That no one knows how tough it is to be Lee. So again, my issue is the wishy washy double standard hypocrisy of the fandom. As a wrestler and mentor, I tell wrestlers to heal. To live to fight another day. If you take care of your body, your body will take care of you. It has nothing to do with me being weak or me not being man enough. And I think if Spencer had followed said advice, he would have healed a lot better and been more prepared for the higher level competition. He also wouldn't look like a quitter, which I am sad to say, is what he did look like. Plain and simple. Props to him, sure, but I would have not quit after already doing all that damage to myself anyway. In for a penny in for a pound. Also how many of those same fans (I know so many) that tell their sons that second place is for losers. Or that quitting is not an option. I dunno...just a lot of mind changing.
Another great video thank you. Spencer is building a phenomenal legacy and has been a blast to watch. I was disappointed by the medical forfeit but don’t have all of the information. I’ll be rooting for him to win medals for the USA!
Spencer Lee does not have to explain or justify anything to anyone. In my 46 years in this sport I have seen a lot. He is still one of my favorites for his generation. All the couch Wannabes dogging on him can go pound sand. I hope he gets healthy and can accomplish his international goals.
A Sebastian Rivera career retrospective would be a good one. Always thought about his success in the regular season + conference championship and his short comings in the National tournament

I lost respect for him after he didn't wrestle back after he lost. His mom acted like a complete idiot by breaking her glasses. No one likes losing, but show some class.
The question to ask about Spencer: if he was somehow able to bridge out Ramos' hold and avoid the pin, and eventually win his semifinal match even in overtime, would Spencer have medically forfeited the finals? I don't think so! Bailing on the tournament after his semifinal loss, in my view, was Poor Sportsmanship!
Risking further injury for a match that essentially doesn’t matter isn’t worth it. In a vacuum it is poor sportsmanship, I’ll grant you that. But he was already injured.. and the possibility of winning it all went away. So why potentially compound your problems and extend your recovery time into Olympic training, etc. He had very good reason to medically forfeit the entire season, and his health declined as the season went on. The fact he made such a great run and even wrestled in the tournament is crazy. I really can’t blame him for calling it but that’s my opinion.
I've watched alot of Iowa and college wrestling. In my opinion, his injuries impacted his performance. I think they were bad when he won his last NCAA Title and only got worse. No one will ever know for sure, but I watched him closely and it was obvious to me. He wanted to win and had the talent to win; but his body would not let him. Spencer is one of the best there has ever been. I think the pressure got to him and that also impacted his performance. It's not easy when everyone expects you to just destroy everyone and just because you don't pin a guy; everyone says you lost it. My personal opinion is he didn't seem to be having as much fun during his last two years. The wrestling performance reflects that if you really look carefully. I wish someone would have helped him more in dealing with the stress that comes with being so excellent in wrestling. I wish Spencer well and think he is a good role model for anyone who is trying to be the best at whatever profession they are competing in. Thanks for the effort Spencer! Well done!
Iam still a huge fan of his. I believe just like Dan Gable said. “Loses took him to higher heights, that winning would’ve kept him from. Lee is no different. He will be a very tough wrestler to beat, from here on out.

He is definitely going down as one of the greatest. I was at the NCAA's in Tulsa this year and was shocked at his loss. When I found out he forfeited his final match (medically) I told my wife that I think he missed a golden opportunity to cement the GOAT label. He could have shown up and smiled and given credit to Ramos and said something like "it's deja vu all over again" referring to his high school loss. Now it's going to be a bit of an uphill climb getting back into people's good graces.
Ya so he works another job for a RUclips company and just wrestling media isn’t so profitable because there is so little money in wrestling. I believe he will start up again once season starts
It was shocking but coming back and wrestling to place after heartbreaking losses involves wrestling toughness thus forfeiting out will haunt him HORRIBLY wishing him the best from an Ohio wrestling 🤼♀️ fan
I’m just gonna be honest. Even if he did win his 4th straight, I still don’t think I would call him the greatest Hawkeye ever. This is mainly because I look at the dominance factor, style factor, and ultimately if Lee could beat any of the other Hawkeyes. For the most part I think if Lee was to wrestle every other Hawkeye, he’d beat everyone but the Brands brothers and Lincoln Mcilravy. Lee is very good and may indeed be the best Hawkeye, certainly the best top wrestler Iowa has produced. But every time Lee lost it was because the guy was aggressive and he got out wrestled, and Lee never wrestled someone as skilled or nearly as aggressive the Brands. Lee is certainly within the top 5, but I personally don’t put him as the best Hawkeye
I am sure every time he hears "Excuses are for wooses" he is sorry he said that out loud. Personally I give him much respect for his accomplishments. Great video....thanks
If it had a chance of making a difference for Iowa's title contention, he would not have forfeited out. Therefore, he considered the outside chance he might be able to go this summer if he gave himself that little break. It didn't work out. As to the future, we'll see; but as far as I'm concerned he's clearly an all-time great even if he were never to sniff a wrestling room again.
