I adore Sam, but I've gotta agree with Tom. Mechs vs Minions has the highest production quality of any game ever. From the pre-painted heroes to the ludicrous amount of gloss-coated minions; the game is gorgeous and every component is the highest quality. The minions even have different poses, which is purely cosmetic, but a it's such a nice touch that Riot didn't have to do. The storage cases are incredible when the box is opened for the first time and the mission envelopes, the secret box and the layout of the instruction manual are all strokes of genius. Rising Sun doesn't even come close. It's not that Rising Sun has "bad" production quality, but it's not even CMON's best, let alone better than Mechs vs Minions. To me, it's just another generic world map board with some colour-coded minis and plastic shrines. It's still great, as CMON usually is, but I think Mechs vs Minions is on a different level.
And I disagree that MvsM was a flash in the pan because of production and price point. It’s a great game and I feel people forget about it and hate in it because it’s only available from Riot. This is an amazing game that would still be talked about more without those who hate on it for those reasons (not just Sam here) and if it were more visible.
I won't argue with anyone who thinks Mechs v Minions is the highest production quality game ever because its excellence is undeniable. But if anything could give it a run for its money, it's an obscure Fragor game called Spellbound. Most people haven't heard of this game, but go check out pics of it on BGG and see if it changes your mind.
The problem is, especially in Sam’s case, he is equating production value with mini qualities. All cmon games beat out mechs at that point. But production value covers every component. Metal counters, trays, nice dice, sealed mission envelopes with nice gloss printed missions, beautiful art on every tile, hidden tiles that you discover later, strong boxes, good cards, sand timer, painted characters, and washed figures. Yes they were all three basic sculpts but the thought that went into making every model fit in every slot. Grand Slam production. If you have a retail copy of Rising Sun (I have blinged out KS) you get cards, cardboard, a beautiful board that is linen finish, and a ton of great minis made with multi color plastic. So on minis alone RS and LoH will win. But from top to bottom detail and quality on each piece maters with the word production. Just my opinion.
