10minworkshop put me onto the Hultafors' Talmeter tape measure and it's so good, espeically with the internal measurement bit and it's metric as well! Definitely worth checking out!
was going to comment on this exact tape also, been very pleased with this device myself. a touch more expensive than standard tapes, but worth it in my opinion. Does not have all the features Keith is after, like measurements on both sides, but has most. would highly recommend to anyone who asks my opinion.
The two problems with the Talmeter is that you can’t put it in your pocket due to the two sharp points, and, I’m constantly getting the opening point stuck under my thumbnail (sometimes quite painfully) when I open it. As a result I only tend to use it these days for internal measurements, at which it excels.
My go to tape measure currently £19 at Amazon
I won this measure about 3-4 years ago in a competition and have used it since love it
I have four Advent Vice Versa 5m Metric Tape Measures (ATM4-5025VV) - one at either side of my mitresaw and one at either end of my tablesaw, along with yellow papermate mechanical pencils. Basically whereever I reach for them I put these combos.
I use Hultafors Talmeter tape measures for when I'm doing fine or precise things as the points allow transferring dimensions.
Outside the workshop I use FastCap PMMR-TRUE32 Tape Measures as you can write in pencil on the face and the tape itself.
Being lefthanded means I value double metric scales.
Hultafors Talmeter. Absolute game changer.
I recommend the Stanley panoramic which has a great vintage vibe, and though it doesn't lock it doesn't have a strong retraction so it stays where you put it.
Very pocketable i use mine more as a fidget toy than an actual tape
I'm glad you showed the dust hood adapter, as I've just bought a new lathe that I want to fit dust collection to.
I've been using that rutlands vac for over a year as my main dust collection, paired with a cyclone drum and it works v well. v happy with it. At the occasional offer price I'd even consider one for the house when the need arises.
BMI 3m metric Tape Measure, is the best ive found its edges lay flat on the workpiece. great for accurate marking out
I quite like the stanley fatmax 2m keyring tape. Has a lock, only metric and fits nicely in the pocket especially after removing the keyring. I've got about 8 dotted about and they only cost a few quid
The sander seems like a great budget option. Having the variable power is a nice touch, normally reserved for more higher end sanders - and essential for sanding (well, if you want to get the best possible finish!). Thanks for sharing.
happy Christmas to you and your family Keith and thank you for all your content this year, it has been a real joy watching your projects. All my best for the new year
As for precision (and if I did the math right): A type I tape measure will be out of spec if it's 10 Celsius hotter/colder than the reference temp. +- 20 Celsius for type II. So if you're working outdoors, temperature will probably be the greater factor for accuracy.
Thanks Keith, All the best for the Holidays and the New Year. Take care & stay safe.
You too
Merry Christmas to you all ⛄
Love the tape measure deep dive Keith. Thank you
Merry (happy) Christmas, Keith, to you and yours!
My 5m & 8m tapes are DeWalt tapes but the one that I use the most is a Stanley Fat Max 2m on a (removable) key chain. It covers the majority of my jobs and you'd hardly know that it's in your pocket. Merry Christmas and I hope that you have a very happy and prosperous new year. Cheers.
Merry Christmas and Happy New year.
Happy holidays!
Hello Keith, as I'm sure you're aware, it's not good practice to allow the tape to snap back into the housing, as it may damage the clip and thus affect accuracy. So, on the subject of desirable features for a tape measure, a rubber buffer in the housing would be one of mine. Also, I'd keep an imperial tape measure around, just in case.
I love my small Talmeter from Hultafors. I've glued a wide but thin magnet to one side so that I can slap it on a nearby metal surface.
small vac review is much appreciated !
I remember receiving an email about a silent vacuum from rutlands when it was released a while ago. Since then, they don't sell it as a silent one, so I was a bit skeptical. I'm glad you got it to test it 🙂 happy holidays 🎄
Yeah I don't know why tool manufacturers keep calling things "silent" when clearly they are not, hopefully someone has made a rule that they should use the word "quiet" !!
Happy holidays!
All the best Keith. Catch you in New Year 👍
Stanley PowerLock 3m metric is my favorite tape measure for the shop
Had the Rutlands vac quite a while now, really like it. I thought it got a bit louder a while ago and the filter appeared to be clean so I thought it was on it's way out. Turns out it had REALLY fine white dust in the large filter bit - if I had to guess I think it was from white two-part wood filler that was a bit stickier than regular wood dust?
I use the same dust hood over my lathe. I too removed the mesh bars, as it reduced air flow quite considerably. I have tapes dotted all around my workshop, at different workstations, plus a couple of extras. mostly metric, but a couple with imperial. I usually sweep my floor, but maybe it's time I got a dedicated vacuum. Less dust in the air. Merry Christmas to the family, if you don't put out a video before. 🎅
Happy Christmas
Merry Christmas, Keith to you and yours and a happy new year
Happy Christmas !
