Dear Miss Laurie , I use the pear peels , too . The pectin in them thickens the butter nicely. I also use an old fashioned fruit press with the wooden plunger to mash and strain the pears when cooked down, further extracting the natural pectin that thickens the butter. It's a longer process but makes a true butter . Less sugar is required too . I do apple butter the same way . Love your podcasts and the Homestead with Mr. Brown too. God Bless you both for being such an inspiration to viewers .
So glad I found your recipe here. It brought back long past memories... when I was a young boy we had a great big seckel pear tree right next to our house. Every August our widowed neighbor down the road would ask me to help her collect some pears so she could make pear butter. I'd never let her pick up the fallen ones - I'd climb up into the tree with a bucket tied to the end of a rope - filling that bucket over and over again until she had a big sack full sitting in my wagon. Well, a day or two later Miss Helen would gift me six pints of pear butter - just about enough to last me till Thanksgiving! I was the only one in my family that liked pears so it was a treasure just for me :) Miss Helen would keep a few jars for herself and swap the others with the church ladies for whatever they had put by. With us having the only known tree in the area those jars of pear butter carried extra value :) Cheers
I have "never" done anything like this and I "did it" and I didn't even have all the ingredients. I am 73 yrs old and it was so much fun. Thank you so much for this recipe!
Dear sweet Folks ,thanks for the reciepe for pear butter, and the inspiration, I have a pear tree thats loaded with pears ,it was not supposed to get pears ,it wSsupposed to.be ornamental, but tb we Good Lord blessed me with pears ,im so glad he did ,and I'm so thankful for you folks and and all the beautiful food and reciepes you ess us with .Just peeled a bunch of pears, and I'm on my way to make pear butter. Thanks again ,love you and your hubby .blessings !!
Just came home from my mom’s home (frank martin), so many pots all over in the kitch cooking up a storm, pear butter, pear sauce, and more. Tasted her pear sauce, it tastes so much better than applesauce, so good! Thank u mumu for such a hot pear sauce, just pearrrrrfect! 😘 whipporwill, Thank you for showing such wonderful recipe and can’t wait to see more to come! 😊
We always use this on pork loins or fried pork chops. Anything pork. Grandma would have big white beans with pork chops with pear or apple butter and squash casserole. Yummy! Thank you for the blessings of your comforting videos. God bless you both. Peace in Christ.
Jar? I'm standing over mine on the stove now with my jars heating next to it...not sure much is going to make it in the jars! Here's a little tip I'll be happy to share: If you don't want to buy a whole bottle of apple juice for this quarter cup, you can purchase the tiny toddler size Juicy Juice apple juice boxes at the dollar store for $1. There's 4 - 4.23 ounce boxes in the pack, only 25¢ for just a hair over the ¼ cup required. I've got the rest saved back for recipes like candied yams and such...if I don't make a whole lot more pear butter! I've made a double batch today, but it's disappearing fast! Oh, and double batch I mean cooking two pots, not one big one...just in case someone new to canning and preserving is reading. Jellies, preserves and such don't always take well to doubling batches. Hope everyone's pear butter is a yummy treat. We just "happened" to have some Bluebell old fashioned vanilla ice cream too, so guess what I'm having tonight!
I have been following you and Mr brown for awhile now.. and my dad use to love putting my mothers pear butter on the homemade ice cream we use to make!! Yall remind me of my folks love yall and god bless 😊
We have 2 pear trees in our back yard. The past couple years the raccoons have gotten all the pears off the trees before I could harvest them. This year they robbed one tree completely but left the other one alone. A lot of the pears are misshapen but I picked them. Made my first batch of pear butter tonight and it’s DELICIOUS! I’m so proud! I was afraid bc the pears looked so boogered they wouldn’t taste good but THEY ARE GREAT! Lots of pear butter in our future! Thanks so much for sharing ur quick and delicious recipe!
I've done this too... I'm bad about getting distracted while something simmers, so I use my slow cooker more for processes like this than actually cooking meals. I also use it to slow cook my pie pumpkins in the fall.
I have 2 pear trees in the backyard. In the years that I get a bumper crop I do something similar. I make something similar to apple sauce but with pears. I don''t even peel them, I put as many pears as will fit in my big pot and start cooking them down with some lemon juice. I use my immersion blender to blend them up. I put them up in half pints and do the water bath canner for about 20 minutes. They taste just like fresh pears. Make a wonderful desert or snack for me and the grandkids.
Never had pear butter but Daddy used to warm up apple butter and put it on ice cream with some cool whip. I'll have to add this recipe to my list. Thanks for sharing Lori!
I'm so excited to try this. We live in Washington state across the river from Hood River Oregon. They are known for their fruit orchards we got a hefty supply that I can't wait to can this weekend. I'm so thankful for your videos, I've learned much from you. Thank you Miss Lori.
