  • This is Virk I, a small desktop scara robot arm under developement. it’s made of wood (australian blackwood), acetal, pvc and standard components. Most parts where machined on a cnc mill/router/lathe (mainly Sherline's). There are still some issues and work pending.
    I hope to release the design as open hardware at some point, if there's enough interest and if I'm able to sell the eight units I'm building.

    What a cool idea to do it out of such pretty hardwood! Love it.

    Working on a similar project so I'm looking up videos to see how other people have done it. I love the wood frame, super sexy!

    That is a very pretty robot! I guess with a few tweaks (run cables under base) you could make a 3d printer with a donut shaped print area.

    What type of motors did u use?

    I've always wondered how strong resin impregnated wood (i.e. dry wood in a epoxy resin bath and vacuum impregnated) would be in applications like this as more attractive alternative to aluminium.

      I agree wood has a big potential as aluminum alternative on non critical applications. It has great properties and appeal. Structural stability can be a problem though, mainly on big parts.

    Looks like and expensive furniture. Makes me want to put one next to my hardwood dining table.

    Have you made the pieces of hardwood by hand? couse it looks so elegant.
    Congrats!

      Thanks!. Well, not exactly; the were made on a cnc mill and then hand finished.

    Hi, could you took some picture of the bearing structure, please!
    I want to design a same robot but i dont really know how to design the bearing for the joints.

    that is awesome and look forward to seeing some designs soon as would like to build it. What controller did you use?

    • @AutomaticArtisan

      Thank you! Kinematic control is done by an Arduino mega, and image processing by a standard computer. Nothing special.

    Great job!!!! Is it open source?

    • @AutomaticArtisan
      @AutomaticArtisan  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks!. My aim is to release the design as open source at some time, but this will not happen soon as my current focus is to finish the first units: close up design, writing gcode, machining last parts, etc. It's always harder than it looks.

      Fantastic men!! @@AutomaticArtisan any idea if u can share code?

    • @AutomaticArtisan
      @AutomaticArtisan  5 лет назад

      @@OtroPl4n Thanks!. Well, in this video I'm using plain grbl (no scara support) for just testing. Lately I've been working to adapt Marlin 1.0.2 (it has WORKING Morgan scara support) for this arm, and It's almost done. I hope to share that code soon, within one or two weeks.

      @automatic artisan It really looks good! I have done similar project for my Uni last year but ended up to write my own code in arduino because I can't find a open source code that fits my need. May I know did you have any progress in this? Possible to share your codes? Thanks!

      @@AutomaticArtisan I imagine the calculations to turn cartesian movement into this eggbeater style is quite a challenge!
