Dude, my moral compass tells me to run like hell but my musical compassion tells me I'm in the right place
To Brian and Michael, you are an inspiration to me and my brother. We are musical siblings too, playing your songs together on our guitars, jamming together and belting out our favorite twigs ballads. Your music is a beacon of hope, a true ode to the greatest music of the past, yet an exploration of new concepts. Thank you both for your devotion. I’ll look forward to this new vid, and as Tiny Tim said, “oh, isn’t this a lovely band? And what a thrill it is to have them play for me!”
Great words.. listen to the bands that the bands you listen to listened to and then the bands that those bands Listened to then you get the the core of all that. It's a beautiful thing
@@whitehair8824 the journey of the music snob. As old as time itself. I raise my glass
“it’s cool but I like their old shit better”
I like this better im just playing u see
@@Sinwillfindyou you didn't get what I ment man..
@@whitehair8824 you still don’t get I was saying. I was making a joke about myself based on your comment. Im a self admitted music snob and I was just taking the piss. I love agree with and understand yr comment. I forget sarcasm doesn’t translate or I dunno what but I’m always mistakenly pissing people off.
I'm a musician on long island, so obviously the lemon twigs have been a big inspiration for me being that they're from a town not far from my own. I also go to an arts high school, and I showed my teacher a lemon twigs song for one of our assignments. It was a song from the newest album, and my teacher kept curiously looking at the album cover. Eventually he says "I think one of them was a student here." After some asking around, I found out that Brian D'addario went to Long Island High School for the Arts. The very same school I now attend. Brian, if you happen to see this comment, Jerry Nobile says hi. And so does Dale Stuckenbruck.
Can't wait! "Songs For the General Public" was the best thing about 2020! Cheers to the Lemon Twigs 🍻🍻
please, ill pay for more footage from this session.
The true meaning of Ashammed's lyrics is deep and esoteric. Especially the last sentence seems to determine all the meanings.
Would you mind sharing your thoughts? I think it's an amazing song but I'm definitely missing something. I'm no square but I'm sure the song has to have a different meaning than "incest is ok". I understand it if it's just a story. But still I would wonder what you're thoughts are.
@@blistabliss The way I personally interpret it, it’s not specifically about incest, but the right to do whatever you want with your one life as long as you’re not causing direct harm to others. Does your personal moral view give you the right to decide what two consensual adults may do behind closed doors (incest without childbirth for example)?
If a brother and a sister fall in love, it may appear as insane to a lot of people, but what direct harm do they actually inflict by choosing to do what makes them happy? And who has the right to decide that it is in fact “wrong”? The message could as well apply to any other sexuality between consenting adults, or just following your dreams in general, without the intent to cause harm (“always doing something I really didn’t mean to”).
In that sense, it’s way bigger than the question of incest. It’s a rather deep philosophical question about moral and whose moral is entitled to be in charge. And how we limit each other’s only chance to do what we want to do, based on vague and diffuse ideas.
This is just my take on the song. I’m not sure what Michael was thinking or how anyone else interprets it. :-)
@@blistabliss In an interview with the Japanese music magazine "rockin'on", Brian said
"I don't like to criticize people according to my own standards.
"What you see in this song is people who are struggling in a broken and complicated situation, and it's very painful.
The song doesn't have a judgmental stance, it's a loving song with compassion and pity."
My view.
"The character in 'Ashamed' feels like she is struggling with guilt.
She opens and closes her mind. She asks herself questions over and over again, telling herself, "I'm not ashamed." She is not sure, unable to say with her heart, "I am not ashamed.
I think the theme is about the connection between people, the way they feel, love in its various forms, heavy and painful things, and distorted love that is hard to accept.
@@Nerkin610 I think your interpretation is very well thought and I think is the real esoteric answer. But I also think there's a more general aspect to it that I just wrote in another comment but yes I would add your conclusion to mine which is "I learned Mike's short answer for what's your inspiration for your songs like (whatever other song was asked) or ashamed. Mike's answer was "the word is cesspool". But basically the conclusion I've came to is that there is a song by Kate Bush called "the kick inside" which is a really gnarly song that Kate has said is the sister characters suicide note to her brother/lover so that he wouldn't have to deal with their shame of her becoming pregnant anymore so she ended it for them both by taking her life. In no way am I saying Michael ripped her song off. In the ama he also said it was a song that he just started writing and finished in "5 minutes". So it's interesting sometimes difficult to write about something like incest buts it's not like it doesn't exist or that strange things like a story like this don't or have never happened. So basically I was looking for a reason the song was written and the truth is there is no reason and that actually (even lyrically) basically explains the song. It's a song about incest it came to Michael while he was writing and Brian really liked it as do I. I don't think there are trying to be controversial. It's just a song that's about a taboo subject and certainly doesn't really have a moral. But I guess lines like "and the parents lose their minds. But don't you think they have no right" were what made me seek out some secret meaning but I think that Michael just wrote what he wrote and that line could be thought of as the characters thinking or the song could be sung through a narrator that thinks incest is okay. But no I don't think it's that deep I think Mike just wrote something that's provocative with less intention than more." But again I think now that you brought it up the song is about the philosophy of morality and at the same time making absolutely zero opinion negative or positive about incest which to some would indicate a positive view of incest but no it is uhh gosh I'm not smart enough to remember how to put it but basically asking the question "what is morality" while staying essentially neutral
Thanks for your input yall! I just hadn't seen any good discussion on the song and more people that literally don't even pay attention or are to young/naive to even notice what it's about and that's a testament to how beautiful of a song it is regardless! Very interesting stuff. Now expanding (let me say I think no matter what there is no definite meaning to the song or most songs and that's part of what differentiates songs from poetry or other art forms is that they are often spontaneous and or up for interpretation) but one subtext that as I've precluded could have been subconscious or is simply not true is that: there could be making a for lack of a better word comparison of the "morality" of non cis sexuality (lgbtq etc) to the possible greater amount of incestuous cis relations that was almost common place in the distant past, not so distant past as well as the present. Again I just think it's an interesting discussion and song and am in no way trying to put words in Michael's mouth and I hope Michael doesn't mind people discussing the song as long as it's not to far out of context although if it was my song I might say "it's just a song there's not much reason to read into it at all". But I think writing a "controversial" song is more and more rare let alone hard to do. Glad we're discussing it as long as it's fair to the writer though.
So,so fine.I.am with tears...