I made a batch of this today. And I was beginning to think between my husband myself and the grandbaby I was going to have nothing left to put in jars lol. We loved eating it just like it was kind of like applesauce it was so delicious. Thank you so much for sharing that recipe.
Love your post pix....your home is a home...approachable and loving w comfort. Brings back wonderful memories of my past of my elderly friends who had homes like yours...never taken pix so this is nice to see yours...at a time when I need something lovely to look at...to focus on good things.
This is Jimmy from Indiana. I just found your site. This fall I'm going to try to make pear and apple butter both. I'm 59, my wife is a little younger than me. We started canning again last year. Didn't get much done, hope to do more this year. Thanks for the great instructions. Have a blessed day!

Oh Miss Lori......that vanilla bean ice cream with pear butter sounds so totally delicious!!!! I can smell those sugar & spices on it! I? just bought some of the biggest, juiciest red pears at the grocery store.....i just washed them off good & ate them up over the course of several days. UM!!!!!! So good! I jove me some homemade buttermilk biscuits made up from scratch, & with that oear butter on it, it would be delicious !
I tried this recipe! A friend gave me a bunch of pears and I made this. Omg it's so good I just bought more pears to make more I bought apples I'm gonna can too. The only thing I'm changing is the cinnamon from 1 teaspoon to a half teaspoon, but it's delicious. I put it on buttered bread and fry like a grilled cheese 😋😋
We have two pear trees and some years they produce very well. I make pear cobbler but so many go to waste. This recipe is perfect for me. I can give the pear butter away to my family and friends. Thanks for the recipe from Oklahoma.

Yeah it would go great with pork, we German people love a little sweets with meat now and then,,,thanks for the great tip about the spoon thing to tell when it is ready to put in the jars,,,❣️❣️❣️i love your country kitchen there💕
Aloha! Thank you Miss Lori! I have some pears and didn't know what to do with them. I've just gotten good at apple butter, so this is a great recipe to try next. "Mahalo" for the inspiration. Happy New Year 2024!! 🤙
Oh yum 😋 with vanilla bean ❤ my favorite. I'll have to wait until tomorrow because I don't have any apple or lemon juice. Mine will be going in the freezer. Since I have to wait until tomorrow, I need to finish off the box of VB so I can pick up a new one at grocer 😏😊
Pears are ready here in south Georgia and I was blessed with a mess from a family from church. I'm going to start here and then work my way down the list as I have more...some pear butter, relish, canned pears and see if there's enough to try a little mincemeat!
My dad has a pear tree and gets lots of pears! They are canning pears, and we usually make pies out of them, but I wanted to make some pear butter this year. Glad I found this video! I think I’ll do it today!
Ms Lori I have to say this city girl is really glad she found you ... I am loving these videos you have done and have a few of your recipes that I definitely want to try very very soon. Thank you for sharing with us
Just got a sack full of pears from one of my girlfriends at church Sunday and have been tasked with returning this coming Sunday with pear butter. Can't wait to try this recipe - thank you! ~ Lisa
I made this today for the first time. I had 24 cups of pears so obviously I had to increase some things but mostly just doubled the recipe. It is so good!! I think I like it better than apple butter. I’m having some right now on my ice cream since you suggested it. Oh My Word! It’s amazing!!
We received two dozen royal pears as a Christmas gift. They are already getting soft so I will be making pear butter today. Thanks for showing me how easy it is. Merry Christmas to you and Mr. Brown.
Thank you, thank you so much for the video I am canning pears for the first time! Wish you lived close by I have more pairs that I know what to do with from two trees… So I am learning, your video was such a good help can’t wait to try these when they’re done! :-) Just a few more minutes I am going to do the same thing on the top of my screen first! Can’t wait to check out the rest of the recipes you have. Thank you again for sharing!
I'm going to try this with Stevie sweetener as I am diabetic. I use Stevie with my fig preserves and it works great with my figs. I hope it works with pears.
the past few years I've been making pear butter with the pears from my parents antique pear orchard on their property with the blended recipe of apple butter from a family friend and one from a "ball jar" book from 50 years ago, just the pears, sugar, nutmeg & lemon juice (I've been trying to reduce the sugar each time I make it) now I might substitute some brown sugar too thanks
Thank you ,mrs lori I placed an order from azure as my stop is by the tractor supply 15 minutes away fron my house . Ive got 20pounds of pears for $21.00 and 40 pounds of Apple crisp apples for $58.78 organic . Im looking forward to making pear butter and Apple butter & apple pie filling . Big hugs Josette We voted to October 22, 2024 1st time early voting . Oh my was so crowded !!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Good for you, Beverly...that's a LOT of pear butter! I have some on the stove now and just took a break to come see how much lemon juice. If you're on Facebook, Whippoorwhill Holler has a page and you can send Mrs. Lori a picture on there. Enjoy your sweet endeavors...looks like you'll have enough to share!