I wrestled in highschool. I was on a really good team. Ranked in the top ten in state. A few teammates ranked and one state champ. I couldn't Imagine anyone on our team forfeiting after a loss. We all had some injuries....
Spencer is great. Honestly I think his lost at the NCAA tournament isn't that bad... I think his biggest failure was never beating Rivera in their lil rivalry that happened so long ago but besides that he was the most dominant wrestler in college in a very long time.
I don't think anyone questions Lee's ability. Of course he has it in him to win world/Olympic titles. But it depends on his health. Also, as much as people talk about Ramos getting lucky, getting stuck on his back is kind of a vulnerability of Lee's. More than some of the other greats it would surprise me less if he got pinned by someone not as good as he is.
I think this is the end. Other guys just kept getting better and stronger through their careers. Lee has not evolved or grown. I believe gilman would man handle him, at this point. Also, lee is going to be a wreck mentally because of the pulling from both tourneys.
@@antisocialmedia2507 No doubt Lee has issues to overcome, but he's clearly a dominant wrestler. I'd like to see him healthy next year and wrestle Gilman. A couple years ago all the Lee fans were saying how much better we'd be with Lee on the team, but Gilman has been on fire. You're right, I'd probably put my money on Gilman, though I doubt it'd be domination.
In my opinion his legacy wasn’t ruined by losing in the semis it was the fact that he medically forfeited out of the tournament and then medically forfeited out of the semis at the us open. On top of that if he never said the infamous excuses are for wussies I think the backlash to forfeiting out wouldn’t have been as severe
I don't even know why his legacy is even in question. This is what happens when people idolize other people. Spencer Lee is one of the best wrestlers of all-time, but he is a PERSON. He is a wrestler that my boy and i have followed and most young wrestlers could learn a lot from watching his matches. My son thinks Lee is an awesome wrestler, but he is not trying to be the next Spencer Lee, he is working to be the best he can be. Create his own legacy. So if any young men are reading this, don't worry about what Spencer is doing with his life, just focus on yours. You can look at his work ethic as an inspiration to your game, but remember that you only get better when YOU put in the work. Take care and God bless
2 things… I wish the best for Spencer Lee. I really hope he can give himself time to heal…but there is that little thing called wrestling that gets in the way of that. Wrestlers wrestle hurt. Everyday. Wether it’s in practice or in a match. It’s just a matter of fact. When you are hurt, it limits what you can do physically. Spencer has two bad ACL’s. To even do what he does is remarkable. That being said…he is in a place where a top notch wrestler like himself is at a crossroads. Do I continue doing what I’m doing and constantly injure myself OR do try and give myself time to heal? And even if he gives himself time…it’s no guarantee he will be 100% Spencer needs to pull himself out of the limelight. He puts enormous pressure and endangers on himself with his “No excuses” mentality. While I agree with that kind of mentality…I also realize the human body can only endure so much…ESPECIALLY when you are walking around with two bad knees. If he wants to go out in a blaze of glory. Then so be it. The only thing that’s wrong with that is that he risks EVERYTHING (Olympic Gold) in the future.
Iowa coach and a great recruiter for young people. If Iowa does not secure him as a coach that would be a greater upset than losing his fourth NCAA wrestling title!
Many great athletes are brought down by their own words. Unfortunately, Spencer now has a greater mental hurdle than he does physical. His legacy will be he dominance on top and ability to tech almost anyone.
The fact that people lose respect for Lee after an injury default is sad. He didn’t even have to wrestle this year at all. His legacy was solidified a long time ago.
Not sure how much "luck" was involved. The first time they wrestled Ramos was up 8-1. Hes scored more takedowns and NF over Lee than Lee did over Ramos. To me Ramos simply put is a head to head bad match up for Lee.
