I went through two bins of train set to pass onto his nephew and to donate to a local train club. It was a slow business but really only took an hour. I brought in a small bin of writings for him to go through at leisure while watching the news in the evening. After this there will be two more bins of writings/paper to sort, then will be okay for awhile until we move. I plan on selling almost everything when I make another move. It took us years to clear and sell his mother’s home. She was ill for many years. Sad illness clutter. We filled up three large dumpsters. I am mindful at my age not to leave such for others. It was very hard on us, we were in our seventies at the time. I have pretty much done my Swedish death cleaning. I have cleared out so many family estates, it was staggering.

After watching these videos, finally got the courage to dispose of a 37 year old large family portrait. Both my brothers and I have our own small copy and I didn’t want to leave this for my nephew to deal with some day. Made a bit of a ritual out of it, shed a few tears, but now feel free of the guilt.

i am late to this party. But I'm doing the challenge! I am finally able to get rid of vcr tapes of my wedding to my ex. I don't know why I held onto them. They were from 1991. Just opening the box brought sadness and a sense of failure. Yet my life is so much better now. And I don't even own a vcr! I needed this. Thank you!

This is exactly what we done with my best friends' mothers' sofa, she was always there, day in & day out. Even b4 she became terminally ill. We took it out in the back alley ro burn. We reminenced with memories as it burnt. Gave my bestie a sence of peace by getting rid of it. Shared memories of Granny.
It was very good for her soul.

It’s been ten years since my daughter died aged 18 from brain cancer. Yesterday I finally threw out her radiation face mask! I don’t even know why we brought it home from the hospital. But there you have it. Grief makes you hold on to the strangest things! It feels good to have it out of the house.

That's not unusual Cathie - I have seen parents often do similar things. We hold onto anything that is a connection to those we love ... even things that can cause us pain. In the end, though, it is good to remember the good and let the painful things go. I am sorry for your loss and hope that you can remember only the wonderful things about your daughter.
