I have been watching your channel since the beginning, easily my favorite channel on here. I think this has been my favorite video so far, because it is so relatable to my own journey. We thought our garden build would take a couple weekends and ended up taking many many months of body breaking work, money, and persistence. But it was worth every minute, and I was able to defy people’s doubts and have a beautiful harvest out of the very first year of living on our property :) Building and growing a homestead is truly humbling and at the same time miraculous. Thank you for inspiring me through it all ❤

I have found that planting potatoes, like you did, helps loosening the soil. their roots are fantastic at loosening the soil.
I love how you created your garden. I was hard work, but so worth it. :)

Before you start your next garden area smother the weeds with some black plastic from your construction site for a few months. Everything underneath dies. Especially if you did it over your hot summer and then planted it out in autumn.
Felt and wool carpet are ok for mulch layers underneath compost but I've found cardboard to be the best. Brown cardboard with minimal printing with any tape picked off. One layer, two if you need it.
I've seen a blackberry try to grow, then it hits the cardboard and then turn around and grow straight down for about 20cms!

I found carpet is quite a great tool to use in suffocating weeds. I usually put carpet down and then I guess if you don’t want to see it put a plastic thing over it or the felt, then the gravel over that. It does break up over time but it just saves weeds coming through for a solid 6 months minimum. It’s not pretty but it does the job.
You could even use Lino, but I think if you don’t have a drainage point it would pool water then no doubt weeds would make its way there too.

I had clay soil like yours, so I brought sand from outside and mixed it 50/50, that is, I balanced the soil texture ☯ , I added compost so that it was +- 33.3% of each (clay soil, sand, compost), I have mixed some ash and biochar in the first 15 cm and added organic matter collected from green herbs in the surroundings and the soil has improved a lot in texture and fertility, the sand has allowed me to cultivate the soil almost all year round regardless of the rain, At the moment I am testing the "Trench composting" technique directly in the middle of the bed, I hope for good results and to save labor, in the future I intend to introduce basalt powder into the cycle because it is very rich in minerals.

Hi, I am Anna Hudson. I am also a gardener. I live in an apt. complex but have flowers in front of my patio area and grow veges in pots and fabric containers. It is hard work as our soil is clay and rocky. I have had to dig trenches to put in bagged soil and apply mulch. I don't know where you are but we get broiling hot summers here, Northern Arkansas, US, so things grow again in September here also. I just have to try and keep them alive for the summer. Very challenging.
Thank you for your inspiring video. Sincerely, Ann H. and my cat, MaoMao Piper

Dear Eugenia, I really admire the strength of your vision and your endurance! However, you put an unsuountable phisical effort into this, and this video made me realize again! I showed your video to a friend that currently is a soil food web technician. She said, she would have made some holes into the dry / empty soil and fill compost in to nourish the soil from the ground up. She was shocked to see you put plastic foil😅 I am not an expert, but do you know the soil food web school? Maybe you would be able to make your own bio complete compost and safe some phisical effort for the future...in any case I wish you all the best for all your endeavours - and I admire your journey and your experiences you are living❤