Tom and Terry didn't deserve him. I have nothing against Iowa wrestling, except with how Tom and Terry train their wrestler's. Half of the team is falling apart by the time nationals roll around.
Let me ask you this: If Lee were at Penn State and he lost the exact same way, would Sanderson have allowed him to just opt out of wrestlebacks? No friggin way. That's because it's not about JUST the individual. It's the team. And Lee was supposed to be the leader of their team. How about John Smith? Would he have allowed that? Well, all you have to do is look at Daton Fix whose situation is arguably even more devastating than Lee's. No doubt Fix didn't feel like wrestling, but he was there. Respect. I'm sorry, but Lee should have been there and his coach sure as hell failed in his responsibility as a coach to put him back on the horse. No one doubts the pain he was going through, but that's the game. I think his legacy is secured regardless, but I also think down the road he will regret not finishing the job and demonstrating leadership even in his worst moment. That is the definition of character.
He should go for gold. He's a great freestyle wrestler. Get the gold Spencer. That's the pinnacle of wrestling. NCAA titles are cool but everybody knows who wins Olympic gold
Dudes a three time national champion and OWNED his failure. No excuses he owned it. By the way you can’t call him the GOAT of Iowa wrestling that title goes to Lincoln Mcrllavy. By the way open question to everyone…how many three time NCAA DIV 1 champions have there been?
Gable's was a bigger upset. Spencer Lee is one of the all-time greats.... Maybe TOP 10 of all time but towards the bottom of the Top 10. #1 Cale Sanderson, #2 Dan Gable, #3John Smith #4 Kyle Dake #5 Brent Metcalf # 6 Spencer Lee Yanni ????? That said I love Spencer as a wrestler... I wish he had finished and won out but....HE HAD NOTHING TO PROVE AND A LOT TO LOSE IF HE HAD TRIED TO FINISH WITHOUT HIS HEAD IN IT..... Kyle Dake may end up with an argument for the Greatest Wrestler of All time.... 20 wins vs 13 different NCAA Champions amd 13 Wins vs 5 different World Champions....4 x NCAA Champ at 4 different wt classes... 77 straight wins to finish his college career...
Ya so he works another job for a RUclips company and just wrestling media isn’t so profitable because there is so little money in wrestling. I believe he will start up again once season starts
@@stevenguzzo hey you gotta put food on the table and pay the bills. I am glad he is ok. A lot of wrestling news lately. Surprised he isn’t squeezing out something.
Love your show....but say what you mean and mean what you say...Spencer did NOT lose his final NCAA wrestling match...he forfeited them...big difference between him and Gable...
I wouldn't call Ramos victory over Lee a massive upset. Ramos was smoking Lee a couple weeks before 8-1 before Lee got his act together. Plus even if Ramos hadn't gotten the fall he'd have still have beaten Lee 10-7 in that last match.
Buckeye here. Spencers prob was his conf. The B1G builds its news worthy's to unreal expectations (knowing he was injured/ significant) his whole career. Had he been SEC they would have lied and fixed things. Had he been B12 he would have portaled to PSU.
He was very open about his commitment to wrestling whether he was hurt or not hurt and implicitly called out others, "No Excuses." And then he lost, he quit. I still consider him one of the greatest ever, but a hypocrite.
Unfortunately he didn't end up being Iowa's first four timer, but he will still go down as one of the all time best if not best Hawkeye to date. As far as all the arm chair experts talking trash about his medical forfeit, how many of you could win 3 national titles and make it to the semis in a fourth tournament in that condition. All of you would have ran home to your mom's basement a long time ago. At that point why not opt for a better chance of recovery and start focusing on freestyle and the road to the Olympics. As it is he didn't make the most recent US open. For a glimpse into what it looks like for a wrestler who hangs on too long look no further than Gable hobbling around on crutches before and after his hip replacements and having to have 28 surgeries throughout his life. No thanks, and none of you have the balls for any of that.

Another great video thank you for making it
Great job, Josiah!!
Will you be making any more wrestling videos?

Has your channel shut down???
Win, lose, or withdraw, I’m still a huge fan. Fingers crossed that he recovers and comes back stronger than ever.
