Recently I reacted to German kabarett and satire artist Volker Pispers' History Of USA and thought it was excellent. So I wanted to react to more of his work and in this one I react to his views on Capitalism and Politics, especially German politics.

Reiner Calmund is a former football executive. He maintained an image as a 'gentle giant'. The joke is about him being really fat at that time (even he stopped gaining weight at some point). He lost a lot of weight since then though.
Pegida (patriotic europeans against the islamisation of the west) is a far right wing movement that formed in 2014. They demonstrated mostly against syrian refugees and they hold their demonstrations on mondays, like the people did in 1989 in the DDR (GDR), as well as trying to reclaim their famous 'wir sind das Volk' (we are the people) slogan.

What you may be mistaking is that we have little to no "LEFT politics" in europe anymore even the most stereotypical "left-parties" are dumb enough to mistake "liberalism" for "political left" CDU was once supposed to be a "Party of the middle" their politics are now something easily considered "right-winged" in weimar republic! "Far right" doesn't necessarily mean "they want to kill and mass murder foreigners" its a political position of discrimination against certain groups in society... in that respect you could say most parties in germany are in some way "far right" after all they almost all unitarily "discriminate against the general middle and lower economic classes through their finacial and social politics"....

Sigmar Gabriel is a former german politician and he ist not skinny at all. Volkers sentence "Früher waren 'Dick und Doof' mal zwei" roughly translates to "In the past, Stan and Ollie were two different people" 'Dick und Doof' (Fat and stupid) was the german name for the iconic comedy duo and both adjectives seem to fit quite well for Mr. Gabriel. Also 'einschleimen' means something like 'boot licking' or 'brownnosing'.

I think I don't remember the answer correctly... yea, the walls of public toilets, the original social media.
and the german author and .. Kleinkünstler (also by now, film director and who knows what else he's up to) Mark Uwe Kling, takes this idea one step further in his books (Quality land). and makes the neo liberals (as a political party) register as an official church (like the catholic or protestant church in germany). in his books the neo liberals claim it was just to save taxes.. but it's really just being honest.

The East of Germany (GDR/DDR) could not keep up with the economic growth supported by the USA, for they were also partially exploited by the UDSSR. They tried to better their economy with production for e.g. IKEA. The currency and the production costs were lower than in West Germany. Therefore students and people with lower wages from the West could afford products from the GDR/DDR easier. It was like a transfer of wealth that continued even after the Fall of the Berlin Wall by western Companies and Investors (from GER West and International) buying up Eastern German companies, exploiting them and letting them die.
This problem is to be seen from multiple perspectives, for it is a very complex situation, but I think that example can give an easy to understand impression.

"Einschleimen" means "kissing up" or "sucking up". The "cesspool" joke is a wordplay on Günther Jauch, a famous TV host, who at that time hosted a talk show on Das Erste, with "Jauch" being similar to "Jauche" which means as much as sewage. And "the first programming" is the channel Das Erste, which literally just means "the first" since it was the first federal TV broadcasting company. Similar to the BBC it's a publicly owned broadcaster and not in private hands.
The "fat and stupid" joke is a play on the German name for Laurel and Hardy, an American-British comedy duo out of the silent film era that still have a relatively large fan base in Germany. The German title of the duo was "Dick und Doof" which means "fat and stupid". Generally speaking, these subtitles are a bit subpar. It's often enough just autogenerated based on the exact meaning of a word, not the contextual meaning within a phrase or sentence. And sometimes words just weren't translated at all, like "einschleimen" or later "Walt" which means "forrest" and wasn't even written correctly in German since we write it we a "d" at the end, not a "t".
Furthermore, Sigmar Gabriel at the time was the federal chair of the SPD, the German equivalent to the Labour Party in the UK. In that position, Gabriel also served as Vice Chancellor under Merkel from 2013 till 2018. For most of that time, and I think also while this was recorded, he was also the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs. Pegida was a far-right protest movement in Dresden that kinda fuctioned as a base for the rise of the AfD at the time. The AfD being Germany's far-right political party.
13:35 "Bouquet" is another sign that this was not translated by a human. While the German word "Strauß" can be a short form for "Blumenstrauß" which means "bouquet", in this case this is not what it means. Strauß was the last name of right-wing politician Franz-Josef Strauß, to this day revereed by the conservative CSU in Bavaria and made infamous through the Spiegel-Affaire in 1962, when he used his position as Federal Defence Minister to order a raid on the weekly news magazine Der Spiegel after a critical article about the battle readiness of the Bundeswehr (German military) had been published there. This was a major attack on the freedom of the press and Strauß had to leave but he did return into government. He not only did become Federal Finance Minister four years later, he was the Minister President (basically governor) of Bavaria from 1978 to 1988. In that position he was essential in getting the Western German federal government to agree to give the Eastern German government a major loan in the sum of billions back in 1982/83.
17:18 "Everyone and everyone" is another really bad translation. Better would be "anyone and everyone".

Not that the West was guilty of direct exploitation of "prisoners"; the Soviets were the prison admin and guards and allowed these products to be sold to the West to keep their prison financed. But the brands were ubiquitous in post WWII Western Europe, and especially in Germany. Pispers' view has a great deal to recommend it.