Its fun how there are SOOOOOOOO many tools out there that none of us will likely even know most of them exist. Good luck on your quest to find your perfect tape measure.
Great solution for the lathe! Happy Holidays for you and your family through the New Year!!!!
Happy holidays!
I didn’t know you could get metric only - I literally just ordered one 🙏 Jako 🙏
Great video Thanks for sharing. Happy Holidays to you and your family
Happy holidays!
After a few years of seemingly not having much luck with Stanley tape measures I switched to Ox Trade branded ones as cheap alternative and have stuck with them ever since. They're cheap enough that you can buy several for not much money (Amazon regularly do a pack of two 5m for around £5), they're class 2, you can get metric only as well as metric & imperial, they have two lock buttons plus a sliding lock and they look & feel decent enough to think they wont fall apart too easily. Would recommend them to anyone who's on a strict budget for tools.
9:24 - That's more about how well it seals than the suction. A regular domestic hoover can "lift" a human (or even a car) if the area of contact and seals are good enough (you can find several videos of that right here on RUclips, ex., from BBC Earth Science and MythBusters). Most of the work is done by atmospheric pressure (contrary to what some people think, vacuum doesn't actually "suck" anything).
Cool.. I have that Lufkin in chrome.. it’s one of the best - thought that it was obsolete! That Penco looks great too. It may has some limitations, but it is very carry friendly.
I like the Festool branded one, not sure if they make it or not. It locks automatically and you push a button to release the tape to retract
I really like the auto lock but the tape is quite hard to read. Too much clutter.
Glad you like the lufkin, I think I mentioned it to you when I got one. I really like it 😊
It's a lovely thing especially for the price!! 👍
The best tape measure I have is a self locking tape measure. So when you want to reel it in you press the button. None of the random reeling itself in when your measuring something
Vice verse by advent is the tape for you Keith, all metric and marked both sides, I’ve used em for years, my latest is the advent black edition, love it 👍🏻
I agree - the Vice Versa is the best tape measure I own. Only possible drawback is that it's quite chunky (smallest is 5m) to go in a trouser pocket.
@ it is yes, I just have 4/5 round the workshop to solve that, the new black edition is smaller and really well made but it is metric and imperial, not much of a problem for us old fellas who learnt both 😂
I showed it in the video.... Too big for me
@ yeah not really pocket material is it…
Merry Christmas 🙂
Happy holidays!
No idea if you can get it in metric-only but I am a strong believer in the Stanley Leverlock tape. There are other autlolocking tapes out there, but I really like how the lock release is on the bottom of the tape, as it naturally fits into the palm of my hand.
I use the advent vice versa tape measure, has metric on both sides
Showed in the video 👍
Happy holidays and a super New year to you all too mate 🍻
Happy holidays!
The football really got me 😂
Always enjoy your content...also your modeling skills are top notch😊
😂
5:55 that really tickled me haha. Thanks for the video Keith 👍🏻
P.s. I received the rutlands mitre gauge for my birthday, it is a thing of beauty
Merry Christmas, mate , n a Happy New Year to you n your family.
Happy holidays!
Awesome stuff, Keith! 😊
Merry Christmas and happy new year!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks buddy, you too!
The Facom 2M measure is very nice too.
Oooh that looks like it ticks almost all the boxes!!! Thanks, may pick one of them up
Happy Christmas & New year Keith, thanks for another year of interesting videos. Enjoy your break. Oh and tape measures, as long as they have feet & inches on them I have no preference. Well I am old school 🙂 Take care.
Happy Christmas!
FACOM 800A.216PB
Stainless. Small. Metric only. Both sides
Looks great... Expensive at the moment though
Hultafors Talmeter, nothing else comes close for functionality. And it looks like I am in good company. And for anything bigger, Stanley Fatmax.
Happy Christmas to you 😊
Happy holidays!
Happy Christmas!
Happy holidays!
Merry Christmas Keith
Happy Christmas
Stanley made a really nice 175year anniversary tape measure. The only thing it’s missing is a lock. And I think it was limited edition. You’d probably be able to find one online though
I love Penco stuff!
Happy Christmas Keith - I too have been on the hunt for the perfect tape measure. The closest I’m come are metric Milwaukee tapes, but after about 4-6 months I always seem to tear the tape. The 2m tiny Stanley tapes are good too
I use Ox tape measures , I prefer them to have both , I only ever use it to measure the height of the room and use it in feet and inches just as it’s easier to make a pencil mark on my pasting table half the length of the measurement then I take the roll back to the start of the table and back up to the mark hey presto I have the length I need then measure everything off the length of the first cut of wall paper
I like the 'strive for the best, but based on criteria' test and I've never had a decent tape measure so it's interesting to see your likes and those in the comments. Most generic ones are awful, so I do hope you follow up with this.
