  • FNF prez Eddie Muller responds to film noir fan questions fielded by the Foundation's Director of Communications Anne Hockens. In this episode, we discuss our NOIR CITY 21 festival, ”Monsieur Spade”, Edith Head and other sartorial subjects, John Garfield, “Fat City”, and more. We wind up with a discussion of which film noir doctor we would go to if ill. Sorry, folks, not cats in this episode.

    This week’s questions:
    1. What do you think of the new series “Monsieur Spade”?
-Kevin, Salt Lake City, UT & Michael, Post Falls, Idaho
    2. Have you ever considered airing the 1966 film, "Seconds" starring Rock Hudson? Jan
    3. Eddie, I recently stumbled on a video of you interviewing Coleen Gray, primarily about “Kansas City Confidential” and was stunned to see Eddie Muller with a goatee. Could you give us a brief history of the facial hair choices you’ve made in your life? I feel like you never see beards or goatees in noir. Maybe just the occasional mustache. Can you think of any examples of goatees or beards in films noir?
    -Greg in Richmond, VA
    4. Can you recommend books on men’s style in film noir movies? I have perception that Kimberly Truhler’s book “Film Noir Style” is mostly focused on women’s style but correct me if I’m wrong.
    -Iisakki
    5. Watching “Rope Of Sand” recently, I noticed costume designer Edith Head's name in the credits. Her name is familiar, but I will confess I don't know much about her. Please share whatever comes to mind when you hear her name.
Who are some of your sartorial favorites from the world of noir?
I read somewhere years ago that some actors in B films wore their own clothes. Any truth to this?
    -Joe from Suffolk County
    6. Who was the first female director of a film noir? The common answer to this question has been Ida Lupino with “The Hitchhiker” (1953). However, If film noir had existed internationally since about 1940, I have a suggestion: Bodil Ipsen, the Danish director. Or do you have another opinion?
    -Janne, Stockholm, Sweden
    7. John Garfield is arguably the foremost pioneer of method acting in Hollywood. What other method actors come to mind for you in the noir era, and what are your thoughts on their style versus Garfield's?
    -Neil
    8. I'm wondering if Anne could walk us through the process of compiling a monthly list of noir films for FNF's TV listings and what decisions go into which ones to include and which ones to leave out. Any specific criteria you're going with? Also, is there any possibility you might expand this service for other TV channels?
    -Brett, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
    9. I’m interested in your opinions on a boxing movie that I’ve always loved. What do both of you think of John Huston’s 1972 “Fat City”?
    -Craig from Timbuktu (Carlsbad)
    10. Suppose, just suppose, you found yourself in Noir Alley and feeling under the weather. Which of these doctors from noir or noir-adjacent movies would you choose?
Dr. Walter Coley (Houseley Stevenson) from “Dark Passage”
Sanada (Takashi Shimura) from “Drunken Angel”
Dr. Hunter (Sam Jaffe) from “Rope of Sand”
Poe (Strother Martin) from “Hard Times”?
For purposes of this exercise, assume they all accept your insurance.
    -Joe from Suffolk County NY

Eddie, I've been watching you blessedly defending Democracy & in this particular film noir you're explaining why you feel that it's part of your job! I think so too! After last night I was inundated with trolls trying desperately for me to SHUT UP about my love for Democracy! I sincerely wish I could afford to go on those noir city film festivals! Eddie please keep up the great work! I am a cinephile! But I'm particularly weak with Bogie & Bacall! What's happened to our nation in the past several years makes me wish I had duel citizenship with Canada! I swear I do! But that's that! After last night I swear I knew exactly what was going on! Eddie YOU ARE the GREATEST! I am on Quora too! I know that you are way too busy to be bothered with me but it would be a dream come true to have a chat with you! Btw, I swear I have Maltese Falcon on my DVR! As far as that goes I loved John Garfield who they say died of heart disease because of all of the stress from MaCarthyism! Please let Between Two Worlds be shown somehow again! They pulled it out of my DVR & they've pulled out so many others! But I have caught several but please Between 2 Worlds! John Garfield, Sidney Greenstreet, Faye Emerson & several others! I am going to lose my house otherwise I'd be on every single gathering you have! Cruises, wine, I don't drink anyway! Please I pray 🙏 that you are able to get in touch with me! My computer is shot! So all I have is this old iPhone X! God could we talk! I mean it & don't get me wrong it's not the fact that you are a good looking man either! I'm too old for men now! It's not in for women my age to have a man! All of my friends are widows! There counterparts are dating women who are in their 20's! Oh well back to the movie "Woman on Pier 13! Have a great one !