Since basically all companies and production facilities were owned by the state they did have many possibilities to sell the work of east Germans to provide the government with money. 1 Euro Job = unemployed are force into such jobs by the Agency for Labour, to work there, often full time, and only get ~1€ per hour (that's on top of the unemployment benefits, though). Main problems:
    1. They are forced to do that and the jobs most of the time are either stupid or they should just be normally paid jobs.
    2. Corrupt companies profit from these 1€ Jobs by not only getting the payment for the worker from the state, but also a bonus on top. So instead of normally paying a real wage, they MAKE money by getting a work slave for free. What is pretty insane, but we can't get rid of that insanity, since the majority of germans still vote for the right wing parties which are of course more than fine with that.

(but now he had surgery he is slim now^^) Do you have a discord? sometimes it would be good if a german could explain some of that. the subtitels are not always good^^ sometimes only reading them I do not get the points^^ I think you only get half of the buttons he is pressing.

I am from eastern Germay. And the wall did what Volker said. Even today it is the region with the biggest low payment sector in germany. And you get less money as for the same job in western germany. The problem is, that the right partys use it for there propaganda.

I was wondering if you have similar voices in GB. I do watch a few panel shows but Ive not seen the BBC have dedicated programmes for satire and individual artists as they have in Germany on the "dritter Kanal". Pispers, Georg Schramm and Urban Priol have, for decades, defined political satire in Germany. The only GB name that came to mind was Tom Walker/Jonathan Pie, and I wonder if you can name a few more?

I have to give you one thing, you really picked the good cabaret artists. I could still recommend Michael Mittermeier to you, but I think the automatic translator will drop out because he comes from Bavaria.
"Die Anstalt" is actually no longer a cabaret, more of a satirical reality, precisely because Claus von Wagner and Max Utthoff provide really well-founded information. That could easily be described as school lessons of the very best kind.

Capitalism is factually the best system of economics ever created, it's everything else around it that makes people think otherwise.
Capitalism is a fun notion, but let's not forget that Capitalism is pure and free from ideology, the people around it, aren't.
Capitalism is the best philosophical invention ever, however I don't think humans are the best suited to live by it, I mean it is truly a beautiful idea. The exchange of goods and services for money, and as we all know money is time. Now some people sell their time for money real cheap, we call them the working class, then we have the people who sell their time for a lot, we call them the middle class, then we have the people who you can't afford to buy their time, the upper class, and then we have those people who you can't pay others to know how much you would need to pay for their time in the first place, we call them entrepreneurs. And then we have those who waste their time away doing nothing, we call them the welfare recipients.
The biggest problem with Capitalism is that it has brought along ideologies that are harmful, such as materialism.
Materialism is really bad. And as a non-materialistic person myself, I mean most people would understand how I keep all them 0s at the end of my bank balance. Because I don't buy stuff.
I have a bed, I have a table I have a computer. I have an old drawer that was gifted to me, 20 years ago, I don't have a TV, I don't have a sofa, I don't need them, I only buy stuff I need like food. My current phone is 7-8 years old, my clothes are ragged, because I only buy new clothes once every 5-6 years... The problem isn't capitalism it's the people.
Everyone could make bank with Capitalism, not everyone will, life is unfair after all. I've worked hard all my life and I'm still not rich, by any means, but I'm not poor either.
People fail to recognize that to get stupid rich you need to use your money wisely...
Everything that can occur in economics, can be explained in economics with ease.
Inflation. Government spending greater than taxation.
Poverty. Cost of living greater than income.
    Taxation. Government stealing your money.
Welfare. The greatest lie ever told to people. I could afford to feed 3 adults for a month with the money I was taxed for as a low income earner. Now the government can feed 0.1 adults for the same amount of money. Because...
Government. The most useless institution ever made, can't handle money efficiently, is a wastrel, has a lot of plans, steals your money, because they can't make their own, except they make the money, thus deflating the value of the money due to an inflation of currency.
Still capitalism is greater than socialism, always. I prefer having the chance to get rich over everyone gets poor except the ruling class.

The last remark is not about people getting rich because of luck at the lottery. It's about capitalism giving us the beleive that ANYONE can become rich. But not EVERYone. If everyone was rich, there would be no poor workers tro be taken advantage of, so the rich would become poor.

    very intelligent man

There is something with German satire that doesn't pass through translation - irony. When Volker states/repeats (from that Sarazin populist guy) that people from the south are lazy getting born with a hammock it's an ironic parody to that people that indeed might think like that. Actually, have heard such opinion from people in Italy or Spain ignoring that their southern regions are one average there much less developed, with bad job perspectives and low salaries ...

There sadly so many things are lost in translation, the subtitles aren't very "precise" but i think you still get the bigger picture. Also i think this is a bit too "high" for you, not because you are stupid or something like that but because the references he makes can't be understood without knowing persons, institutions, how the system works/worked and so on and because of that you just can't get the cynical nature, the satire, etc of many things or the humor or allegories and so on. But still, kudos for trying. With Volker you have one of the best we had in germany, ther is only one other who i would say also ranks up high there or maybe is even better, and that is Georg Schramm in his role as prussian pensioner (called Lothar Dombrovski). You defintly should watch him. He is so bitter und so truthfull that the laugh dies in your throat. When you see his programms you will notice that most of the times the people don't laugh but just listen in aww and silence, to hard hit to laugh. Where Volker here and there gts some laughs in (and he wants to) Georg (in that role) almost has none, not because it is "bad" but because it is so on the point that you just can't laugh anymore. I know this doesn't sound like "fun" and in a way it isn't, it a a lesson it is the truth and it is shockingly honest, and makes you think of yourself. Sadly Georg, like Volker, also has quit already some years ago. Those two are the best that germany had to offer for the last 30 years and nothing comes close to them in modern times.