this is such a beautiful song. it’s both one of my favorites of yours and one of my all time favorite songs. you both are such huge inspirations to me and my music, and you are Phenomenal songwriters (possibly some of the best songwriters of this generation). you and your music have made a tremendous impact on my life, and partially because of your influence i’ve gotten into vintage fashion & have gotten into so many artists (like big star & leonard cohen). i would not be the same person had i not discovered your music. thank you for what you do, sincerely.
I'm glad you found big star and Leonard Cohen! But dress however you want. Jk I'm just breakin balls. I'd just think they'd be happier you found new bands than new clothes but they do dress awesome! peace and love!
Btw do you have any thoughts on the songs meaning? I love it too but find it quite perplexing
@@blistabliss i’ve heard some people interpret it as being about incest ??? hence the “when the little brother and sister make it with each other” line . and that’s kinda what i think as well? but i could be totally wrong.
@@serendipityrow oh yes that's of course what it's about. I just didn't understand why. But Mike said he wrote it just to write it because it's a real nonetheless tragic thing but never written about. And he says he wrote in like 5 minutes or something. I believe him. Cuz there's not really any other explanation.
@@serendipityrow listen to Kate bush "the kick inside" I'm pretty sure he wrote ashamed based on that song
Fucked up lyrics LOL
But damn, that's a masterpiece of a song... Thanks guys ! Amazing performance as always !!!

Les Enfants terribles ;)
Great song vocals sound a bit like country roads take me home
Hi from France! I love this band and these brothers, I got their 2 previous CDs, but Michael's voice here seems to have a bit of covid throat sore or something, not just the emotional tremolos for this very touching song. Still, great song, both the lyrics and the tune, great filming, and of course, lovely lads.
Interesting how much society has changed in its views about many subjects.
This is a narrative about people having one view or another about a taboo subject.
Gutsy to make a song about it.....many will have sick regurgitate in their throats but this is art in its purest expression.......to question life and love.
There are different types of incest.
I think the one you are lyrical about is when an (adopted and unknown) brother and sister from different families, fall for each other.....and then later on find out they're actually blood related.
It's been documented quite alot.....I can see why there might be this attraction, maybe similar thoughts and behaviors mirroring each other.
Keep up the interesting narratives with the very best music.
I'm so inspired by you guys....you've given me my MOJO back.
Can someone share with me there thoughts on what the song means or its purpose or where it's coming from? Is it just a dark story? Or does it come from a story they heard? I would love to know what anyone thinks.
someone on Instagram said its the "incest anthem"....
Taken from a Twigs Reddit AMA: "The world is a cesspool"

Total rip-off of Auld Lang Syne!!....Is it supposed to be an “ironic” copy of it or wot??
@@mjh5437 I like it though. Love the Twigs
Is this Auld Lang Syne?
Surely based on it.
Aye. My first thoughts too.
Why did you use the SCOTTISH Hogmanay ballad 'Auld Lang Syne', evocative reasons, also Anthony and Johnsons happening here too. Take a horrendous problem and romantize it?
Incest rock😍😂👏🏼
The best song about incest since Kate Bush with The Kick Inside
Michael voice is really good. I still don't understand why sometimes he sings in such a ... bad way.
When he sets out to sing well, he stands out quite a bit.
Right??
Errr incest is immoral and they should be ashamed ffs
old langs sign???
