Hi. I'm not your target audience. I fell asleep, woke up to your show, and kind of got sucked into the discussion. I want to comment on your Barbie segment. First you need to know about me. I'm a 61 yr old Puerto Rican woman who loved Barbies as a child and collects them as an adult. I grew up in a time when we (women) were just really starting to come into our own. I was a bra burner, while my mother, a strict Southern Baptist, truly believed women were subservient to men. As an adult, I broke all the rules of conformity. My politics, I worked on the Bernie Sanders campaign in 2016, then voted for Trump in 2020. I say all this in order to paint a picture of where my perspective is coming from. Okay, did it occur to any one of you that you may have outgrown the wonder it takes to appreciate a movie like Barbie? Barbie really is for kids. The adult themes you overanalyse are offered in the story in order to have an avenue to draw in parents. No different than the adult jokes and innuendo stuffed into a movie like Toy Story or Minions. If you were to make a movie about the Masters of the Universe, He-man would be the star. All other characters are "accessories" for the main character. They are nothing more than vehicles for children to manipulate the narrative of their play and serve the storyline of their hero, He-man. In a MOTU movie, your hero would have at best, 3-4 variants of himself. In a Barbie universe, it would stand to reason that there would be hundreds of Barbie variants. She's been around so long and has seen so many transformations that it would be fitting. So yes, in this universe Ken is nothing more than an accessory to be manipulated to Barbie's will. There is no anti-man message here. The story was brilliantly crafted to send a message to LITTLE girls that you can be anything you want. Barbie is more than a doll, she's an idea, a belief that although the doll can be relegated to a box, women can not. It told its story without condemning men for Barbie's situation. It also did not look to men to solve her issues. She was capable enough to make decisions for herself. No child writes "nasty letters". It is adults who have lost the wonder and imagination of children who force themselves into worlds not intended for them. Please stop projecting adult hangup and politics onto children. Their window of wonder is short enough.
Baggage Claim makes a compelling case for anime's lasting success. Although anime has its flaws, it promotes universal values that outweigh the superficial, meta-focused message drabble.
Exactly! Most anime isn't even good (I would know, I've watched *a lot*), and yet it's hard not to extol its virtues compared to what our mainstream western media is giving us.
51:24 That's exactly it, Disparu is right. They're reducing "The Message" little by little until audiences will consider it acceptable and start $pending again. If a movie or a series is good but still 1% woke I won't support it with a dime.
@@danielt.8573 That's how I am with games, too. There are more than enough older games that can last me a lifetime without needing to suffer the smallest amount of woke in recent games.
I agree. I unsubscribed from a channel the other day because the content creator said that woke is a "lazy" criterion for entertainment - as though we should invest any money, thought or effort in something made by someone who believes that every normal person in the history of the world was evil and/or mentally ill.

1:24:55 the whole conversation after this, is why i love all of your content. My wife gets upset with me, she buys into the bs, and says "why don't you give as much value to what i have to say as you do the people on the internet?" and this is why. she doesnt believe these very core and evidentially true things. even when Disparu was disagreeing saying "i am superior to a murderer" i agree with him b/c the murderer gave up his right to his inherent value by ending another life. its also true not all people are equal, there is a base value we give so as to prevent the justification of murder, but some people have more to offer. heck, just adding to the human population is a benefit, so if you cant do anything else you could do that. And just as not all people are of the same value its obvious that not all ideas are of equal value, not all cultures are of equal value. I love my wife, but what i ended up saying to her was "i will listen to anything anyone has to say, if i think they are starting from a foundation of truth. i may disagree on some aspects, but the things you are wanting me to value have no value and are based on lies and manipulations. i see no value in it and will not waist my time."
That's just another example of Disparu being more fundamentally aware of the situation. He understands that the universal values this panel likes to talk about are actually not universal, therefore power is needed to obtain the values we like.
Avengers "down with democracy" ad was hilariously cringe! What in the heck, who wrote that, who thought it was a good idea? I shared Savvy's outburst of confusion, but after the initial "wtf" I honestly think the whole "down with democracy" was a knowing wink to all the college educated people who are or have in the past been infatuated or at least flirted with revolutionary ideas. It's just so on the nose, but they don't mind if we know that they're fortifying elections, they don't mind if we know that they think less of us. They still feel powerful even as the pendulum is reversing.
What surprised me is that Robert Downey Jr. was part of it. I always thought of him as a highly intelligent and "common sense" figure. Turns out he's just as much of a tool as many other Hollywood actors. I'm not someone who necessarily judges people by what they vote for but how the hell would he be so oblivious to all of the lying and corruption, or even worse, know about it and still partake in the Truman show.

