In the time of the Cholas there existed Buddhism, Shramanas ( Jains), Aseevakam (Ajivikas) along with Veerashaivam, Saivam (Shaivism), Vainavam ( Vaishnavism) etc. During the time of the Early Cholas, if one is to refer to Sangam literature, worship of Seyon (Muruga), Mayon ( Krishna), Kottravai, Elukannimar (Sapta Kanni or Saptamatrika) Muni ( Sivan) were worshipped. But the commoners also worshipped Ayyanars ( Sasthas) Karupars, Sudalai ( form of aghora) . I have given in brackets the Vedic gods so the reader understands the forms they can relate to. But the Cholas were not originally Sanathanis, they wanted to create one God throughout their Empire. That one god was Shivalingam, this is one of the reasons for getting at loggerheads with the Vaishnavites and Jains. Kundhavi ( Sister of Raja Raja I) was a Buddhist and she donated to the Budddhist Stupa in Nagapattinam. Cholas established Oduvars who sang from the Thevaram( a collection of Tamil hymns sung by Saiva saints) The payment for the Oduvars was more than what the temple priest received. Vedic religion made inroads more with the coming of Vengi Chalukyas bloodline such as Kulothunga Chola and then later with the arrival of the Vijayanagara Kingdom Tamilnadu Temples becomes Vedic. Till that time many a temple in Tamil region had only non-Brahmin priests as we have in Bhootadeiva worship in Tulunad and Coorg.
