Excellent video... my dog is very overweight. Periodically on a diet thru RX food.. torn acl.. she is able to walk down the 2 steps to get out of house but when she comes in my son has to lift her. she is a lab mix. she is about 8 years old and has had many surgeries when she was young due to being born with rear legs that were not formed correctly. my poor baby is a mess.... she was a shelter dog...she doesn't move much during the day so I wouldn't have to crate her. I massage her every night and the video was very helpful. I was already doing the massages. I want to try the acupuncture and possibly get her a brace. I have her on supplements... thank you for your video. so informative......

That dog is awesome! I love how he is so relaxed and trusting of you. I have an 11 year old Giant Schnauzer. He trusts me just like that. I wish I had seen this video before I went the surgery rout on my other Giant's ACL. He ended up having surgery on both legs 1 year apart. The surgery went well, but it was certainly traumatic on all of us. That was almost 8 years ago. I lost that sweet boy in November 2013. Not a day goes by that I don't miss him.

Thank you for this video! We just had an operation - we are pretty big breed to keep her on preventive procedures, black russian terrier, but I got the idea from your video that it makes big sence to put brace on her anywise to keep her left knee functionable. 2.5month doctors were not sure why she is limping, I found accudently clinic and they diagnose in a 20 sec this ligament issue. My question will be how long we will need to keep her in brace to make sure she is ready to walk on herself. How to find that day when for sure we are ready to play toys - OR - we will never able to play ball with her? I know it is not so easy to answer, but just an idea for me to not loose the dog - she is only 13 month old and we already did something wrong if we 've got this conditions.

    Dear Dr. Jones,
Please tell me what you think. My 11.5 year old neutered, healthy Engl. Lab weights 80pd (recently adjusted his food amount). He is usually 73 pd but we all gained some over Christmas. He has no arthritis and great xrays. He was diagnosed with one ruptured Cruciate ligament (about 3 days ago). We cannot afford the surgery which the Vet suggested. Our vet also mentioned that the surgery option is complicated and not ideal due to his age. But she has no experience with braces actually working so she did not even entertain the thought. I saw your video the day he was diagnosed and ordered him the orthodog brace and have him on "bed rest" in a 6ftx4ft doggy play pen and pain meds. I will also order your supplements.
I start feeling like I am making a mistake and letting him down by not getting him surgery. I trust your judgment and I would like to hear if you think surgery route or brace, rest and supplements would be best for him at his age (11yr)and weight (80pd). Thank you for your help!

Thank you very much for sharing this information! I highly appreciate your videos and sharing. Question: In the previous video to this one (the first part), you suggested to initially keep the brace on for 8 weeks and to keep the dog with as minimal movement as possible, so that it could heal. However, in this video, you mentioned that the dog needs ROM to the effected extremity. Should you also give ROM during the first 8 weeks the brace is on (of course, need to temporarily remove the brace), OR should the ROM begin after 8 weeks?

However, since then, my dog who had a luxating patella (Stage 3) was treated with giving fermented fish stock and "Ligaplex II" (but the Ligaplex was stopped after 2 years), and I walked her everyday so that she would place more weight on the affected leg, and her luxating patella was healed WITHOUT surgery or ever having a brace. I also give her turmeric for inflammation, so I'm sure that helped, too.

My dog had knee surgery when he was 8 years old. It took 3 months to heal, being restricted, only on leash walks until he was OK again. First day of off leash in the backyard the other knee went. Another surgery, another 3 months until everything was healed. He's now almost 14 years old. He's doing well. He's still jumping in the car, on the couch, walking stairs. The recovery of the second surgery was better, different surgeon. It was hard for six month keeping him confined and quiet but it was worth it. I'm grateful for every day we have with him.

It is obvious that the dog isn't dead. Dead dogs, or any dead being actually, do not blink!
The dog in the video is his own dog (I think anyway). He uses him as a cadaver dog a lot in his videos, so the dog is just resting, and waiting till he is allowed back up. The dog obviously trusts him, and he knows that his owner wants him to stay there. He is simply a well trained, loyal, and very much alive, dog.

Hi Dr Jones- thank you for this information. I have a 13 year old tall, thin, 40lb foster dog with a history of cruciate repair / both stifles. He started limping, progressed to sometimes walking on three legs, and is now limping in his other leg and walking with a slightly lower back and wide stance. The rescue wants me to have him rest and wait to see if he gets better, but he has now had two “episodes” of whining/pacing/panting, and seems to me to be in pain…this started two weeks ago, and I added cbd after his last episode, which helped after about 45 minutes. I really think he needs to be seen, but the rescue thinks it is arthritis? He is on galliprant, Gabapentin, glucosamine…and I added cbd…does arthritis really do this in senior dogs?

