It's called frottage, taking a pencil or charcoal rubbing

My late grandfather used this on cemetery gravestoneswhen conducting genealogy research before computers. Glad to know yall braved the storm safely. Fair winds and following seas.

The music page with the dark chalk . I can picture a drawing/doodling a silhouette of a girl standing in the shadows with branches hanging around her….ooh..that would be spooky. Think I’ll do that. Pam thank you for sharing. Prayers for safety. Hugs

Hi Pam, back in school we used to take leaves 🍁 and place them under paper and rub a crayon over it to get the leaf design…

Can’t wait to play with this idea :)
    Thank you !

I called these rubbings. I was with students on a field/nature trip and they did these rubbings on grave stones. Thanks for sharing this idea.❤️❤️❤️

As Kids we used to do that with wasco, which is a kind of oilwax crayon, very sturdy so you could push with force, on coins. Just to make pretend money to play with. 😂

Works great with a regular pencil or crayons. We did leaves in school...our homework was to go gather a few leaves for the project. Good times.

I thought of this with huge rubber stamps. I don't know if it will work. It will be interesting to see if you use different pencils.

I did this with my stabilo woody's a few weeks ago in my composition book journal. I remembered my grandma really liking this technique and trying different things so I tried it. It actually worked well with my stabilos, BUT I ran into the same problem you had with the smudging issue. I used black on the whole page and then realized that everyone who would flip through would get black all over their fingers 🤦‍♀ So I lightly brushed over the whole thing with as little clear gesso as I could muster. It did smear and mute the design a little, but overall you could still see the design and it added more layers of difference with some parts of the page more smudged then others. I got lucky, lol. Next time I will use colored pencils.

Also, I definitely told myself in my head when the black roses didn't work for you "see, I would have gotten so defeated and gave up on that page... but I'm going to watch to see how you make this into a masterpiece like you always seem to do". And sure enough, you just glued something right overtop of it 😂 Thanks for not allowing your inner critic to shame you into giving up. It helps all of us watching to work on our own inner critic too ❤

The point is in the joy
of the making. It’s what you prefer, everyone is different in their preferences of how they want their journals. I prefer eclectic journals ..a little of this…a little of that..this is why I follow Miss Pam . Cheers😊😊

I loved the rose page until you put the melon colour on! But I would have put a skeleton digital over the black but not cover the whole blackness…..just my opinion! This was fun today! ❤️📕🇨🇦
