i've been kneedeep in Skynyrd the past year (i'm 26) and I only just found this song(and album) my happiness is immeasurable at the moment. god I love skynyrd
I saw Ronnie sing in Portsmouth England in 1977 when Skynyrd toured. I can still remember that night in the Guildhall like it was yesterday. The only thing missing.........is my hair.
I put this video together. I was about fourteen or so years old. This is my dad’s old RUclips channel (I uploaded it to RUclips through his channel because I didn’t have my own yet, nor did I yet know how making one works). I tried to find as much of the “Craig Reed Footage” that I could find on the internet as possible because I felt that it fit best with the overall feel of the song itself. Used some footage from the Pepsi Tribute to fill in any gaps that I had for time. I recently saw this posted on Facebook by a 70’s music page. I was moved that a simple video that I made more than a decade ago moved so many people and reached that far on the internet. I’m also extremely surprised that it hasn’t been taken down for copyright purposes (hopefully I didn’t just jinx it)! “Fly on, proud bird, you’re free at last.”
I found this to be one of the most moving Skynyrd videos I've seen, besides the Van Zant home footage. The eery visuals of the flight really got me. Thank you for this. Great and underrated song as well! I gotta give @jameyjohnsonofficial credit for his cover, made me go digging for the original I had long forgotten about.
No one can ever replace an original. What a wonderful and beautiful song. God bless this music. Weren't a sadder day when that convair dropped into that forest.
What is great about this song is it is actually not a Skynyrd song. It was recorded after a Skynyrd session and Jeff Carlisi was in the studio. Ronnie asked Jeff to hang around. Jeff picked up Gary's dobro and they shared a bottle of Jack and wrote this song. I believe Kevin Elson did the studio part. Ronnie as always did not write down a word and they recorded it, never expecting it to be released. It was found and the band added instruments but this is the original, and the only thing I know of that Ronnie did without any of the Skynyrd members.
I saw them in 2018 the open band did this song the ladies sitting next to me did think I knew that song and the people who with her I ash them name on the song that they covered
Convair cv 240. Matches. Same type of plane in the beginning of this video that took Ronnie and others in 1977. Curious to know if it was this actual plane!!!
Donnie Vick It is the same plane, but I doubt the footage is from the day of the tragedy. I think if it were the footage wouldn’t have made it, and if it did it still would probably have seen some really bad damage.
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS HERE, IT IS PURE RONNIE VAN ZANT, THE VIDEO OF THEM GETTING ON THE PLANE GIVES ME CHILLS MAN, THEY SHOULD HAVE KEPT TAKING A TOUR BUS, I JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY WERE TALKED INTO FLYING ON A PLANE THAT WAS KNOWN TO HAVE PROBLEMS, AND THE PILOT HAD A DRINKING PROBLEM, HOW IN THE HELL DID THE PILOT NOT DO HIS PRE FLIGHT CHECKS, OF THE FUEL IT ONLY TAKES 5 MINUTES OF A STICK AND TO CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL, A STUPID OVERSITE KILLED ALL THESE PEOPLE, MAY ALL OF THE FREEBIRDS R.I.P., EXCEPT THE PILOT, COUSIN FIGEL
I’m close to Greenville. Driven many times to Houston. Baton Rouge is only about 10 hours. You right, they may still be alive. On The other hand, when God calls your name.......
"R.I.P. except the pilot"??? That's a really shitty thing to say, especially since there is no definite answer as to why plane ran out of fuel.A problem with the auto-rich setting on the engine needing repair seems to be the most widely accepted reason for the excessive fuel consumption, but there will never be a 100% correct answer as to why that plane burned through well over twice the amount of fuel needed to make the flight safely.
Steve Gains is in the vid and not Ed King, so it is latter in their career so most likely it is the same plane. Odd thing about it is that Gaines replaces King as 3rd guitarist, they had the same birthday...same day...same year...
Melkor Yes he did. It hadn’t even been two years yet since he joined the band, and they were starting to go in a whole new direction musically because of his contribution to their sound! Such awful timing for the crash to happen. 😔
Ronnie new dam well was how America treated folks with Medals that couldn't feed there kids From Old Hickory too Old Sparky & Old Glory is just another Old Story.Put my medals in the ground?
Yes SIR GROWING UP 7 MILES FROM RAIFORD STATE PRISON THE TOWN WAS STARK FLORIDA IN 1970 IT WERE THAY USED THE ELCTRIC CHAIR SO THAY WERE A HOUSE HOLD NAME GOD BLESS THEM ALL AND THERE FAMILIES AMEN 🙏🏻
Ronnie told Gene, who is in charge of merchandise tables, tallies didn’t add up. Ronnie told Gene he could take this flight or take a Greyhound back to Florida because he was fired. Cassie Gaines booked a greyhound to the next gig and Ronnie said whoever don’t go on his flights fired. When it’s your time to go with your time, let’s go.

