I followed your tutorial, managed to get the hotshoe switch un-stuck. Unfortunately camera won't turn on now, any ideas/suggestions where I went wrong? I'm guessing I didn't reconnect one of the switches or cables properly. Any help, gladly appreciated.

Most likely the switch of the memory card reader or the battery door is damaged... they are small switches which senses if the doors are open or closed. If the switches are damaged, you can short them, so the camera would always see the doors closed, and it would turn on right after you insert the battery.
If the switches are fine, then check if all the flat cables are connected inside the camera.
