Interview with Genesis P-Orridge discussing William Burroughs - 1981

  • Twenty odd minutes of Genesis P-Orridge (who in 1981 was still a member of Throbbing Gristle) discussing the history of his relationship with William Burroughs as well as discussing the 'Nothing Here But The Recordings' album released Industrial Records.
There are some snippets of the recording plus Burroughs explaining a little about Hasan-i Sabbah, the 'Old Man of the Hills', drinker and sharer of hashish, founder and leader of 'Ashishin', the 'Holy Killers of Islam'.
I do not know any more about this recording that has laid dormant on an old cassette tape that I just unearthed.
I do not know who the interviewer was who was speaking to Genesis P-Orridge, or the reason for the interview, and whether the interview might have ended up in print, visual or audio media.
Perhaps someone will step up and fill those gaps.
The visuals which accompany this post are just scanned from the book, Re-Search 4/5 which was first published in 1982.
Included within the pages are William Burroughs, Brion Gysin and Throbbing Gristle discussing advanced ideas involving the social control process, creativity and the future.
Also within the book are interviews, scarce fiction and essays.
This book is a manual of prophetic ideas and insights.
If you see a copy you should grab it double quick.

I have that copy of RE. Those books were so important to me growing up in a pre-internet time. It's comforting when you realise that other people share the same interests. I first discovered William Burroughs through the Beatles as he's on the cover of 'Sgt Peppers' and I'm fortunate enough to have a dad who is an old hippy who was into the 'Beat Generation' :-)

Good find! I listened to this a while back, but I never read the description before. Where did you find the tape?
Re/Search books are awesome. I've only had the opportunity to read the one on Modern Primitives, which also has a great interview with GPO and was a big influence on my psychic development. It was at a library in a town where I used to live. It also had interviews with Fakir Musafar, Manwoman, and some other very insightful freaks. I just found the Re/Search Industrial Culture Handbook here: archive.org/details/ReSearchIndustrialCultureHandbook

I liked Gen, and always have done since “Godstar”. I know that his/her reputation has suffered. But Gen did have an impact on British “counter culture” and in my opinion ended up getting chased out of Britain. The story about Sleazy’s parents hanging out with the Queen of England and the Queen asking “So, what is Peter doing doing these days?”. When she was told about Gen, she knew who he/she was! And the Queen did not approve of Gen’s “antics”. The Security Services in Britain were definitely watching Gen, and he/she made it easy for them in my view. Gen wanted change and the establishment doesn’t like that.
    Fascinating character.

Genesis uses they/them pronouns, so you should probably edit your summary there.

    • @acidtester7470
      @acidtester7470 4 года назад +12

Oh go fuck your self. If Genesis P-Oridge uses they/them pronouns thats up to him. He didn't upload this so you should probably never mind about the language the uploader uses.
If you want to use they/them pronouns you are free to use them to your hearts content. Others choose to use him/her, he/she.
Language is a powerful element that plays a large part in the way people think. Use it to make the changes you think need to be made. To try and control the way language is used is to try and control people. Such an act is just as tyranical as the tyrany couched in the current linguistic paradigm.

@@acidtester7470 Genesis would have hated you. Have some respect for the dead, and refer to this legend by their preferred nomenclature. Your entire argument is discredited by the fact that using a persons preferred name and pronouns literally costs you nothing and merely comes down to not being an asshole for no reason. Otherwise, can I just decide your name is "useless bigot" from here on out? For someone with such a postmodern, "words can mean anything" viewpoint, you certainly seem set in the gender binary. Genesis generally went by "S/he" because they and Lady Jay were embarking on a project to become one singular, androgynous being. That's fucking awesome, and people like that make the world a more interesting place. Why not just let people live their damn lives? Who hurt you?

@@mercuryrising9174 yeah, he wrote about it in the psychick bible. I honestly only started listening to throbbing gristle last week. Going to look into finding some PTV very soon as well.
