So wish I could try this! There was a Chinese restaurant in Glenwood, IL., called "Dragon Inn" which our family and friends went too for like 40 years. They were known for their Zombie cocktails, which were so delicious and had a cult following among many people. If you had more than three of them, you literally turned into a Zombie, and a drooling one at that! Dragon Inn closed about 10 years ago and took their recipe with them. I've searched high and low trying to find a Zombie as good as theirs, but still haven't found one that compares in taste. I don't think their's had as many ingredients as yours, but I know they used 3 rums, with Meyer's Dark and Bacardi 151 among them. Seeing this cocktail brings back so many great memories (and a few not so great memories). Thanks!
This is a truly great cocktail. The overproof rum allows you to get a spirit-strength cocktail that still has prominent fresh fruit flavors, and the mint aroma really sets it off. Layers and layers of anise, cinnamon, fruit, oak, vanilla, almond-- everything. It's worth all the effort. That said, in the words of Combichrist, this shit will fuck you up.
Hahaha I laughed when you walked out dressed as an Angostura bottle! Amazing! Love the Zombie! Your recipe is almost identical to the one I made.. although I can’t find the Velvet Falernum so I use the Fee Brothers Falernum Syrup. Cheers!
Anderstura is back!! Definitely my all-time favorite costume! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 though the Gilliganesque tiki outfit comes in a close second 😂 another great video you two!!
Anders, thank you for posting the recipe for my favorite Zombie! My birthday was Halloween and it was the perfect present. Look forward to the day when we can return to Ward 8 and have one there....
Fantastic. The Angostura bitters costume is so cool. And the rest of the costumes are super cool. Cheers and thanks for sharing this wonderful classic!
Hey man, nice drinks you bring to your channel, I like your style as well. So far, you are my favourite. 👍 I've been a barman for the last 32 years. I just came home from work h 02:30am. Still making cocktails 💪🍹🍸✌️ still love my job. Ciao 🇮🇹
This cocktail is like the much and more complex precursor to the Long Island Iced Tea. It’s almost like a let’s throw things at the wall and see what sticks cocktails. Awesome Angostura cocktail! 🥃
Yeah there’s definitely a lot going on in this one! I do think the zombie is very balanced and surprisingly smooth for having so much alcohol involved. It sneaks up on you and will wipe you out. When I have a Long Island Iced Tea, on the other hand, I can tell I’m being punched in the face 😂
It's Valentines Day, 2023.. So thank you for the Halloween wishes Anders lol. Seeing you as a bottle of Angostura Bitters is hilarious because until watching this channel, I literally didn't know what that even was.
Could be the best Zombie video on You tube. Good job! My current rums and ingredients Jamaican - Appleton estate Signature (will be switching to Hampden Estate 8 Puerto Rican - Havana Club Anejo Clasico Demerara river overproof - Hamilton 151 (must have) or Lemon Heart 151 absinthe - American Fith sprits. It takes very little for it to show up on your taste buds. Max 2 dashes Dons mix - not sure if its 2 to 1 Grapefruit to cinnamon syrup or 1 to 2. I've used real maple syrup and was fine. does not seem to make Huge diff. Angostrura bitters (2 splashes) I agree this drink tastes far milder than how hard it hits. I would call it a "Cool Hand Luke" Smiles like a baby but bites like a Gator! :)
Ya! Plantation OFTD makes a great substitute, it actually is 1/3 guyana (demerara) rum, and is 138 proof which is close enough. Martin Cate helped make it. It's great!
Drank this on a pub crawl in Berlin. Very fuzzy memories after it. Remember a giant ballon being kicked around in the street. Thanks for stirring that memory, Anders!
I don’t recommend Smith and Cross in a Zombie. It works great in lots of things, but here it just took over and masked all the other flavors. I need to try it with Anders’ recommended rums. It did use Hamilton 151 as well
at my old job we used a recipe that was p much entirely wrong but one thing i did like was that we added blue curacao which gave it a green colour and the grenadine looked like blood. No idea where we got that recipe from, but it looked cool.
My all time favourite drink. Love it. If choosing falernum, I'd advise against the Monin one. Not great, imho. Taylor's is 'go to'. The drink also works very well with Pernod instead of absinthe. Enjoyed the vid - thanks for sharing the Zombie love.
Hey Anders ! Still here in 2023 , and still waiting for a homemade recipe for the falernum ! I'd love if you could do a falernum / cordial / shrubs video since i'm just getting into that ! Wish you the best , keep up the good fun !

