I just finished this book today and I had a similar experience. This is my second Ishiguro book and while I agree that's he's talented, I don't think his work is for me.
I liked his _The Remains of the Day_ but nothing I’ve read since has inspired me to read his new book or more of his work. Like you I just don’t think his books fit my taste.
I couldn't agree with you more, Ishiguro is a fantastic novelist. I loved Never Let Me Go, almost as much as Remains of the Day, which is my favorite novel by him. I think the only book by him that I haven't read yet is The Unconsoled, which I plan to remedy soon. I do admit that Never Let Me Go can drag at times, but I still think it is a great story. Thank you for an interesting and honest review.
Thank you for your comment. I was really into NLMG for the first eighty pages based solely on the writing, but then the pacing started to really bother me. I think Remains of the Day is a much better book, but I love Ishiguro's writing.
I remember watching this movie, but not if I've read the book or not. Either way, it's on my shelf and I plan to get to it soon. I do remember kind of agreeing with you about the pacing. I enjoyed the story, but something about it felt a little off. Great review~
I taught it many years ago in a class focusing on coming-of-age stories. I’m actually going to be giving away a Folio Society edition of it when I hit 500 subscribers.
Thanks for your review. Now I don't feel so bad about disliking the reading experience for it's pacing, inconsequential action and dull setting. However, I do understand that these were deliberate because of the big ideas he was mulling over. And it has stayed with me and I even re-read it with those revelations in mind, but I still don't like the reading experience. The big ideas are what make this a great work. What it says about us as humans is hard for us to confront.

Thank you very much. The thing is I really liked it for a while and then it just started to wear on me. Its worth reading just for the writing.

I have a feeling my opinion is in the minority :)

Yes. Certainly it has things to say about humanity and our lack of it. Thanks Angela.