Sarcastic, aloof, arrogant, and dismissive, is seen as "powerful" in modern storytelling narratives. I'm not certain if it's explicitly part of modern '3rd wave' feminism, but it does seem to feature very prominently in so-called "fem coded" stories that center around over-empowered female characters. The 'strong woman' archetype in its modern form, is invariably portrayed as utterly unflappable to the point of apathy, from the perspective of the audience. I suppose this is because modern feminism classifies emotional females as weak, and encourages female protagonists to ape stoic male heroic figures. What is missing from these characters, and what the classical stoic male figures possess which makes them compelling, is a moral code external to himself. The classic heroic male may be silent and stone-faced, but will bring terrible violence with dogged determination upon anything that stands in the way of upholding his code; THAT shows what is emotionally motivating him, his actions are how his emotions are displayed for the audience, and defending that code is how his character grows & develops. Reserved, puritan, stoic Solomon Kane annihilating a clan of vampire creatures in a bloody rage after they slaughtered the African tribe he'd grown fond of, then renewing his sorely strained faith upon realizing victory. No exposition of his feelings is necessary, there is no question of his motivation; THAT is how you portray a thematically powerful figure in literature. By subverting his 'agency' to a higher purpose than his own personal fulfillment. But that is incompatible with modern feminism, which is solely focused on venerating feminine 'agency' at all times, in all ways; the only way such an intrinsically selfish character can grow, is by becoming a god (ie Ms. Marvel) or destroying everything in the setting that would challenge her (ie killing rivals or overthrowing society) Obviously this second character has no hope of being anywhere near as compelling as the first. Now, when you compare that sort of exclusively selfish, ruthlessly ambitious character arc to even older classical literature, an interesting thing occurs; it's Lucifer's character arc. It is absolutely the destructive blueprint for aspiring evil villains...and this is what modern Hollywood is now consistently putting forward as its protagonists. The entire creative infrastructure of popular culture needs to be burned out, and its players blacklisted going forward. A new generation of artists trained in classical artistic forms need to be trained up, so we can get past this evil-venerating Post Modern poison, and back to works that benefit the human spirit.
The "strong woman" ironically misses and/or denigrates all of the actual traditional strengths of women. Their guardianship of their communities, their upholding of social mores, performing as the hand of soft power to PREVENT the harsher hand of law or violence from becoming necessary. Maybe if little Michael the shoplifter down the street had been shamed, and his parents embarrassed because of his petty theft when he was a child, he wouldn't have gone on to grand larceny as an adult. Women abandoned that social role entirely to the point that most forget we ever had it, and have no understanding how crucial it was. The feminine strengths of endurance and perseverance aren't showy enough for Hollywood. It's true that men tend not to appreciate them--hence the derisive chick flick--but now women despise them too, leaving an entire realm of human experience entirely unrepresented. There's the redeeming strength of a mother's love, and the role of MOTHER, period: one of the most formative relationships any human will ever have, and Hollywood loathes it. The strength of a woman as a mother, empowered by her love for her children; also no part of Hollywood's endless lineup of girlbosses. For a population so obsessed with representation, they have no interest whatsoever in ACTUAL women's ACTUAL lives.
Good write up. If you want to expedite the solution, though, you will need a hard, dystopian almost, dictatorship. I don't think I'm OK with that. But the slower way is to voice our opinions, make our stories, our art and not just ignore the destructive one but make its faults bare by criticizing it. Looks like that grass roots solution is slowly getting on its way.
@@angharad256 Without a father there is no mother. Without a father the child grows distraught regardless of a mother’s “powers”. What you’ve successfully done here is craft your fantasy interpretation of what you wish women to be, however this is exactly what they are not. What stabilizes anyone in society is masculinity. Femininity only coddles, which matters for infants, not toddlers, teens, or young adults.
@@tomaszwota1465 Why do you think it would need a dictatorship? Imagine you (as an individual, without generalizing about any group you may be in) are really good at A, have no real hope of being good at B, yet in the past have felt pressure to focus your life on B and belittle everything about A. I don't think it would take dystopia or coercion to convince you to play to your own strengths and stop futilely trying to be something you're not - just a sense that there are plenty of people who value you for who and what you are.
@Justice-ian why dictatorship? Because if you want wide, sweeping changes in society, you have to force them. Edit: unless you go the slow way, which your cause vulnerable.
The MCU can never again reach the heights of the first half (Iron Man - Infinity War). Endgame, with it's stupid time travel "we've painted ourselves into a corner and didn't plan a proper ending" conceit, ironically, signaled the end of the good times and it's been downhill ever since. Even if - IF - they reboot the entire universe, we the fans have already seen everything they've done to the characters, all the storylines they've utterly desecrated and ruined. That can't be unseen, that can't be forgotten. And it's us fans, the comic book fans that have read the comics for decades and helped build the brand, who are the core fanbase (at least we were). The comic books have followed the movies and push "the message" over good story telling, so the OG fans like us don't read the comics anymore (apart from an occasional issue to see if things are still terrible - spoiler: they are). So who exactly will be going to see the movies even if they reboot? They will never win us back over because we can't trust them, the same as a spouse who abused you and tries to make amends can never be trusted again if you're foolish enough to stay. Disney and "the message" didn't just kill the MCU, they killed Western superhero comic books media in general. They aimed at a mythical "modern audience" that don't consume the product, but they alienated their actual paying customers.
The cracks in the MCU started after Winter Soldier because Winter Soldier was the last Marvel MCU movie. After that is when Disney took over completely. For me, the first Iron Man is still the best one of all the movies.
@@Kalbuir66 I don't agree that the cracks started to appear that early. The message wasn't pushed to the forefront that early on. They were still concentrating a lot more on the actual stories at that point (Winter Soldier is a great movie BTW). Yes, they had a few less than impressive movies after WS (looking at Age of Ultron and Thor Ragnarok to name a couple of big offenders), but the build up to Infinity War - overall - was good, maybe even great. The 1st Guardians movie and Civil War were both way better than I'd expected (CW especially). Infinity War felt like the epic event we'd been led to expect. Unfortunately, Endgame was garbage and they ruined the entire thing. I think the 1st Avengers movie (2012) is probably my favourite. It proved they could do a superhero team up movie without it being completely cheesy, and it was a good old fashioned "good guys vs comic book villain" movie. And all the characters looked like they looked in the comics. I rewatched it last year to see if I was suffering from rose-tinted glasses, but I think it still holds up as a fun popcorn action movie. No messaging or preaching, just exactly what it needed to be.
@@Great_Watt Cracks don't mean "the message". I'm talking about the quality of the movies, the tone of the movies and characters. There is a stark difference between the Marvel MCU movies and the Disney MCU movies.
Exactly. Was the death going to be overnight? Absolutely not. But their continued trajectory in this direction of pursuing an audience that doesn't exist, or even if we say it does exist its not in the size big enough to justify the massive budgets, was always going to lead to its decline, on top of the fact of how Endgame ended. Endgame I thought was a "decent enough" conclusion (Despite the writing problems), and what I saw afterwards just confirmed my thoughts, and I just stopped paying to go see them. Because I knew they had no real concrete plan going forward, and I could tell the writing was declining (I noticed it right after Infinity War, with Black Panther and Captain Marvel, and everything afterwards continued the trend). I did notice though with the latest show in Agatha, somehow it got the most deluded fans yet. Show didn't chart anywhere, what figures we do know are nothing impressive for Disney + shows, but "Oh the show was actually good and the Chuds didn't care to talk about it because they can't grift off of a manufactured controversy". (Because apparently we just don't like content because we're told to, right? There's not been a pattern here for us to notice and stop caring?) Because apparently a show that does nothing to explain why we should care about a one-off villain from a show from 3 years prior that most people thought the ending of was lackluster, is secretly the best MCU show ever made. No, most didn't watch it because they didn't care, more and more of the MCU's former fans have STOPPED caring after all the bad shows and films. Ms. Marvel was not a terrible show compared to the others, but it was so boring that NOBODY cared to finish it. But yet I didn't see a small army of fans trying to pretend there was some hidden agenda behind most of these people not bothering to finish or fully cover it.
"Kamala Harris - Down With Democracy" sounds like something to make one NOT vote for her, which is funny because it's an accurate slogan to what her political side wants.

