The story I was told about this tank was the Germans got this tank stuck in a shell hole, then the Australians went out and stole it as a war prize, loaded it onto a ship and sent it back to Australia!
Mephisto was abandoned by her crew in No Man's Land in April 1918, behind German lines, but too close to enemy positions to be salvaged. Three months later, the Allies had pushed forward so that the tank was now in Allied territory. It was recovered by British and Australian troops using two British tanks (or possibly Gun Carriers).
Imagine being confined inside this tank with 27 other crew members and get hit by a mortar, having pieces of metal, flesh and blood all over the place. It's horrifying
As of November 2018 the Mephisto will be located in the ANZAC Legacy Gallery of the Queensland Museum - Brisbane a permanent gallery comemorating those who served in WWI.
There are names engraved on the rear armor, just below the German cross symbol (1:16-1:30) If I ever get there, I'll have a close look. I've seen pictures of the names, but it would be fascinating to see this tank up close.
if this is the one and only "Mephisto"? I used to play on it as a kid at the Qld museum in Brisbane over 45 years ago. I was told it was brought back as a "war prize". The last time we played cowboys and indians in it, it was painted white with a few black swastikas and the name Mephisto scrawled on its nose. Nice to see it restored.
I saw this tank many times as a child went the family went on a Sunday arvo to the Queensland Museum, nice to see it's under cover now, it used to be out in the weather under a roof in the grounds of the Museum. I always wanted to get inside but the doors were all closed and I saw only what could be seen though some of the openings in the hull.
Jawa Landcrawler. Zee Germans took HG Wells’ “The Land Ironclads” a little too seriously. Whoever designed that clearly never laid eyes on No Man’s Land. Beautiful though. Thank you!
I remember peeing in that tank as a child. Was in a small shed at the back of the OLDE Brisbane museum. It was taken to the new museum until the heads in Canberra demanded it go to the Canberra war museum. They also stole the Rockhampton gun. This was the earliest breach loading gun which stood in the Rockhampton Botanical gardens. It came off a state warship built in the late 1800s.
+TheOccinator Actually no. Both the AWM and the Queensland Museum categorically state that it has been loaned to the AWM. Check out the fact sheet supplied on the QM website here: www.qm.qld.gov.au/~/media/Documents/Find%20out%20about/Histories%20of%20Queensland/Conflict/Mephisto/mephisto-fact-sheet.pdf
That's a clear factual error by them which sadly helps reinforce the often repeated furphy that Mephisto is legally the QM's when the reality is not the case. Mephisto has an official collection number at the AWM and they have never ceded legal title to the vehicle since it was collected originally by the Australian War Records Section (www.awm.gov.au/blog/2007/06/12/the-australian-war-records-section/) in 1918. Also I forgot to thank you for posting your video, you clearly have an interest and good working knowledge of the A7V armoured fighting vehicle.
It sat in front of the old Brisbane museum for over 50 years and was played in by most of the population of Brisbane kids for that half century. It was a Queensland army unit that retrieved it from France and bought it home for us kids to enjoy so let us call it a Queensland war trophy please.
This would be a great story! The museum gets hit by a lightning and then Mephisto comes to life and is undead. He has unlimited ammo and then he goes to take revenge and return home. Me: Mephisto es ist Zeit nach Hause zu kommen.
Scraped during WWII and sent in Hitler's direction. There is the running gear of "lottie' located in Latvia after serving with the Bogamon army. From memory these were built on CASE running gear.

Scrounging is an art form in the army.
And thank god they did so that we'd have one as a reference for all time
I think "Acquired" is the correct term you are looking for eh
@@scottleft3672Bragging rights and for trading with the rear units
Glad to see one of these still survived. The german government would have scrapped and melted that down already.
They actually asked Queensland for it back and we said fuck off but gave them the blueprints to make there own

That sounds awesome.
Yes it's the same one it got moved to AWM last year it's there of 2 or 3 years then goes back to QLD
swastikas? are you sure they werent iron crosses?
The swastika as the nazi aryan identity symbol was adopted in the 30's, so, no swastikas on wwI vehicles.
Richard they are bringing it back to the Queensland museum Brisbane in November 2018

Can you imagine 16 plus crew in this thing! That must have been living hell! Maybe what they ment by the red devil on the front!
Better than being out side of it and getting shot
BF1 brought me here 1st November 2016
Same!
Same

The Germans made history.

Just a small correction for you mate, Mephisto is not loaned from the Queensland Government - the AWM are the legal owners of the vehicle.

I stuck my long selfie stick inside and took photos

OMG They turned bf1 into a real thing 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Stfu do you actually want to make a relevant comment?
Boomer _shit dawg you got a fucking anime pic
Very intresting. The red figure, is that the devil running with a surfboard? Of course not but that's what it looks like. What is it?
It is the outline of a British rhomboid tank - www.ammsbrisbane.com/home.html?L0=6&L1=0&L2=2
LOL, it does look like a surfboard, doesn't it? Surf's up on the Western Front.
Where's the damage on it?
WOW, of course it had to be named after the devil to survive all this time.
The Germans tried to blow up there own tank after they got it stuck
Pareciam mais blindado do que tanques
The basic crew was, indeed, 18, but in practice the vehicle might carry 25 or 26 men. ruclips.net/video/WnECTsis0J4/видео.html
I say the German A7V is not the best tank.
dont the uk also have an A7V
Jacob King There's a replica in the tank museum at Bovington.
No, they do have a replica that was made for a movie in Bovington I think. Probably for Warhorse.
