What I like in survival games is the feel of progression, like every tool that you build you feel the whole game changing, it's not like a fps where you just do the same stuff but in different places

Oh. I that is what survival is. I heard that buzzword before in gaming videos. This video is very helpful in explaining what that is. I am a Legend of Zelda fan. It is in the action adventure genre. Breath of the Wild is my favorite game in the series. I have watch plenty of RUclips videos about this game. This game has been described as having survival. I wondered about that. When I watch this video on survival, it finally click. Breath of the Wild is all over the place. It has a lot of features and aspects. One aspect is survival. I can pick out which parts fit in survival. That is the extensive item farming in the wilderness. Plants and mushrooms are gathered for food. Animals are hunted for food. Trees can be chopped down for wood. Wood is used to build a fire. That provides a spot to rest and pass time. Ore is mined for minerals. Minerals are valuble and so can be sold to venders for a lot of money. Breath of the Wild has some building. The player can buy a house in Hateno Town. They can fix up the yard and the interior. The player can also build Tarrey Town in the Akaska region. I don't know if this counts as survival, but there are harsh weather effects that the player has to deal with. Some places are too cold, with are snowy places. Some are too hot, like volcanos and deserts. This is overcome by eating special food or wearing special armor. Rain is the most notorious. It makes surfaces too slippery to climb on very well. Some rains are even more intense with thunderstorms. One should not have any metal weopons or shields. If they do, they are going to get struck with lightning. Dealing with harsh weather seems like what someone would do in the wilderness. I am not sure if it is part of a survival game genre though.
I do enjoy the survival aspect. That may be worth checking out. I dabbled with Minecraft a little bit, and I still have the game. Maybe I ought to get in more. The biggest thing with Breath of the Wild survival is food. I have a ton on fun with that. It is fun to gather and hunt for food in the wild. It is fun to cook the gathered ingredients into meals. There is no hunger meter or anything like that. It is just that combat is another aspect of the game. With combat there is health. In Zelda games, health is represented by hearts. In Breath of the Wild, the player is going to inevitably loose health due to fighting all the time. The main way of recovering that is to eat food. There are some places like hotels and shrines that heal the player. However that is way too inconvenient. Maybe health replaces hunger. That does help unify the survival and combat aspects. I just realized something. Breath of the Wild is different from other games I have played in that healing items are mandatory. They are not optional. Pokemon has easy healing in Pokemon Centers. I only buy and use healing items when fighting the Elite Four at the end of the game. World of Warcraft has easy health that is restored gradually. Some classes have access to a healing role. So they can use spells to heal themselves. I recently realised something. Even non-healer classes get some class ability to provide a bit of healing. Rogues get Recuperate. Warriors get Victory Rush. Mages can conjure thier own food for healing. Warlocks have Health Drain. Hunters have Mend Pet. I don't use healing items in World of Warcraft. Tradingional Zelda games had healing hearts obtained directly. They can be found in the environment and found in defeated enemies. Breath of the Wild has no easy healing like that. Health is mainly obtained by food. Food can be gathered in the environment without fighting. Then they can be cooked into meals. With extra good cooking skills, food can even have a variety of buffs. Some food has bonuses in offence or defense. Some food has resistences to harsh weather conditions. There is more. It is best to stock up on meals first. Then one can go do fighting. Breath of the Wild is very challenging but also very fun. Part of the challenge is mandatory healing items in the form of food. This is also a ton of fun. I become a lot more engaged with the item system more than other games. It is cool to have a whole game genre focused on this survival aspect. That can definitely be worth checking out. It is cool how genres can go together in game design.

If it doesn't have starvation, dehydration, environmental danger and permadeath, it isn't a survival game 🤷♂️ The genre has been dragged through the mud with ppl calling games like Valheim and Rust "Survival". Same thing is happening with "Roguelike". UnReal World(game shown at beginning) is a near perfect example of a survival game. Wanna know what a survival game is? Play that. The further it is away from games like that the further it is from a survival game. Survival used to be synonymous with "bushcraft". I'm thinking the genre just needs to adopt this name.

Fallout 4 and Skyrim both have an open world, crafting, and building. You may want to change building to building anywhere without restriction. Loved the video though.
A survival game is where the intrinsic "quest" is keeping your character alive while death is not a complete game over.
Many survival games have quests in them, those are extrensic - laid upon you by the game, but for the player, the main goal will be to stay alive. You don't play ARK because you want to beat the bosses, you stay alive and tame stuff. You don't hurry through Valheim because Yagluth is the ultimate evil that needs destroying, you build crap and do stuff. There are even more pure survival games like 7 Days to Die that do not have an extrinsic quest but are only about you doing whatever you want.
At the same time, death in a survival game is largely irrelevant (compared to most other games where you'd have to start over completely or load a save game).
This also funnels us toward why survival games are so much fun: We play them not because the devs tell us to, we play them because we set our own goals and at the end of the day there's nothing that can really keep us from said goals.