Aubrey Plaza is a niche actress. Give her a role where she needs to be a snarky deadpan jerk with a heart of gold and it's fine. Anything else and it doesn't work. See also Ryan Reynolds.
Depends on the guys you focus on. Aubrey isn’t wildly attractive, she’s simply easier to attain for men who possess less options - so they obsess over her rather than an objectively more attractive woman; she’s a more realistic mating target/fantasy for average men.

I keep hearing from stars and creatives how "Diverse & Inclusive" their contemporary shows and movies are that have been "updated for modern audiences" and how excited people are to see it. Strangely though, I never hear those people talking about memorable scenes or quotes from them or talking about how good it was in great detail. Certain styles of storytelling these days seems to showcase a lot of surface level diversity stereotypes and psychobabble masquerading as thoughtful and profound dialogue, but it lacks any depth, substance or impact. I don't think this style of production will age very well and is quite disposable entertainment i.e. it won't have much of a re-watch value. It's so frustrating to watch at times because there are great stories that could really showcase "diversity and inclusion" in a way that includes everyone fairly and not at the expense of shaming another group in society in order to achieve this.

@@danielt.8573 That's how I am with games, too. There are more than enough older games that can last me a lifetime without needing to suffer the smallest amount of woke in recent games.
I agree.

Marvel) or destroying everything in the setting that would challenge her (ie killing rivals or overthrowing society)
Obviously this second character has no hope of being anywhere near as compelling as the first.

There's not been a pattern here for us to notice and stop caring?)
Because apparently a show that does nothing to explain why we should care about a one-off villain from a show from 3 years prior that most people thought the ending of was lackluster, is secretly the best MCU show ever made.

Agatha All Along turned out much better than I expeected. It's a pretty good show. It didn't start out great, but it got better as it went on.
