Rugby league banned the shoulder charge and hip drop tackle. "The game is soft!" "It's been this way forever" "don't play if you dont want to get hurt" - we heard all the same things. But the game moved on, the quality of play actually improves and players have less injuries. It also becomes easy to police the swivel technique stands out like a sore thumb.

It is actually bad tackling technique in most situations. 1 in 4 times the defender loses their grip and the runner busts the tackle. Being unweighted reduces ground friction stopping power to zero and places everything on the defenders grip. Very risky.
Form tackling is actually more effective.

Worse, having to think about how you're not going to tackle while you're trying to make a tackle is going to be nightmare. The problem is not the tackle. The problem is certain ball carriers carrying the ball in situations where they probably shouldn't.

I'm sure you will see more support for this rule by the players when they see how it's implemented. I love Tackle football, but just like the horse collar tackle or hitting a defenseless receiver banning the hip drop tackle (first time I heard it called this I thought they said "Hip Hop" Tackle) as you described it here it's justified. I never liked the idea that you only beat another team because a tackle took a star player on the other side off the field. How on earth wil the refs, in a split second, be able to determine whether it's a lawful or unlawful tackle, when they already can't even spot holdings? And, by the way, how are DBs supposed to bring a guy down, now ??

The National Rugby League (NRL) banned the hip drop tackle in Australia a few years ago after a spate of nasty injuries. Players are taking time to adjust technique but it’s an ugly tackle and nobody wants to see anyone have a serious injury.

For the Chiefs, they lost the trade. Unfortunately, that was the best thing they could get out of a Sneed trade anyway. We did right by getting Sneed to a team that would pay him and ensure he's good for the remaining years of his football career. That's good enough for me.

  • @anthonychilds8193

We got very little for Sneed because of HIS contract/salary demands, so he had the leverage and because Colts signed him to an extension AND the Chiefs are confident they can draft and develop that position very well (+ McDuffie is up for a similar bag I think next year). Thanks to Nick Wright (and you) for really getting the micro details. There is no way we could've kept Sneed and effectively addressed ANY of our depth needs or incoming draftees. Just couldn't happen even in the increased cap year.

LOL..My son was a 5'7 220 lb running back in high school. All thighs and chest. Hip sink was the only way he could be tackled without injuring yourself. So by these rules, he stays healthy and defenders get trucked. Makes sense.

Well, at least the tackle rule has the additional requirement of also coming down on their feet/knees. They can still drop tackle if they avoid where they fall.

  • @user-hs5vb6kc9o
    @user-hs5vb6kc9o 2 месяца назад

It's true most of the rule changes hamper defense, but when the work around players find is even worse technique that is as, if not more, dangerous than what was banned then of course they keep taking stuff out of the game. Remember that for years leading with your head was not only "good tackling", but the preferred way. Go to old highlights and listen to guys being praised for "putting their head on the ball".
Hip drop tackles are not bad per see, but if you are swinging your weight below the guy you're tackling it means that 19 out 20 times your have a good enough grab on them that you could have done something else to take them down. Because people get fixed on the poor 170lb CB trying to take down a 240lb TE down field, but a lot of hip drop tackles, as the one against Mahomes, are a 220lb linebacker or 250lb defensive edge doing it in in a situation with much more "safe" options but do it because it's "easy". Remember, horse collar tackling was also the "easy" way to take a guy down from behind, just reach out and jank at them from behind. Doesn't mean it was a good solution.

The Sneed trade is sad. I will miss him and his awesome playing but understand that team and Sneed did what was right for each. The changes on challenges, foul enforcement and replay overruling on field judges are fine. Kick off change not sure but may make the game more exciting and if done for all teams could be fun to watch. LOL. The change on tackling is so subjective, it may cause many headaches literally and figuretatively.

About the swivel hip-drop tackle rule change:
I just wish that they had included the word "intentional" (... *intentional* swivel and dropping...). As the montage of clips showed, there are many times when a swivel is inadvertently caused by the direction of attack. All teams are trying to obstruct the tackle and all ballcarriers are trying to avoid it, thereby altering the ballcarrier's direction which then causes the inertia and momentum of the tackler to swivel along the axis of the ballcarrier. #physics
A player should not be penalized because of the nature of the game. I get that this was banned in #Rugby, but there is a HUGE difference in tackling because of the rule that, "A player must not intentionally prevent an opponent from tackling or attempting to tackle the ball-carrier." In the NFL, that is absolutely part of an offence's strategy which then creates obstructed attack/tackle lanes from defender to ballcarrier. If those lanes were unobstructed, then sure hip-drop is always intentional. Because they are, the hip-drop is usually inadvertent.

I mean i like the change for getting rid of the hip drop tackle bc its only a flag if you land on the legs so just dont land on them. Everytime i saw this tackle being down i was afraid of an injury and pat mcafee claim of flopping shouldn't really be that big if all you need to do is review it and see if the player landed or not on the legs. I will say though if players do get caught flopping then that should be a penalty in itself to reduced players want to flop.

As far as the Sneed trade goes, both things can be true... The team definitely needed to move him to clear up much needed cap space, but they also got taken to the woodshed on the trade!
As far as the rules changes go, basically every rule implemented since like '05 has been "for player safety," but have only served to make the league soft and it's just getting out of control! It's a contact sport, there are going to be injuries. We were all well aware of that from the start of pee-wee football and we all signed on knowing the risks involved! The league wanting teams to "score more" says everything we need to know about it, all of the rules they've changed were to help offenses and penalize defenses (other than taking away chop blocks, but that's literally one rule to like fifteen that help offenses) if it were truly about player safety it would be more even across the board! They heard someone utter the phrase "defense wins championships," and replied "we'll just see about THAT!" 🤦🏻‍♂️🙄 Not a fan

  • @phonzierelli448

The hip drop tackle can (and I think must) be enforced by the replay booth. It can be called
by the ref but it must be reviewed. While you're at it, do something about the ridiculous and
gratuitous number of holding calls. There probably isn't much you can do about the quality
of a holding call if it isn't obvious but the total number could be reduced. Overall, I think
the replay booth should be much more involved in everything except administrative
fouls; off sides, encroachment, clock, conduct, formation, motion etc... I mean, even the sidelines,
goal lines, and pylons get a booth review. Or, get the refs some Dick Tracy TV glasses so they
can correct their own calls? - Sneed had great content of character so you hate to lose a good
man but he had to be paid. Bless that man.

If we end up getting one more quality player (and get a couple of guys re-signed) this off season then I think we'll have improved the squad significantly overall. Re tackling, like a lot of things in life, you can't make rules to cover everything so maybe we need a balance using some common sense and judgement calls (with good refs!).

  • @djage493

The hip drop tackle is dangerous. The NRL had this issues recently and they brought in a penalty for hip drop tackles. Player safety should be key with these sort of rules ar looked at. While there is ways for offensive players to be able to milk it it is not going to cause too much damage to the product just less damage to players leg/ankles.
