yes I saw her in July of 1986.. it was amazing as her voice was so strong.. this was just before the bypass surgery ... and her version of God Bless the Child stood out , as it was way better than the studio and also the jam session at the end was with everyone Sonny Rollins, Toots Thielmans .. it was a night I will never forget
actually this song was played to death in the 70's ...it's refreshing to hear alternate treatments of the song such as Sarah, Ella and even Nina Simone.....I think they had a clip of Lyndsay Waggoner singing it on The Bionic Woman from 1977 too....she did a good job too!

I wasn't sure Ella would be able to create as much heart-ache as Simone's crazy-ass bi-polar version... But as always, Ella, a master, is musical, jazzy, moving, sweet and most of all very, very CLEVER. Thank you for sharing the magic with us. You do very important work.