I love watching your video's, Lori!! You are such a wealth of information! And I love the fact that your hubby likes to participate in the videos along with you. (He has so much to contribute as well!) I was never exposed to canning and baking like many people seem to have been in the South, nor were many of my friends. The extent of Mom's baking when I was growing up came from a boxed cake mix, and that was it. (I'm a Jersey girl and I do live in the "garden state," so there are no shortage of farms around where I could get fresh produce in the summer time.) I've always felt like this kind of thing would be really intimidating, but you make me feel like I could do it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, useful tips, and interesting stories with us! I'm a fairly new subscribers, and I'm always looking to see what I can learn from you next (both old and new videos). Please keep up the great work!!
Yaye! I'm so glad you said you could use apples. I LOVE apple butter. Will be making some. Do you know which apples are the best for apple butter? Thanks 😊
Thank you for this!!! I had 12 cups diced pears that were super ready to process! They made 7 wide mouth pints of pear butter. Plus a bit left for using now. I may need to go get another box of pears to make more as i did not get any jam made until now. We love jam on everything so another batch will do us well. May use for apple butter too.
Hi Ms Lori. I love watching your videos so much. Please never stop teaching us the "how to,s" of some really fabulous foods. I'm making your pear butter today, but trying it in my crockpot. I figure I will let it slow cook all day😊 that will allow my home to fill with the amazing smell of slow cooking pears 🍐 😋 💛 I am all about making a home feel comforting. And for me cooking, canning, and preserving things in "the old ways" has really become a life long love. I can many pickles, salsa, jelly and jams for my community of friends and patrons alike. So thank you again for showing us that sustainability can be fun and smart too. Much ❤ from a Vermont friend.
Well, that was great timing. I wasn't sure if I wanted cinnamon in my pear butter or not, but yours looked so good I had to use some. I normally put cinnamon, allspice and ginger in my apple butter.
Down here in Florida, we have sand pears. They're like the Asian pears from the store. I've got so many. Im making pear butter, and just about everything else I can make as far as pears go. At the same time, I'm boiling peanuts.
I know this video is older! But I’ve never made pear butter and was looking up a recipe. I love pear and apple butter, but have never made it! I’m definitely making it just like you showed and keeping this as my go to recipe!
Im just starting to can and I love your canning videos everything have done so far has turned out great , I started this becouse someone gave us a bag of apples and I just could not see wasting them so thank you!
I just made this....oh, my goodness...SO good. My daughter just ate 4 oz ! We all agree...best ever!

Used your recipe yesterday.... made 30+ 4 Oz jars.... so amazing. Thank you.... I took pictures but no clue how to share them with you...
I love making pear butter
Never used lemon juice
Did use nutmeg
Yummy
Happy Mothers Day Miss Lori
I’m going to try this! Looks delicious!
Thank you sweetie, You can do It! with many fails, just like me, but dont give up! xoxoxoxox
Yaye! I'm so glad you said you could use apples. I LOVE apple butter. Will be making some. Do you know which apples are the best for apple butter? Thanks 😊
Looks so good. Will be looking for pears now. Lol. Thank you. Really am enjoying your channel
Thank you,xoxoxo
:) thank you I’m going to make this one! And jar it up. It’s Bartlett pear time here in Washington state... at least in my yard :D
I gave this a thumbs up simply because of the way you say toast. You are too adorable:)
Yummy! I can almost taste it right now! Can't wait to try and make it!! Thank you Mrs. Lori!! God bless you sweet girl!!!
You are so welcome!
Well, that was great timing. I wasn't sure if I wanted cinnamon in my pear butter or not, but yours looked so good I had to use some. I normally put cinnamon, allspice and ginger in my apple butter.
Pears are my favorite Kevin, a little cinnamon goes good with it, xoxoxo
Thanks for this video. I just gathered pears from my grandmothers pear tree. ❤️
Got some fresh pears and can’t wait to try!! Thank you!
I just made this and got exactly 5 jars, no extra. But what I did taste was very good. Thanks for the recipe!
Good!
Yum! I’m going to try this today! Thanks
Down here in Florida, we have sand pears. They're like the Asian pears from the store. I've got so many. Im making pear butter, and just about everything else I can make as far as pears go.
At the same time, I'm boiling peanuts.
Sounds wonderful
Thank you
I know this video is older! But I’ve never made pear butter and was looking up a recipe. I love pear and apple butter, but have never made it! I’m definitely making it just like you showed and keeping this as my go to recipe!
Hope you enjoy