My 4.5 yr old boxer mix was diagnosed with a choroid plexus brain tumor 3 weeks ago. He went thru SRS radiation treatments last week. On night 2 he started limping and 2 days ago was diagnosed with a CCL rupture grade 4. Because of the brain tumor he's not a candidate for surgery. Our guess is that all the anesthesia for 3 days made him so out of it he ruptured his knee. For 2 months prior to the brain tumor diagnosis he kept getting diagnosed with possible IVDD (which turned out not to be true, it's the tumor) so was on strict bedrest. Now after the diagnosis he's on Prednisone to control the tumor swelling. He's lost all his muscle mass from those 2 things combined and lost 9 pounds (75 pounds down to 66 pounds) and I'm guessing this had something to do with the injury. He also needs to use the bathroom and drink water numerous times a day due to the steroids. My primary vet said NOT to bed rest him because I need to build his muscles back up and we have started laser treatments and advised for me to increase food intake to keep his weight up. I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing, but bed rest is so hard because the constant need to drink and pee. I was thinking about going to a rehab place for hydrotherapy and maybe a leg brace. My question is...is bed rest right or wrong with all his losing of muscle mass from last time? Also, would a brace help? I read some things saying they are useless. Would the hydrotherapy help? I'm so overwhelmed right now with all the issues happening so fast but his prognosis is "several years" with medical intervention for the tumor since its most likely benign and slow growing. I'd happily go bankrupt to see my baby well as long as possible but I need to put the money where it helps most because money is not unlimited. He might need a brain shunt as some point to keep his CSF fluid controlled. I love him so much, and I don't want his last several years to include leg pain. Please please help me understand how to heal this best!

Hi and so sorry to hear this. In the short term you need to focus on decreasing knee swelling, and controlling the pain. I would suggest short term rest, getting a brace, and considering the hydrotherapy. The prednisone can weaken the ligaments making them more prone to injury. Laser is a good option. Consider oral and topical CBD/THC

Thank you so much for the reply and the info. I finally secured an appt today for possible brace/hydrotherapy but the soonest appt they had was the second week of November. I also found out this is the quickest I can get a cast made for fitting of his brace, since this is the only place in the whole state that does this. I will still look for a place to do the hydrotherapy sooner than that but everyone is so booked up. The last place told me they couldn't take him until January! We are continuing with the laser treatment from my primary vet. We did one today and we have 2 more left. Not sure what they will suggest next. I'd like to start the cosequin, fish oil, and tumeric and I also have started researching cbd oil. All except the cosequin is supposed to also help the tumor. I'm not sure how you feel about fish oil or tumeric. I've given fish oil/vit e/cosequin combo to my arthritis dog a few years back who has since passed from old age and I had great results. But for my current dog I'm not supposed to start any supplements until my next appt with the neurologist which is the first week of October. I'm getting antsy. I'd like to just start them. We will continue not letting him jump. Still trying to keep him from the couch and on his Ortho bed. We had bought him a Big Barker bed when we still thought he had IVDD, before the tumor diagnosis. Since that was the top rated Ortho bed I could find. Also supposed to not have chemicals in the foam. I'm hoping even if November is the soonest I can start hydrotherapy that it won't be too late to make a difference. Again, thank you for the reply. I had left a comment in another vets video for this injury after I left a comment here, (I won't name names) and was disappointed with the reply of "consult with your vets for the best option". Obviously I'm consulting with vets but I always feel that second opinion or different options are golden so thank you! I've watched your videos a lot in the past and I feel you're very knowledgeable. I appreciate your input!

Also I forgot to mention he's on Gabapentin for the pain, since he can't have an anti inflammatory because of the prednisone he's on.

Dr. Jones, I have a foster pup that has this in both knees and the rear left leg is atrophied. Would this benefit her? If not what would be the best course of action to help her?

    • @VeterinarySecrets

If due to bilateral ACL injury, then it may. Main thing is treating underlying arthritis if that is present.

@@VeterinarySecrets She is about 3 they think and the vet that diagnosed her with this didn't say she had arthritis. She was hugely neglected, we believe kept in too small spaces, possibly abused and possibly fought. We think this due to scars etc... She is just now putting some weight on.
Thank you so much for your time and help!

How is your dog so still?

    Hello,
I wish I would have read this site before going to the vet (more so to ask questions)
    Here is my situation -
Age 5.5 to 6 months super active puppy lab mix 50 pounds - everyone says there is some great dane in him. . We took X-rays and vet recommended surgery to repair a suspected partial tear of ACL. He came to the conclusion during manipulation tests where the dog has pain when moving specifically quote "sensitivity noted on manipulation of right stifle when cranial drawer performed" He did say something about the x-ray that points to ACL problem but I don't see it on the medical report
All other skelitol structures hips & joints are fine,
Although I am trying to rest him now ( nearly impossible)My dog runs fine and can scale over 4' objects etc.. run through thick brush etc.., He appears to be fine How do we really know there is a rupture? I feel since he is active and showing no signs of injury, could we proceed with non- surgical options? if anyone has questions, or advice about this situation, please comment ..
Oh, how it happened - we were in a dog park ( big mistake) and he was literally run over by two large dogs running at full speed. Jake ( my dog) did not move out of the way in time before the other dogs crushed his legs.. He was holding up his leg, walking on 3 legs & I carried him into the truck.. the next day he was chasing squirrels

If i remeber correctly we just walked him for a few weeks. Monitored it and it appears to have been a strain.

@@MichaelAnthony-rf7qi Thank you for the update. I don't think Sadie and I ever took it easy after she had her injury 2 years ago. She went back to "chasing squirrels" again within a couple days. She was great with no symptoms up until this summer when I noticed she didn't care to go on any big hikes anymore. Only a mile in and she'd turn back. There is some light footedness on the right side occasionally. We may try to give her a chance to actually take it easy for a month with no extended walks, hikes or straining activity and see where she is instead of - as you said, putting her thru all that. Here is a video of her walking at the park yesterday. I have a hard time thinking she needs some major surgery after seeing it, maybe not just yet.
