i love these vids. I feel like each abandon property has a story, a history of the people that lived there, and reflects society's disregard for culture. AT one time, this was a very good place to live, US Steel was hiring, work was plentiful and homes were beautiful.

This is a prime example of why it is PARAMOUNT for a city, metropolitan area, or any other unit of government to DIVERSIFY its economy as much as possible.
In my opinion, one of the main missteps that some of the industrial cities made was becoming overreliant on one industry (i.e. steel production, auto manufacturing, coal mining, etc).
When deindustrialization occurred, tens of thousands of decent-wage, union manufacturing jobs were lost. These were the types of jobs that propelled many families into the solid middle class. Once these jobs were gone, this largely contributed to the erosion of the tax base of the municipality . Now, there are insufficient funds for maintenance and upkeep and structures are just abandoned and go into disrepair.
The bigger cities such as Baltimore, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Detroit weathered the storm better, but they were hit pretty hard also. They are showing a renaissance and at various stages. I think that Pittsburgh may be the furthest along. Detroit is definitely on the right track, but it is going to possibly take decades.
Some of the smaller cities like Youngstown OH, Gary IN, and Flint MI were almost totally decimated and they didn't fare as well as the bigger cities.
I happen to be a 30-year resident of Lansing MI, which is approximately 55 miles southwest of Flint MI. The two cities are vastly different.
    1. Lansing is the state capital.
    2. The Lansing area has Michigan State University.
    3. Four major insurance companies are headquartered in the Lansing area.
    4. There are two law schools (Michigan State Law School and Cooley Law School).
    5. An excellent community college in Lansing Community College.
I guess what I am trying to say is that Lansing had and still has a more DIVERSE local economy than Flint does.

Here's an idea: When a company closes up shop it must PAY the city a fair recompense. No excuses, no bargaining.
