i just apply the generations of TECH they had access to when developing "older games" to the games now....that essentially cannot be ran on max even with various new GPU....bc theyre essentially made to be so "cutting edge" that apparently un-released 2022 gpus are more ideal for these few AAA games. PER EX. Paired with sam on big navi and resizable bar for ampere. Other gpus are not supported for these features with "supported" titles as it is. Perhaps "now" devs are finding ways of implementing it and helping but more or less GPU companies like amd and nvidia already have to lobby/pay to put their own dev teams inhouse with these game devs/publishers to implement their various "cutting edge" features with each new year or gpu gen. As it is....so at GAME LAUNCH DAY the GPU benchmarkers/charts can sell more GPUS... lul. Ironic as it sounds. Prime ex would be ubisoft recently with amd...FC6 was free with my 5900x that i bought launch month. They delayed the FC6 by a year....bc its somewhat apparent AMD wants more FPS "gap" with their cpu/gpu combos than the "competition" at launch...as if nvidia/intel etc arent adaptable....the same way FC5 had some MADE FOR AMD bs....at launch screen when zen2 got owned by intel in that game...Same to intel laptops vs amd laptops in FC5 a game seemingly made for ryzen or ryzen SMT. That really wasnt nor mattered. CAUSE optics wise big picture....FC6 is now launching close to the 12th gen intel cpus....and same with BF2042.

@@defeqel6537 it is. It is based on the number of calls to the GPU. Games are configured for a set number of calls. So if a Game needs around 2GB of VRAM reserved then it needs to make 8 separate calls. The game is programed to make those 8 calls. A game with Smart Access Memory in mind will be programmed to make a single call in that instance. Assassins' Creed and Godfall were both programed with SAM in mind.

Thanks for testing this. Could you also test how ReBar scales within the Nvidia 30-series stack as well. I have seen anecdotal results which indicate that the 3090 benefits much more than the 3080 from ReBar. This leads me to guess that perhaps the total amount of VRAM plays a role in how effective ReBar is and may mean the 3060 would similarly get an outsized benefit from its 12 GB. Yeah I don't know what they did to the Microsoft Store, but it just breaks games now. I tried to play Gears 5 recently. Downloaded through the Microsoft Store, would go to launch it, the game would get to the screen that asks what components I want to install, put a pop-up on screen telling me I need updates, and then close itself. Microsoft Store said I had the latest version, no updates available. I do some searching online, find out about the Xbox app, get that, and that finds more updates for Gears 5. Download those, then the game works for a single day. The next day, it's broken again, trying to launch it just takes me to some random app in the Microsoft Store that I already have. I had to completely uninstall the game, and then install it via the Xbox app instead. Then the game finally worked without any issues going forward.
If Microsoft was going to ditch the Microsoft Store for games and launch the Xbox app, I wish they would just say on the Microsoft Store if you try to buy or install a game that "Hey, don't use this store! Get this new Xbox app!" Would have saved me so much frustration if they just communicated that.

considering how much an OC does for AAA games....im fine with just having a mild oc for multiplayer online non e-sports, Aggressive OC for games like CP2077 and rdr2 for squeezing out FPS, and stock/quiet for esports as profiles in afterburner. Than having to go into bios or some re-boot only to turn on/off aspects. Its not worth the effort/time. When profile 1-5 on afterburner get the job done. Esp on an AIB like a 3070 strix since its a 3080 strix cooler for an easier to cool gpu/vrm/ram....then again im sure thers some way since my gpu and others are duel bios....to simply change one of the bios modes to SAM on....SAM off....yet it would still need a re-boot but thats about as easy/work around as i could come to. Since boots arent that bad/long these days. The most ideal i could think of would be a duel boot where you have a drive for SAM games, and just log in or boot the drive with SAM enabled and your regular drive for esports etc use. But I seem to care a lot less about FPS gain "implementations" these days, Since the tri sli 8800ultra vs 9800gtx vs quad sli 9800gx2 days.....where ppl were trying to show off how their systems could play games on maxed at 60-100fps as EPIC feats of effort....Thats back when i cared about min/max aspects or any type of software/hardware breakthru to create more effective FPS....and since then NVIDIA has phased out SLI...Think 650ti boost sli costing 4-500$ out pacing a gtx 680+. For less cost. No sli on 750ti or 1050ti yet supported on gtx 950...XD damn shame nvidia's been playing nonsense games with the consumer off top.