Hi Anders although i'm new to your channel and to cocktails in general i have picked up some good tips and tricks from you already could you possibly tell me if you know of a good substitute for the hamilton 151 or lemon hart 151 as i live in Scotland we don't really get those brands here and I would like to keep it close to the drink as possible thanks Robert.
Looks delicious! Maybe a silly question, but where do you get such full sprigs of mint? I've been making some drinks with fresh mint and all I can find are those little plastic packages of 'fresh' mint or a Charlie-Brown-Christmas-tree-looking mint plant at the grocery store. Do you grow your own?
I had the same problem, here in Austria, usual supermarket franchises only have these small plastic bags of mint like you described. Then i went to a turkish-arab market, not only do they have these big branches of mint (for much less money btw), they also have a lot more and cheaper citrus fruits. Long story short, since i'm into Tiki drinks, i go to the turkish supermarket once a week. :)
I think you can use any overproof rum, in that one place I had this drink they even used Stroh 160 (a trashy Austrian rum-esque "thing" primarily used for making grog at ski resort kiosks).
6 years ago I was served a X version of the Zombie at The Berkley's Blue Bar and it was a riot. Its basically double of the spirits while keeping everything else the same. Ca-ra-zy boozy, a real liver challenge.
You've gotta use pot-still rum for the Jamaican. Appleton doesn't cut in my opinion and you'd be much better served using Hamilton's Pot Still Black, Smith & Cross, or Dr. Bird.
Random thing but what the difference between all the different kinds of rum I ask cuz I am only just starting to get in to cocktail lol so feel kinda dumb
As someone with a pretty bad nut allergy, is there any alternative to falernum, and for that matter, orgeat? I’ve made a sunflower seed “orgeat” before and it was alright but assumingely not the best alternative
2 questions: 1) Is cinnamon syrup something you buy or make? I've never seen it. 2) Why do you have 2 framed R's on your wall if your name is Anders Erickson, neither of which start with the letter R? Rum and red vermouth? LOL
I remember this was one of the first cocktails I bought into. Like, I had to buy a great deal of the ingredients. And I just hated it 😂 It put me off for making cocktails for a while. I think I'm gonna try this one and see if it's still awful 😀
For the life of me, I can`t find John D. Taylor`s velvet falernum in Canada, anywhere, and nobody ships to Quebec either. Is anyone in the same predicament ? if you have a way to have it delivered here, I`d love to know. Thank you.
Now how would you charge for this kind of drink in your bar? I don't know how much you pay for your mint but where I'm from it would be around 1-2$ cad. It's at least a 20$cad drink for where I'm from
made two of these for me and my wife but added 20ml of passionfruit syrup and a fresh passion fruit to each cup and my wife is currently wasted from one cup and i reckon if i do a second cup i'll be well on my way 😂
Finally got round to trying this one after making some cinnamon syrup. Made a bit of a mistake with the glassware as I only had a standard highball and it filled the glass alone after just a whip shake. Very tasty, very dangerous, very much a 'one and done' drink for me. I think I'm more of a mai tai guy overall, but I'll probably revisit the zombie at some point (albeit scaled down to a less intimidating volume)
I checked this drink is 3.5 standard servings of alcohol. If you had 2 you would literally be drinking 7 drinks. I'll pass on this, thank you. I get hangovers easily enough.
I challenged myself to make this without looking up the recipe. I accidentally dropped the grenadine, and doubled the falernum. I don't think it really mattered. There's enough going on, here, that we might be able to drop that ingredient.
If you want to cut to the chase, it's 2 parts rum and 1 part brains. Cheers!

Drinking, and... knowing things? Nice try, that's a recipe for Tyrion Lannister.
Great cocktail, but I was always taught, the cheapest liquids go in 1st incase of a mistake, not the alcohols 1st.
I think you missed the kitchen sink.
I love how you explain all the ingredients and give us the brand names, its very useful to us newbees
VERY dangerous cocktail. Spent an afternoon this summer drinking these in my backyard, how did that play out? just glad I was in my own yard lol
Now that’s what I call drinking responsibly! You’re own back yard was a great call 😂 I don’t know what an afternoon of drinking these would do to me!
@@AndersErickson not recommended lol

Nice! That Fee Brothers Falernum Syrup is great too. I’m glad you liked the Angostura costume. Been waiting all year to wear that thing! 😂
Has the homemade Falernum "for another time" video happened yet? Love the Tiki recipes! Bring on the summer!! To the swim-up bar!

I will forever love that Anderstura costume 💙 Happy Halloween! 🎃 👻
New to the cocktail game. Your channel is revolutionary, can't wait to kit out my bar and also try one of these tiki drinks 👌
Anders, thank you for posting the recipe for my favorite Zombie! My birthday was Halloween and it was the perfect present. Look forward to the day when we can return to Ward 8 and have one there....

OMG, Az has a perfect hat for this drink. You're literally hammered after a couple of these :)
Hi Anders, great video as always! But unfortunately, i can’t get 151 demerara rum in my country. Can i use different overproof rum instead? Thanks ❤️

Great Video! Ready to make these on the patio tomorrow. Quick question, can you use any type of absinthe?
Bro, you’re the best as always. I am afraid of this drink, once I had one too many haha 🤣
Maybe I should give it another go as an adult this time.
😂 Yeah definitely try it again knowing what you’re getting yourself into. Maybe stick to the 2 drink limit. Or just one and wait a while!

Is the 2 straws a thing for getting the drink on both sides of your tongue or something?
Dude!!! Where do I find an Angostura Bitters costume??!?! Hilarious!
Can i substitute the velvet falernum with a syrup like monin falernum syrup ?
Looks delicious! Maybe a silly question, but where do you get such full sprigs of mint? I've been making some drinks with fresh mint and all I can find are those little plastic packages of 'fresh' mint or a Charlie-Brown-Christmas-tree-looking mint plant at the grocery store. Do you grow your own?

1/8 oz of absinthe! It should be 1/8 teaspoon or six drops otherwise the drink will only taste like anis.