I think death is the only defining factor of the survival game. The game should be doing everything it can or at least something to be trying to kill you at all times which those games do. With building an open world crafting and such , those are just tools to combat death. with thirst and hunger or constant enemies(dinos, creepers, zombies) and even enviromental death(falling, freezing, drowning) those are just ways to deliver you to the core game mechanic DEATH which we are trying to SURVIVE.
Survival game has to have the bad guy that tries to kill you or makes your life harder

that said the most compelling argument you made is that character management defines survival, and I'm not as compelled by the crafting and building argument. to me, character management should be expanded to cover the other dangers, like needing shelter or weapons or escape.
and things like crafting and building should be in the list of available tools to meet the actual survival challenges. lots of games have crafting and buildings without being survival... the thing that makes a game that has these a survival game a danger to thwart with crafting and building
not a game, but the movie Dunkirk manages to be more a survival movie than a war movie. the main character management is avoiding weapons when you're wildly outgunned. the characters have a goal to escape, but challenge after challenge is put into their way, and i don't recall any of them being hunger or thirst.

I am a gamedev and I am currently working on a survival'ish type of game, in my eyes the thing that makes survival games is having the short term goal of the player to be survival. it doesn't really matter what the end goal is but that short term must eventually lead to the long term goal as well.

I'm not sure though, technically Breath of the Wild has some of these, Skyrim has the ability to create gear, cook food, I wouldn't say those are survival games.
If the game needs the goal to be survival then The Forest wouldn't be a survival game as the goal is getting your son back.
Yea you're also surviving in The Forest, but what about God of War, your goal isn't survival, but you're also actively trying not to die(surviving).

I think calling terraria a survival game is an improper use of the genre, because if you are just trying to survive, it is way too easy. Terraria’s goal is to become a god, not to survive. Same thing can be said about Minecraft, however it at least has hunger and invented some of the stuff to categorize survival games today
I think the essence of survival games are:
1. You are trapped/stranded somewhere
2. You're trying to not die while everything (including the environment itself) trying to kill you
If the environment isn't trying to kill you, it's a horror game instead of a survival game.
What I like about survival games is just exploring and finding new items.

What makes a survival game a survival game is a game where the two primary antagonistic forces is the environment and yourself.
Let me explain, the environment needs to be one of the two necessary antagonists by just being itself, the environment could antagonize you with scorching heat, or freezing cold. Countless predatory FAUNA (not just enemies, the “enemies” need to be a part of the environment, not just a bad guy to pass), maybe it’s disease, the environment must be a primary antagonist in some way or another.
Now the second primary antagonist, YOU, the player. The player character must have something innately wrong with itself that will kill itself if not managed, maybe that thing is hunger and thirst, maybe it’s wounds that if not treated properly can be fatal, maybe it’s energy that must be preserved, maybe it’s a disease that needs to be managed, in some way your character must kill itself if you do not manage it.
And onto the last defining element of survival games, the counter to you the antagonist must be connected to the environment. Food could be obtained from the fauna, energy could be gained by sleeping in a bed that you made from the environment’s resources, maybe you can make a cure to your infection from the plants of the environment, in some way or another the way you manage yourself must be tied directly to the environment.
I believe these are all the essential elements of a survival if you do not any one of these elements you do not have a survival game.
I'm here because I actually don't know what a survival game is. I play a lot of games, but never understood the moniker, and don't buy survival games because I don't know what that means. But... I have played a couple - no mans sky and a little minecraft. My take is that lots of games I play have crafting. NMS has base building, sure, but I don't reallly consider it essential. What, to me, seems to be the defining feature of survival games from this experience as someone who is admitting to not knowing what the word means, is a lack of, or de-emphasis of, any narrative goal. "Don't die, prosper".

I know some people might hate me for saying this, but could the Sims be a survival game? You have character management, being your emotions, and your needs, like hunger, energy, and bladder. It also has both crafting and building, it also has a big punishment for death, never being able to access that sim again. It does also have an open world as well.
I don't know, Semantics is kind of a goofy thing. I agree that this is generally what people talk about when they talk about a survival game. But a game might not have these things, or maybe some games there is debate whether or not its survival.
This goes with any genre-ization of things though really. There will always be grey areas and exceptions.

Nope, the dossiers are strictly collectables to expand the story. They have no effect on gameplay other than the xp boost for finding them. Thanks for watching!
On an Ark server I play on, it had died, four people remain. An admin was flying around killing everyone's dinos, me and a guy I was speaking with, got angry. We called out the admin, they banned us for no reason.
I just went on my ark and all my buildings and Dino’s were gone