At least in the US, Lufkin is owned by Crescent, and they have a lifetime warranty - free replacement if even if you don't have the receipt. After my son got his OLD one replaced for free when the end came loose, I don't bother buying any other brand anymore.
Great!
Have you ever tried the BMI tape measure ?
Are you calling him fat?
If it wasn't for the fact that you needed it in metric and want it to have dimensions on both sides, I could've had something for you (if I could find it again in my boxes of stuff). It was a tape measurer my mom bought like 20-25 years ago, about 5x5x2cm in size, had a lock, metal body, the blade was kinda stiff for its size, about 2M of length), class 2, and it had a decent design to it (not as squary as the ones you showed, but not as rounded as the plastic ones either, kinda a mix of both worlds)
hultafors talmeter 2m
When it comes to tape measures there is never a one size fits all solution, I've been looking for one for the last 40 years, and am still constantly looking.
What I use is
For general measurements - Stanley FATMAX 8M
For accurate marking up - BMI 2M
and for accurate internal measurements - Gatortape
All are not cheap but will last for years.
Another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice job on the lathe hood keith may have to pinch that idea. For tape i like ox 5m one. It is both imperial and metric but double sided and proper robust case really solid whe extended and has a lock feature when you pull it have to push button to retract it usually in Toolstation for 2 pack for about 15 quid. Merry Christmas mate hope you have good one with the wife and baby brown 👍🏴
Cheers, happy Christmas
Check 3m viso bmi no 405 ruler, it's amazing for carpentry
Medid triple black 3m tape, think it ticks all your boxes. Plus the deal breaker for me is it's black and white which I find much easier to read.
The tape looks great but looks too big to be pocketable
The ability to turn down the suction is to minimise scoring the surface when sanding. Sanders don’t need as much suction and too much causes the machine to press down too hard resulting in the above
It's not a problem I've ever encountered
@@RagnBoneBrown probably not Keith, but it’s the reason given by festool
04:02 Tajima !
2:57 - So that thing in the middle isn't a button? I've had a similar one, which auto-locked and you pressed the button in the middle to unlock (retract) it. Also floppy, though.
No button sadly
Merry Christmas Keith, just watched the video, check the regs for positioning buildings particularly wooden ones next to oil tanks. I'm pretty sure there are min distances involved would hate for you to put a building in place then your oil supplier won't supply. Cheers, Mick.
My oil tank was right next to my shed and I didn't have any issues with it being filled but when the tank failed I couldn't put a new tank where the old one was - has to be 1.5m away 😮
Thank you, yes I am aware of this! 👍 Happy Christmas
Thanks, I believe it's actually 1.8m here 👍
@@RagnBoneBrown Great, as long as you’re aware. We couldn’t replace our oil tank when it failed because of these distance rules, ended up upgrading to a heat pump, but it’s not a decision to enter lightly. Happy Christmas to you too 🎄
1:32 - That isn't really guaranteed, though. If a tape is inaccurate, it's generally because the production equipment drifted, not because it was designed to be inaccurate to begin with. So, two "identical" tapes (same make, same model) can still be different.
Whenever I've checked them they've been spot on 👍 I doubt it would matter much for the kind of work I do anyway
@@RagnBoneBrown - Yes, but they'll usually be spot on with other models (and other brands) as well, especially if they're only 2 m long.
Hi Keith - my favourite tape measure by a long chalk is my 2m Stanley Fatmax. It's tiny. So tiny it has a key ring and small chain on it - the ring fits over your finger - handy for spinning like a gunslinger when you're thinking. It has everything you're after except a scale on the reverse... although not remotely retro/vintage either. Feels bomb proof and can be found for as little as £3.40 on Amazon.
Also my favourite, perfect for small jobs,
This 🏆
another thing... Keith, what is that giant green plastic thing in your garden -- shown at @5:55
Oil tank.
Unfortunately Keith be aware that it looks like it doesn't comply with current regulations as it needs to be 750mm from the boundary and 1.5m from any sheds or buildings. I know all this because our oil tank failed and I found couldn't replace it in the same position. Ended up getting a heat pump, but this is a long way off your original question.
Just be aware of this when it's time to replace it Keith
I really struggled to find a metric only tape a few years back. In the end I bought 2 in LeRoy-Merlin in Boulogne sur Mer. But everybody still looks at me as though I have horns growing out my head wanting a metric only measure.
My dad had a Lufkin tape like the one you showed. He passed in '94 and had it for years before that I wonder where it went? It was even that "beautiful" light avocado green colour you showed.
Don't forget to keep your proposed garden room a minimum of 1.8m from your heating oil tank.
