Of course we produce more than we eat; that's a good thing. He wants us to make better consumption choices based on our intuition and value judgements about the details of global supply chains, as if each of us could be an expert on the millions of inputs that yielded Marshall's shirt. Of course we can't be. So we pretend. We crow about palm oil because we heard some Dickensian story on NPR about that one issue, and we must outcompete the next progressive flaunting her social conscience.
