Lou has been talking about this new outdoor shower for so long!! Ever since the spring project began, he started scheming about setting up a freezing cold shower in the middle of the woods. This is definitely one of our stranger projects, but isn't that the point of having your own land and getting to follow your creative inspirations?! The shower works by harvesting water from our natural spring a couple hundred feet in elevation above the shower head, and then that water flows in a pipe through the forest to the shower location.
PS - After some tinkering, we were finally able to get it not to freeze in the night, by removing the shower head, and changing the orientation of the pipe so the water flows through it faster. The next step will be developing a couple more springs so that we can get more flow, ideally like 10 gallons per minute--right now we are at 3-4 gpm : )
    Big love,
    Dana, Lou, Max & Freja

You need another shipping container for bathroom and laundry

Lou you are great at building. Maybe its time to get a further shipping container for a bathroom for winter months. I know you guys love the outside and your bath and shower will be great in the warmer months. Please dont take this message as a negative. I love watching you guys.

Get a shower head designed for gravity water (low pressure). Water supply for the shower should have a T joint at ground level with a lever to direct flow. Flow should always be durected to ground level when the shower is not in use. This will eliminate water freezing in the hose going up the tree to shower head. Shower head should always be taken off when not showering. (Cold weather months)
    Thoughts to ponder?
    Good luck!

I was thinking this too... maybe the hose could stay at ground level when you're not using it, but you could have a hanger on the tree to place the hose on when you shower. Love Lou's ingenuity!

I notice a lot of people saying "build a proper bathroom and shower out of a smaller shipping container" or "in the wasted space between the containers," etc. I don't think they understand that this is not the sort of projects you have planned. Van lifers and full-time campers often go without "real" showers for quite a while and off-grid homesteaders do as well. Any kind of shower, outhouse, etc. is a luxury and, while attempting to live without making as much impact on the environment calls for solutions like the ones you are making.
If it's followers who are making these comments, where have they BEEN through all your videos? The travel in Odi, the Hawaii house, the sailboat ... all alternative living spaces and you think they'd be used to your aesthetic and habits by now!

All true with one minor reality kick - Max. Not convinced in this dream going back and forth with the son to the house to enjoy the showers and comfort and back here praising cold showers. The videos about homesteading feels like they are just a fasade of a real life. I don’t perceive this as real-real anymore in comparison to previous years.

Lou is a genius, just constantly looking to make your home to have all the things we take for granted and then looking for solutions to any obstacles. Love watching how this is done. Why is Max so darn cute? He is learning so much and one day will be talented like his parents. Stay safe and happy ❤

What about a pulley system, that when the shower/hose is not in use it’s on the ground and then it’s attached to some sort of pulley that you elevate it when needed?

While I like the shower I'm confused, at the beginning Lou said the one between the containers didn't get used because it was difficult to use and there's no hot water... the new one is more difficult and inconvenient to use and still no hot water and you'll potentially have to stand on ice if the water on the small deck freezes.

This just looks like torture to use on a regular day 😅 just seems like another solution for the summer, not for the winter.. 🥶 to me at least. is there no way to somewhat isolate the outhouse? Its such a lovely structure

How am I the first comment today? Even when you are building things I don’t plan to build, it’s so interesting, calming, and inspiring. My little fam is planning our move out of the big city onto some land this summer, we hope to build a mini subsistence farm/ranch/homestead and you and your fam are huge inspiration for me. I’ve been watching since Berlin, so I’ve loved watching your dreams morph and change with each season of your life. Thanks for sharing the journey!

Wouldn't it be nicer to have a bucket full of warm water than cold running shower to wash up in the winter?
I would make some hot water on the stove...
Or you could try boiling Japanese style drum can bath outside with firewood, maybe. No plumbing needed! You stand on wooden slates inside the can to avoid burns.

How about branching out the shower from the main pipe...when you want to use the shower close off the main pipe outlet and the water will flow out of the shower. Hope I explained it good...lol

You are so clever Lou I love watching you build. Just a thought if the pipe continues to freeze due to being elevated up the tree, could you leave it on the ground and then when you want a shower hoist it up with a rope tie from the branch above? x

Not sure if this would work in your environment but RUclipsrs @NomadicMovement used a Ram Pump (powered by the water) to pipe their water from a spring up a hill. You might want to check it out as an option.

Build a proper bathroom with heat. You're doing the most to get the least function. You need something that isn't risking hypothermia when used in the winter and should be much closer to the house.

Why don’t you get a smaller shipping container and make a proper bathroom? Showering outside in the winter is not the solution. There are many better options then this.

don't you think you're wife and your son deserves a heated shower especially when you live in a place where it's snowing or freezing
