Great report Eddie. Back in the 1970s, me and a few drunken pals shoved a giant Christmas tree that was waiting to be put up in the Bigg Market, down the stairs of the toilet and trapped several unfortunate patrons inside . . we never got caught so don't tell anyone.
Wow , the last time i was in those Gents toilets would have been 1989 , great idea turning it in to a bar , as for the womans bar never knew any thing about that , might be a bit tight to get in and out on a weekend , great video again Eddy
This is amazing, I totally had no idea these bars exsisted. Neither did my hubby who is from the north east. Thanks for showing them, we definitely want to visit. What a fab way to use the space!!
Great snippet of " Gin Life" in the Toon. Knew about the gents, never knew about the Ladies! Must visit both ( promise to self)..... bridge tavern for a booked early Sunday lunch, with missus & dog on Sunday . Have a great weekend Eddy.......we might need a brolly ! 😉👊
@@TynesideLife Hi Eddy 👋 I'm certain she'll have a great run on Sunday. My first GNR was in 1984 (16 yrs!) @ £3.50p. My last one was in 2013, when I paid £50 for an entry. At that price point, I called it a day. Still a great event for the Area and always showcases what we have up here. Might we see a wee video next week of the gnr Eddy? 🙏 Those Loo's circa 1980's.....after 10.30pm last orders in the big market, a quick tinkle stop, then straight into the rupali (opposite) for an Indians ! Happy days from the 80's ! 🍻😅👍
Champion. Cheers for the heads up. More of a malt whisky man myself but will certainly take the good lady wife to one or both of these when I'm next in Newcastle. Will have a bad back carrying around all my brownie points in my rucksack....! 😸
Excellent video have to admit didn't know about the 2nd one. Always remember the other underground toilet in Shakespeare St, handy when getting off the bus in Worswick St.
Eddy, its good to see they done something with it. Same goes for the one in South Shields, which if i remember was a victorian public toilet (now colemans seafood temple)
Great video Eddie. Yet again I seem to be following you round! I was in the town for a walk around and coffee on Sunday and i went down high bridge and i saw that Gin bar and wondered what it was haha! Now I know! Thanks mate
I remember the men’s toilet well. They must have used lots of air freshener 🙊. Amazing how they have converted it. Would love to go to the Gin Bar. Great vid as usual Eddie.
I used to rent an office space above the mma gym on highbridge for a recording studio and it didn’t have toilets. So we used to use them. I hadn’t realised they’d closed. Just shows how little I make it into the town centre these days
Years ago my late dad who was bus driver in Newcastle related to me that whilst driving down there skidded on iced cobbles and crashed into the roof of the toilets.Obviously worried he descended down into the toilets to find a guy stood at the urinals covered in dust and debris..
@@TynesideLife mmm, not sure myself. It means we have no public toilets in the town centre. Shop toilets only for customers and no where to go when pubs and bars are closed, it's causing a bit of a problem. Great docs by the way 🙂
The Gin Shop is probably better described as a Speak Easy I would say. Certainly there are the modern trend here in the US where many times they aren't advertised at all and only entered through secret doors in some cases. Makes me want to visit Newcastle again. I'm British and both parents and relatives are all Geordies to be clear 😃
These were always well known Gents and Ladies they were used by a lot of people the days the big market had it's market on which I think we're a tue Thurs and Saturdays. They were open in the 1990s and didn't close in the 70s. My mam worked in there for a long time for City Works/Newcastle council. Good video.

Love the ingenuity and creativity to repurpose these previously unused, but now charming spaces.
It makes the saying " Going on the Piss " come to life.
I told a few Geordie's here in Peterborough about your Channel Eddie.
Cheers John

Cheers Paul although I should clarify it’s not a womens bar. It’s a gin bar that used to be a woman’s toilet

Great message Mark. I may have misunderstood some of it but for clarification, it’s a bar as opposed to a shop
