For looking up purposes, I feel like you should title them sorta like old Friends episodes. X vs Y - The one with the uphill throw or whatever. But that'd spoil the game, of course.
I usually like the Protoss roaming tactics. But if he'd realized he had an up to 44-point army supply advantage at 13:03 after storming the mutas, he could've outright overrun herO, or at least destroyed his third. So roaming there felt like a missed opportunity to close out the game.
I came here to post this so thanks for pointing this out! This was a confidence fail on his part. He needed to realize that if you kill a whole group of mutas completely for free you really can't ask for a better attack timing in the game! Zergs generally don't sit around with tons of excess resources and decide to make a bunch of mutas for the fun of it. They stockpile resources while the spire is building and then dump it all into mutas when it finishes. Wiping out the muta ball is a HUGE setback and you don't need full vision of the map to know that, you just need to know the timing!
Probably, but Hero was positioning for a counter attack(which the roaming stopped). So if Zerg lost their third, Protoss probably also loses their third so zerg is still up one base. And the third base was the zerg's strongest point of defense. But also a supply block would be really bad for zerg in that spot. It's not so cut and dry.
Honestly that's one thing i love about watching these games, you see a thumbnail like this one's where it looks like a game winning play, but the game keeps going and they potentially even lose
Ok but counterpoint, why rush in and close out the game, you can’t get up that 3rd base ramp with lurker egg and don’t know the status of Zerg defenses. Protoss wants to deathball and get information certainty, then ride an advantage with perfect game state knowledge. He even got a pack of hydras “for free” by roaming, as artosis is pointing out the divide and conquer reason for roaming. Like if you play Protoss, you know that the “killer instinct” dive just doesn’t pan out like you want it to sometimes, and you learn to never make that call unless you need a dice roll win. You can always lategame win, which becomes the default choice with an advantage. Inevitability > opportunity. Thoughts? What am I missing?
@@oncedidactic By third I meant herO's mineral-only base; his fourth was indeed pretty untouchable due to the ramps. With perfect information, we know P needs to attack because Z is up by 19 (!) workers. The P player obviously doesn't have perfect information, but he does know that he just destroyed a ton of supply for free, so he should make a move now and see how much he can get done with it. Also, is the Z really going to have a full group of mutas *and* tons of lurkers ready for defense? Probably not, right? Plus by pressuring the Z, you prevent them from droning up like crazy. Furthermore, the P might know that his Z opponent is herO. If you know your opponent is better than you, then you must not play for the lategame, but rather exploit temporary weaknesses when they appear.
@@Merknilash Same! I could play decently when I was like 16, now I am too damn slow :) Oh, I probably could be very good if we'd played at Medium speed or something :D
Lmao same bro. I understand and will even make the same conclusions Artosis makes before he even brings it up. But my APM is like 70 at most and I suck so bad at macroing things. I also use my keyboard to control the screen because the mouse flicking annoys me. I'd be a much better player if I could move the camera with WASD so my left hand was closer to the macro keys... instead I gotta jump my arm across the keyboard, which, somehow is preferable to flicking my mouse wildly.
Merry christmas arty and thanks for the almost daily entertainment for years now. Have been staying in touch and updated with brood war all this time thanks to you and the game would not be the same at all without these uploads!
I like how the toss was roaming with the main goon army in one area and the zealots in another. Gave him the ability to pin a portion of the zerg army in one area and threaten with the main army in another, then pull one or the other back and or consolidate his entire force if needed. With the zergs vision i think it also may have confused the main armies movements.
13:03 I think a pack of goons turning into blue puddle of goo while trying to go through the minefield without the observer and being under shelling from sieged tanks is close to that level of satisfaction.
In fairness to the bad attack, Protoss was about to be caught with a dragoon army against defilers and cracklings. That's trouble even if you haven't just shoved your face into sunkens uphill.
I think this perfectly illustrates the undeniable requirement of maintaining 1-2 DAs at all times PvZ. How many games have been cast watching the P slowly get whittled down by mutas to get choked out by the inevitable hydra/lurker push? 1 mail + storm and 1100/1100 of zergs most dangerous unit wiped out in under 5seconds. Dark swarm and plague absolutely smash protoss bases, but I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a feedback end a defiler in the last 25yrs... Protoss gotta stop relying on gateway mans and roaming for mistakes from the zerg. Mail allows P to stomp the Z at critical moments and turn the tide. Which ever protoss figures this skill put first will go on a zerg neck snapping spree. Someone tell Bisu he forgot a unit
I think most Protoss are just too focused on fielding mass high Templar that they see less utility in Dark Archons. You need two Dt to make one, and that can either roam with your army, or you need one Dark Archon per base, which means fielding two Dt and then you still need the High Templar to capitalize with the storms. It’s a great strategy, but its a lot like fielding Ultras and Defilers as far as the tech and commitment requirements to make it work, which means you need a great economy and a long enough game to tech out both High Templar and Dark archons, and also to make enough to make it worth it. Mass gateway gives the time you need to get to that point, so I get why they can get stuck at that step.
Honestly, it doesn't look like Protoss ever actually committed to that attack. It looks like he was only trying to pick off what he could and started pulling back, but he just got caught by that brilliant flank to the right.
One of the many things I love about Star craft is how most of the units maintain some sort of relevancy throughout the match. Zerglings are one of the best examples of just being good at almost any point. Especially with their cost effectiveness and upgrades. Personally, I prefer weapons upgrades. I can't play Protoss worth a damn but I find with Zerg their units are so weak they die anyways. So might as well get a few good shots off before the psi storm comes crashing down on their cheap little 35 hp lol
Didn't play Brood War for an age, so a few questions - did shield battery get removed from the game? Also - do queens ever get used by pro players? Watched a few of your casts where Zerg won, so hopefully you cast one where Protoss wins! :)
@@IslandUsurper broodling is just too slow, and high templar is easy to replace, the tempo loss is not worth the value over time especially since protoss has a mobile army as for shieldbatteries they are very situational and not used 99% of the time
I can't remember the last time I've seen Protoss win a PvZ. Didn't happen this time either. Artosis mentioning that the 3 best units are all Zerg units. is Zerg just the strongest faction? I also see them winning TvZ most of the time afaik.
apart from Soulkey, I feel many Z players, esp. those on Arty's channel, are wayyy too confident with their unit compositions, which have the same fate always: frequently get massacred by the storms and reavers LOL
Arty, i hope you stream on christmas eve so i can stay sane at the in-laws. there all types of "woke" so i can say, "oh jeez guyz i'm overstimulated" and they'll never question me when i go to a different room and watch your stream. in reality, they're just kinda boring.
The more I see Maelstrom the more I do honestly feel like there's a larger late game role for Darkons than simply making one for killing Mutas. A group of 3-4 for more Maelstroms could enhance the effectiveness of Storm by enough that it's more than worth it.
It's expensive, tasks the micro, the tech is time and resource-consuming, vulnerable and the DA (Dark Archons if you didn't understand the abbreviation) just clunks the movement of your army. But you're right, it's a great combo to see. And if you have any DTs (Dark Templars if you didn't understand the abbreviation) is a better option than just lol'ing them to OL (Overlords if you didn't understand the abbreviation)

@avinotion the original one

It seems Protoss throwing games with overly optimistic attacks isn't just a PvT thing.

Woke: Random noises

I see speed shuttle + Dark Arcon and Pystorm for the overlord ball in our future