One thing never mentioned is that to enable Resizable BAR, you have to disable the Compatibility Support Module (CSM) in the BIOS. To do that you have to have a Windows 10 installation on the newer GPT partitioned HDD not the older MBR standard. Basically you have to be running in full UEFI mode and not using CSM to simulate the old BIOS standard. CSM comes enabled by default, and you may have to reinstall Windows 10 in order switch to GPT disk and UEFI mode required for RBAR.

    • @PainterVierax

I wonder if the higher increase in performance on RDNA2 GPUs vs Ampere is due to ReBar helping to offset the lower memory bus/bandwidth on the RDNA2 GPUs. While Ampere doesnt have that same memory bandwidth issue. Not to mention that apparently their drivers already utilize the CPU for scheduling more than AMDs drivers.

considering all that IMPLEMENTATION and rastorizaton on big navi....is to merely Obliterate/compete with nvidia solely at FHD/1080p.....XD where-as esports titles arent played on max nor beyond 1080p in most cases.....amd's optics on this are largely IRONIC. And as stated at 21:9 1440P or 4k....nvidia wins even with less ram...inherently due to their membandwidth. ALL that aside....my friend gets a 3060xc from evga for 399$ sticker around 430-440$ after tax/processing direct from nvidia......has a 1070. On a chart its not much of an upgrade....but i pushed them towards it bc our friend(3rd member) was the one with the evga email to purchase and they had already gotten their own 3080. I told them to get the 3060 bc they can sell their 1070 from 300$ at the least if not 400$. While still getting a "bump" in 1440p....they have a 6700k though...which was also perfect...bc i told them a 3060ti is probably the highest theyd want to go pre uber bottleneck or waste of a 700$+ gpu and purchase/diminishing returns. They got all hyped that it had 12gb vs their 1070s 8gb. And i told them they would rarely see 12gb utilized in 1440p. As you said their drivers are more opt for cpu scheduling but with the ram speeds and probably stock 6700k on air. They wouldnt get "equal" to the FPS charts in AAA games theyre accustomed to seeing with ampere or even big navi...bc those sytems are typically done with zen3/intel 10th/11th gen. To show the max potential of ampere or big navi...even then a 5ghz+ intel shows even more fps. As amd has openly stated theyve needed these aspects to literally COMPETE/remain relavant to nvidia...we really cant expect certain aspects to be "namestays" as IMO there merely implementations AMD saw fit to "compete" or Stay in the picture...intel is on the come up as well. I cant expect to have to buy an amd cpu etc ecosystem just to "maximize" a single player playthrough its somewhat insane/ironic of a suggestion in 2021 if not 2022/2023 as new cpus launch....for amd to think/expect to have their GPU compete solely on this basis. Paired with the encoder on nvidia gpus being a selling point along with nvidia reflex in supported games. AMD has gotten in bed with the consoles via lobby.....and now get to play trickledown API economics as the devs have no choice but to form their games around the operating capability of the damn CONSOLE APUS as far as how to get their game launched or the expectations of "SETTINGS" enabled to yield 120fps on 4k or 60 fps on 4k. The deves have to make their games around the 3700x/3800x and a 6600xt. IMO. As the pc returns to being the master race. BC its not like every dev/game is going to come out on vulkan and hit the ground running like doometernal. SADLY. And here AMD thinks ppl got FLAGSHIP 500-700$ 1080p monitors to drive and NEED 500$+ gpus to play cs:go or valorant off of....as ppl are making new builds to play just those games....amd is all caught up going "look we beat nvidia" to even provide a product as cheap as the 3060. g-sync and nv boost is exactly why the 1660s/1660ti sold so well to the esports playing demo....bc of cost to enable g-sync in varoius titles became viable as well as the cuts to various 144hz ips monitors being sub 200$. WTH does amd think everyone has a 1500$ starting budget these days and thats an "entry level BUILD" wth