Miss these good ole boys daily, grew up listening to them, makes you wonder what they could have .....................
I'd give my life if I could just save that plane, the band, and Southern Rock along with it. I surely would. God Bless 'em all.
My teenage daughters have this saved on their I phones! a classic Skynyrd standard will never die

Ronnie is so under appreciated when it comes to lead singers
it really doesn't get any better than this.its sad music will never be like this again.
Never say never..
Im a correctional officer just 5 miles south of this institutional facility. It is everything this song portrays.

Very close,he had Ronnie's spirit going on.

RIP Gary Rossington.
Sounds like me playing singing around the camp fire 🔥 best pickers I've ever heard them boys we're
Awesome video, thanks for putting it together!
classic skynyrd!!!
Just by looking at Ronnie, you would never think he could write such deep and amazing songs. Just shows that you truly cant judge a book by its cover.
What does that mean? I bet you live in Northern Virginia or Maryland.
What in the x#@* do you mean Chris J? You must be a yankee.
The guy was a song writing genius he was really talented
That's one thing you can say about Ronnie, he could write a song to fit any situation, where did he get the wisdom to do that?
Porn hi
I love this song nobody sings like Ronnie but im glad someone took up his legacy keep rockin skynard
me too!!!!
Johnny his little brother has kept the legacy going. He’s written some fantastic songs such as Red, White, and Blue and more.

Thanks! ♡♥♡ .
Love is love.
I love the end, too. That long pole is big bass fishing technique called 'Jiggerpoling'. It's a lost art.
I saw them in 2018 the open band did this song the ladies sitting next to me did think I knew that song and the people who with her I ash them name on the song that they covered
Can't back down to that place
2k views is a dam shame!
This is that doomed plane..
Convair cv 240. Matches. Same type of plane in the beginning of this video that took Ronnie and others in 1977. Curious to know if it was this actual plane!!!
I'm pretty sure it was footage on the same day as the crash, but not 100% sure...seems like I read that somewhere before.
Same plane, but this footage was from the early part of the tour.
Donnie Vick It is the same plane, but I doubt the footage is from the day of the tragedy. I think if it were the footage wouldn’t have made it, and if it did it still would probably have seen some really bad damage.
Keep it alive brothers. They want you to forget about it. Things were real and they will be again.

Jamey Johnson ain't fit to shine RVZ's boots. Y'all are fuckin high.
Jamey killed this song
Truth is a m.f...
My class song was free bird. I'm very unimpressed with all the people wanting money. Especially hank and kid. I no it's not them.
Anyone. Is that the same plane??? Creepy if it is. Disturbing.
William Hinson this is video of the same day of the crash
William Hinson wait... who crashed?
This footage is from the plane that crashed, it is not the same day they crashed.
Steve Gains is in the vid and not Ed King, so it is latter in their career so most likely it is the same plane. Odd thing about it is that Gaines replaces King as 3rd guitarist, they had the same birthday...same day...same year...

Michael Crossman Unfortunately, yes.
is this Ronnie singing?
Yes it is.
Ronnie and Jeff Carlisi of 38 Special playing guitar.
Jake Marc no it's fuckin Ghandi.
This is the demo version. The album version isn't anywhere near as good as this.
Is that the plane they crashed in ? Anyone?
Yes
Ronnie Van zant never wrote a bad song.
Is this that bad day
This is the truth about what happened on the plane. No they weren’t acting a fool like Artimus claimed.
Make sure it's full of fuel
Who runs out of fuel in an airplane
Jamie Johnson does it better.he has that really deep voice. I could listen to him sing all day long.
Yeah nope