I will do 👍
Advent Z02VV05. There's a video from Gosforth Handyman channel on it. Best tape measure I ever had.
I showed it in the video! Too big for me
@@RagnBoneBrown Yeah I saw after commenting! I would like a mini version of it too. Speaking of compact, I saw the Magnum super compact on the Shadowfoam channel and I'd really like to get one to try out, but Magnum doesn't answer my emails, they don't sell directly, and I haven't found an online shop that will ship the to Portugal... However, Shadowfoam now has an online tool shop where they sell them in the UK, so you can probably get your hands on one! They're really small.
@@RagnBoneBrown the Shadowfoam video is called "I Found The Most Amazing NEW Tools at Europe's BIGGEST Tool Fair!" and it's at the 12 minute mark. The Shadowfoam tools shop is called Top notch tools.
Hey Keith. Dude, I seriously appreciate your content. I'm still floored at how fast your finish times are for various projects.
But what I really want to ask... do you know if that Rutlands vac has an American version?
Thank you.
Neil
Thank you Neil. I'm not sure I'm afraid
Keith would the vac be compatible to use with DUST COMMANDER S30-30 liter steel kit
I'm not sure but I don't see why not
I've been looking at that vac for a while wating for it to go on offer. Are the bags a standard size and easy to get hold of?
Hey Keith. Great video as always. I think Rutland do a planer thicknesser don’t they? Looks quite affordable from memory and would be great a garage type workshop. How about grabbing one from them and letting us know what you think?
To be honest I don't do many tool reviews apart from table saws and sanders, for some reason! 👍
@ reckon it would be a good one to do if you did!
Mr Keith, would like to know your thoughts of using a jigsaw? I see you have one of the barrel types... I do not use a jigsaw very often but I would like the best style of tool for the job....
I much prefer the barrel grip, just feels more controlled to me
Thanks, Keith, as ever, really interesting. Nice to see the cats, but who is the handsome male model you used for the t-shirt?
😂
haha... great casual football talent definitely hidden there!
No doubt!
I find all tape measures have the numbers upside down! I'm right handed, and hold the tape measure in my left hand while marking with my right hand. Of course, it's probably me not knowing how to use a tape measure!! There's an idea, Ketih. If you haven't done one, how about a video on using a tape measure.
100% getting abuse for removing the imperial on the tape Keith 🤣
I’ve got a Stanley all metric tape that’s a bit bigger than you are after but it’s solid and accurate.
Merry Christmas and enjoy the break. Looking forward to 2025
Happy holidays!
Another great video and you should take up modelling, you'll be great at it 😂
😂
Lufkin Unilok 3m metric only for you I reckon
Try TAJIMA Sigma
Too good for pot noodles now Keith?
A sad day....... 😃😃😃
Never too good for a pot noodle! The Huel ones are a step up in quality though
These don't fit your criteria, but take a look at the GATORTAPE Class 1 Precision 5m Top Reading Tape Measure and the Huepar 2-in-1 Laser Tape Measure.
Metric only is really nice, imperial just takes up wasted space.
BMI 2m metric tape measure. Life changing!! I think I sent you a link in an old Workshop Banter Patreon message,
The numbers are on the ‘reverse’ or upside down which makes marking SO much easier!
I own one for last 4 years.
Beautiful and innovative design, but:
It is expensive, and biggest drawback is the missing hook.
Better option is BMI Viso 3m (I also own), but still expensive.
I found one no name with lock and least amount of bells and whistles the best option for woodworking.
@@AndreaArzensek I’ve seen the viso but not used it, thanks for the recommendation
I picked up the 2m for about 8quid which I didn’t think was unreasonable?
@harestonestudio I buy 4 tapes for 8£. But for BMI this is normal price. I think I paid mine €10 on fine-tools German site. It has some very clever features (like staying flat on surface and being extremely compact and light. But, the missing hook is the reason I rarely use it. Greetings from Croatia 😊
@@AndreaArzensek Hvala!
Thanks, yes I did check it out, the one thing holding me back from trying one is that I don't see it being very good for throwing in a pocket? I think I need one with a case 👍
My favourite was a self-locking tape measure. After 10 years it finally broke but the manufacturer had gone bust. Nothing else has come close since! So annoying!
dewalt
The football 😂
Glad someone noticed!
Don’t bother with the flash Festool tape measure. Weak spring, busy tape, lock not great. The tape is too floppy, even though it’s only a 2 metre tape. Looks nice though.
Anyone else tried tape measure racing? If you've done it I don't need to explain...LOL
Hi Keith, RUclips has made the auto-translate feature now the default. If you wouldn't mind, please disable it on your channel. The auto-translated title are usually very, very weird and really make me not click the video (this particular one isn't bad but still...) Thanks