      Quick and dirty results:
On AC Valhalla, which we know is a good performer, can you turn it off with those 2 settings.
Re-BAR on is an improvement across the board for max, avg (66->70fps), min 1% (50->52) and 0.1% (42-44).
      Running a 3060Ti with 1440p and 5900x on DDR4 3200MHz.
However when I check out older games... well, is it worth the time?
AC Oddessey probably benefit 1% from turning Re-BAR on... but the ingame benchmark has a wide spread of results so...
Shadow of Mordor benefits +3fps across the board, avg (151->154), min (80->83).
Batman Arkham Knight seems to lose 1%.
So whatever makes Re-BAR work, there probably isnt going to be many older games that really benefit.
But why would a game benefit? Maybe its DX12 only - and besides Valhalla, all other games ran DX11.
Maybe its beneficial for a lot of texture rendering/loading... and thats usually lighter for new hardware in older games.
I didnt test if turning it off completely changed numbers. Enabling ReBAR probably introduces a slight bit of overhead, apart from turning off the toggles.

Based on your testing it makes complete sense to enable SAM on an AMD platform since only one game showed decreased performance. This also confirms AMD's assertion that resizable BAR is not as easy to implement well as you might think or that Nvidia and Intel seemed to imply.
I also wouldn't describe AMD's announcement of SAM as a marketing ploy. It's a feature that they implemented for their customers that no other company had done. Why is it that not Nvidia or Intel even talk about resizable BAR until AMD came out with SAM if it was a feature set that had long been "built-in" to current platforms? AMD put the work into developing SAM to get free performance uplift to their customers. Something neither Nvidia or Intel cared about doing. That is not until AMD offered free performance first.

ReBAR is a h/w platform level feature which is enabled or disabled at system's boot and configured at OS startup. You can't "disable" it from driver if it's enabled. What you can do is manage the CPU visible VRAM heap size - and make it the default 256MB which is the same as what a CPU sees on a platform with ReBAR disabled. HOWEVER this means that ReBAR is still enabled on the system level which could lead to some differences in performance simply because of how Windows is managing VRAM allocations.
Also SAM =/= ReBAR in a same way as Freesync =/= VESA Adaptive Sync. SAM is a HW+SW specific implementation of ReBAR support in AMD's GPU drivers. There are a lot a driver can do with memory heap management which would affect performance. This is pretty clear from your results even where NV sees no performance change while AMD sees some +10% - this is a result of driver doing memory allocation optimizations in case of one vendor.
It would also be cool if you'd use Nvidia Profile Inspector to actually enable ReBAR support in titles which don't have it - and disable it in those which do but show performance regressions. This would allow you and us to get better understanding of why these results are like they are.

Can we check if it scales better on RTX 3090 before we put a pin in it?
I think I am a bit shocked but not surprised. To what I understand from reading the documents around RBAR, when you lock a portion of VRAM for Transfer purposes, GPU is unable to use that specific area for store and recall purposes as a buffer. Which means that now we have less usable VRAM.
So if a game needs a high amount of VRAM to run on lower VRAM cards, RBAR will not size the transfer unit to be higher, because RBAR will actually hurt the performance in that case by reducing the usable VRAM available to the GPU. Which means that in general higher VRAM cards will scale better with RBAR, and games (at resolutions) which don't pin the VRAM usage at max will scale better. I think we just saw a proof of that.
Plus, it can only help in cases where GPU is underfed, and has extra cycles that are normally getting wasted. We know that nVidia GPUs have the power, and I don't think that is the reason for lower scaling, I think it is lack of VRAM that is hurting it.

I've updated every driver on every device to the very latest but no joy. In LinuxMint 20 it wakes up just fine from sleep, so there is something that Win 10 doesn't like about the x570 chipset. BTW, I am even running the latest Asus BIOS, too!