Hey man you all good? Missing the content
It was shocking but coming back and wrestling to place after heartbreaking losses involves wrestling toughness thus forfeiting out will haunt him HORRIBLY wishing him the best from an Ohio wrestling 🤼♀️ fan
The two goals kind of explain his decision to wrestle through his injuries.
I agree with the previous posts. Your content is really missed, especially this time of year.
Did he quit
I am sure every time he hears "Excuses are for wooses" he is sorry he said that out loud. Personally I give him much respect for his accomplishments. Great video....thanks
If it had a chance of making a difference for Iowa's title contention, he would not have forfeited out. Therefore, he considered the outside chance he might be able to go this summer if he gave himself that little break. It didn't work out. As to the future, we'll see; but as far as I'm concerned he's clearly an all-time great even if he were never to sniff a wrestling room again.
🥇 First, it isn't the end of his career; but even if it was, he's still a great wrestler and always will be.
I wrestled in highschool. I was on a really good team. Ranked in the top ten in state. A few teammates ranked and one state champ.
I couldn't Imagine anyone on our team forfeiting after a loss. We all had some injuries....
If you don't mind me asking, what state did you wrestle in? I'm just curious.
Spencer is great. Honestly I think his lost at the NCAA tournament isn't that bad... I think his biggest failure was never beating Rivera in their lil rivalry that happened so long ago but besides that he was the most dominant wrestler in college in a very long time.
Create me if I'm wrong about the Rivera thing please
Where’s Josiah?
Spencer Lee is definitely Iowa’s current Goat!!!!
He’s a good man .. he will bounce back ..we are all for you..
2 things…
I wish the best for Spencer Lee. And even if he gives himself time…it’s no guarantee he will be 100%
Spencer needs to pull himself out of the limelight.
Did not agree with the medical forfeit, unless he was truly injured. But I love the guy’s career and want to see it continue
Had Spencer attended Penn State, he’d have accomplished his goals. I’m certain of that. Cael wouldn’t have used him up.
I just can’t ever respect the decision he made by not competing anymore in the ncaa after that loss ..
Where you at bruh
His legacy is amazing! How many three time cosmos champs have there been?
Iowa coach and a great recruiter for young people. If Iowa does not secure him as a coach that would be a greater upset than losing his fourth NCAA wrestling title!
What Happened to Fanco? I have been watching for a couple years now. Hope you're doing well, man
He's no longer making videos
Spencer Lee is probably the most complete wrestler I have seen in my 63 years.
Many great athletes are brought down by their own words. Unfortunately, Spencer now has a greater mental hurdle than he does physical. His legacy will be he dominance on top and ability to tech almost anyone.
Josiah, we, the people, need you back! Missing your Grade A content
The fact that people lose respect for Lee after an injury default is sad. He didn’t even have to wrestle this year at all. His legacy was solidified a long time ago.
Incredible pressure on him.. his dad is a good man..
Outstanding college career. Got stuck by a lucky ramos only to watch ramos fall to pat glory.
Not sure how much "luck" was involved. The first time they wrestled Ramos was up 8-1. Hes scored more takedowns and NF over Lee than Lee did over Ramos. To me Ramos simply put is a head to head bad match up for Lee.
I wish he had gone to penn state
Tom and Terry didn't deserve him. I have nothing against Iowa wrestling, except with how Tom and Terry train their wrestler's.
Half of the team is falling apart by the time nationals roll around.
Qualifying his weight and medaling at the Olympics would solidify his legacy
That is the definition of character.
asking if a three time national championship winner is a good or bad legacy is a dumb question
Is fanco dead? No vids yet this season

Come back Josiah! We need your content man.
Yo Josiah where u at?
Yo, where u at?

@@stevenguzzo how come?
@@daytonasayswhat9333 he's not making enough money off this channel. Because wrestling is not a very profitable sport
@@stevenguzzoI didn’t realize he was done I’ve been giving him money every month
He was very open about his commitment to wrestling whether he was hurt or not hurt and implicitly called out others, "No Excuses." And then he lost, he quit. I still consider him one of the greatest ever, but a hypocrite.
Spencer Lee and Alex Marinelli take over when Tom and Terry retire?
They would probably do a better job.
He's a top ten all timer period. I'm not a Hawkeye fan either
Is everyone forgetting about Mcilravy? 3x champ and 4x finalist. And was never pinned.
Medically forfeiting once is one thing but doing it twice well excuses are for Spencer Lee