I read an Academy Awards book years ago that listed all the nominees and winners. They had a running "Head count" for Edith Head.

Oh yeah & she was a guest on I Love Lucy! With all of her awards on display on her desk! This was the special two week vacation for Ricky in Hollywood! They even had John Wayne on as a guest & Dorey Scharey! (Not sure of the spelling of his name! But yes I have a picture of them on an old 8 track tape! It's got Fred, Ethel, Ricky & Lucy all in a car in their way to Hollywood! All time great series of all time on tv! But that's just it, unless you can afford it now you can die before you'll ever see it again! That streaming BS! I tried to tell my friend that it was a clever way to rob a lot of people but only now she's agreeing with me because her internet service has doubled & if you don't want ads then you have to pay more & now there's about 100 of them and you have to pay someone big bucks unless you are tech savvy! I swear we're all in trouble! But that's just me who's going to listen to a poor woman who has never seen a stimulus check! Who's lived in a never mind! It's not going to change anything anymore because I think after the fiasco last night it's all over with! I was told by Russians to shut up! Yeah we're in a free country! Where a trillionaire is being held in the UK because of the conditions of our jails & prisons! What about the poor? Can U imagine that they've stopped visiting for people in jail! In the county where I live! They've been charged but don't have the money for bail! What's happened to innocent until proven guilty???

Finally recovering after 10 days of Noir and two stressful weekends of 49ers football. Noir City 21 Darkness Has No Borders was fantastic, probably my favorite program ever. So many great films I had never seen, and a chance to see some others on the big screen for the first time. But what made it especially wonderful was the chance to have my 22-year-old daughter Cate join me. This was her first time at the festival. Cate has grown up watching movies with me, and Film Noir with the strong female characters has always been a favorite. Having watched Noir Alley since it came on the air, it was a thrill for her to get a chance to meet Eddie, and no surprise he was very gracious to spend time talking with her. Thank you for a great time.

Agree about Fat City but what about Ned Glass (!) in All American Boy. Fantastic. Up there with Jay C Flippen in The Killing.

Great conversation and love the program of double features this year. Always fun getting exposed to new noir. Stray (Aimless) Bullet was so bleak and relentless; like a really bad toothache. Thanks for explaining what happened to Four Against the World; I was wondering. I love Imogen Sara-Smith. She is so sharp. Love her two books and her Criterion commentaries are amazing and without peer; and she teaches wonderful courses in Maine. Really excited about your upcoming collaboration. Thanks for all your hard work. (I would love to see an archive page on the Noir City website of all the previous program offerings, since you started in 2003. I’ve found the lists on the web and on Letterboxd, but it would be nice to have them on your site. I often rewatch an earlier program year for enjoyment and to refresh my memories.). Take care.

If I had to pick a noir doctor to visit, it would be Dr Leslie Ross (Virginia Grey) from Strangers in the Night.😍

Thanks for answering my question about who was the first woman who directed a film noir. What is more interesting about Bodil Ipsen than if she perhaps was the first first woman who directed a film noir, was that that such a large part of her filmography as a director was noir or noirish. Out of 10 films from 1942 to 1951 four or perhaps even five films was noir or noirish: Afsporet/Derailed (1942), Mordets melodi/Murder Melody (1944), Besaettelse/Possesion (1944) and Det sande ansigt/ The Face of Truth (1951), maybe also the alcoholism drama Cafe Paradis (Cafe Paradise) 1950. If you think that Afsporet is too slow to show on a festival, try Murder Melody or Possesion - perhaps her most interesting film. On March 23 I will watch Afporet/Derailed and Death is a Caress in the Swedish Cinematique/Cinemateket. Since I can't attend your festivals, this has to suffice as a fine double feature. I will also write to you about some other Danish noirs that you might show.

Respectfully never cared for Bogart . Definitely Raft was one of the best at style. I would love a book on mens fashion back from the classic noirs.
Love Nero wolf will have to check out those books thanks

Eddie or Anne--could you please spell that Norwegian noir that you mentioned at the 47 minute mark? Phonetically it was something like "Osporet" (translates as DERAILED), but I can't find anything on it online. Thank you!

Afsporet (Derailed) is a a Danish noir. But the Norwegian noir that was mentioned is Death is a Caress (1949).