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I wonder what the effects on frame timing is for perceived smoothness or if theres even any real difference between the two as far as that goes.

Are you guys gonna compare with a 3090 with enabled rebar to see if it see the negative effects? I havent had a chance to run with my 3090 but im a bit curious if its even worth the trouble to flash bios.

I had to convert system disk from MBR to GPT, then update BIOS, update Graphic card's firmware, disable CSM from BIOS, enable Re-B and Encode 4G from BIOS before I could confirm that it is enabled so it wasn't exactly straight forward in my case (also BIOS refused to be updated and had to use q flash plus to force update but that's another story)

apparently resizeable bar with hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling ON in the windows setting is worse than when HAGS is off. thoughts?

Could the games which were whitelisted but didnt see performance gains at higher resolutions maybe get some with more VRAM (ie the 3090?)

Did you try checking the hash rate benchmarks between the old firmware and the new ReBar one? Maybe that was the real reason for this "update" 🤔

The new firmware/vbios from EVGA made my 3080 unstable. AC:Odyssey keeps crashing, and I got BSODs when Resizable Bar was enabled.

I saw someone reporting that enabling Nvidia ReBar causes 3DMark to bluescreen the PC sometimes when collecting system info. The feature is still way too buggy on Nvidia, it should be labelled as beta or even alpha.

do be careful updating vbios on EVGA, this can void warranty if you update the "stock" bios on the GPU and if your GPU has duel bios installed just update the "non stock version" as this doesnt void warranty on duel bios GPU's from EVGA (same applies to gigibyte but they void "any" bios updates period on the products)

FYI ReBAR looks to be supported in the previous AMD cards as well. I was able to enable ReBAR on my 5600XT with my 3700X using the latest Mobo BIOS on my Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming. Confirmed in the drivers both in Windows and Linux that its working.

I wonder if the performance degradation has anything to do with the way Nvidia gpus handle scheduling (i.e. don't and rely on the cpu)

pair that with the way zen cpus utilize/access cache hell even ram.....and boy o boy.

Steve, can u test this on the 10900k OCed? My understanding is that ReBar allows the cpu to access more vram and different chipsets and cpus might access this a little differently. I have seen Linus's benchmark but he used an AMD cpu too. Just test the ones that shows regression and see if there's a difference.

Same architecture, so results in theory should be similar... but yeah. More incestigation is good, but so is sleeping, so hopefulky Steve take a nap before next benchrun :)

1:28 Well, I'm sacrificing my C drive as it was MBR since 2018 since it was my 1600 and X370's OS back then, lmao. And we need to use GPT drives in order to be able to use Resizeable BAR as it's only available on UEFI bios (which also available only to GPT drives). CSM is outdated.
I know that there is a way to switch from MBR to GPT without reinstalling windows, I've tried, but it didn't seem to work out. And since I've already upgraded my rig to 3600 last year and B550 last month, it's fine by me.
Good thing that I've had a habit of moving all of my windows datas (downloads, desktop, documents, etc) to my other drive so I'm only losing about 30-40% of my OS' data and most of them that I've actually lose aren't personal files. I only need to reinstall apps and drivers.

@Hardware Unboxed Any plans on testing this on intel including z390 boards as some boards have gotten updates for it? And i would also be very interested in resizable bar with DLSS on in games like death straiding that saw a performance loss. I would like to know if it gets worse or better in that scenario. No need for many games as theres not really many games with dlss support for now. maby add 1 that gains and death stranding that loses.

will it not be great to re-visit this once again to determine the performance benefit with all the usual games you test? We now have better hardware support and the feature seemed to have matured? I just enabled this on one of my games (unity game engine) my avg FPS changed from 150 to 190. RX5700XT, Ryzen 5900

Thx for this video.. I wanted to see some benchmarks to see if it was worth it for my RTX 3080.. Since I also play The Division 2, obviously not.. I did already update the bios on the videocard but will now disable it in my MB bios.. We'll check later again to see if Nvidia made any progress with this feature..
